blea. I was going to update the drivers on my mothers desktop for her. I havent messed with AMD drivers in a while but it looked like you had to do the old fashioned way of uninstalling the old ones before putting in the new ones... like an idiot, instead of just doing it manually like id done tons of times in the past with older systems i noticed a 'clean uninstall utility' on the driver page. Figured id give that a shot.

Bad idea. Mouse and keyboard stoped working as soon as the damn program finished. Now im kinda boned. Im guessing it for some stupid reason uninstalled the USB drivers or something? I have no idea why it would do something so stupid but its the only reason i could think they would stop working like that. I couldn't even reboot i had to manually hit the power button

So anyone have any clue how the hell i can get them working again and see what damage was done? Not sure how to reinstall the usb drivers without a working keyboard or mouse

Try unplugging them and plugging them back in, windows should detect them and reinstall the drivers. If that doesn't work try a different mouse and keyboard and try to do a system restore.

yea tried plugging and unplugging in like all 7 usb slots. No dice. Its not the mouse or keyboard they work on other systems. Im not even sure how i would do a system restore if i cant.. you know, use the mouse and keyboard.

tried 3 mice and 2 keyboards. doesn't work.

worth noting that it seems like they work in the bios but stop working when it gets to windows. I dont understand how a friggin AMD driver uninstall utility FROM AMD could fuck up usb ports and possibly more on my system o_O

Were they all usb? Does the computer have a PS/2 port that you could try an old mouse with? That should work if you have one.

You might also be able to repair it from the windows install disc if you have it.

All of them are usb. Motherboard is an asrock z87extreme 6. I"ll have to dig through some of my old parts tomorow morning to see if i have an old ps2 mouse or something i can try. Id rather not do an actual system repair if i could avoid it. A simple restore point, or reinstall of usb drivers would be ideal but i need to get a working mouse to do that dont i? Dont think you can do system restore from boot or anything

this is kinda nuts not sure why it did this with a graphic driver uninstall program direct from AMD. Im wondering if theres anything else it may have stripped out other than usb drivers

I think a PS/2 mouse would do it. If you didn't want to repair with the windows disc another option might be to pull the hard drive and put it in a usb enclosure. Then you could check it on another computer to see if there was a log file that the uninstall utility left behind and you could see which files it deleted and copy those files back manually if you have a computer with the same OS. It shouldn't be too hard to compare what you have on the working computer to what is missing on the other one.

didn't see an old ps2 mouse. Oldest one i had unfortunately was still a USB

I am curiuos if there was a log file though. If i do get in at some point, do you have any idea where i could look? Problem was i believe it was a regular executable not something that got installed. So unless it put a txt file on the desktop or something i doubt it created one =( Pulling HD's and stuff sounds like a hassle. Theres gotta be a way to get to restore point or get the mouse working long enough to try to figure out whats going on. Seems really weird it would do this with a simple AMD uninstall utilitiy

success! did a system repair cuz i got so frustrated i turned it off while windows was starting up and it gave me the option. This let me get into the system and i promply did a restore point to about a week back. Seems to be working ok for now. Still though im a bit concerned. If i did a system restore to a week back i should be fine right? Is there anything i should/could check on to see if anything else is screwed up?

Also for the graphic driver update. Im going to just do it manually this time like i used to in the past =P Just wondering if its better to uninstall the old ones through the add/remove program utility in windows, or just uninstall it through device manager. Is one preferable to the other?

It should be fine now. Anything it might have screwed up would have been fixed by the restore point.

As for the graphics drivers, I always just update to the new ones and not uninstall the old ones. There is really no point to uninstalling the old ones since the new installer will overwrite the old files. I had a problem with CCC not loading after I did an uninstall once so now I just install the new over the old.

hun, really? Back in the day it was always recomended you uninstall the old ones. Since ive been having issues it may not be a bad idea. Is the device manager route or the add/remove program usually the best bet? Think ill do a full removal this once just to be safe. Tnx for the help
