To my knowledge Sony Content Manager is the only way you can transfer information, unless you have PS+ you can just upload your save files and download on your new card.

 
Switch cards isn't much fun. When I upgraded to a 32 GB what I found was each time you switched to one or the other, there was a lengthy "updating database" process you had to sit through. That's going to get old. The idea of putting a Japanese account on it is interesting, though. Probably better than selling it for next to nothing.
