I just received a check from my university for hope scholarship for $1k+. I went to Walmart to cash it and it was denied by Certegy for "reason 2". I was told to call the number to figure out why. End up going to Kroger to try and get it cashed there. Kroger denied me for the same reason though I've cashed checks there before.

Anyways, I called the number and the lady gave me the general "our analysis prevented us from accepting it". I asked what specifically cause it to be rejected and she repeated the same paragraph I can tell she was reading.

I tried to scan the check with PayPal but found that PayPal can't cash a check out $1k.

I have a bank but it's only in Texas. I don't live in Texas anymore though. Going to go to BB&T (the bank that issued the check) tomorrow and try to get it cashed there. If that doesn't work might go to a small check cashing place.

Anyways, wondering what other alternatives I have for cashing the check in?

If you are near Ohio, go to a check cashing place. Many pawn shops will also cash checks.

Both charge a fee, but they can probably answer questions about any issues if they can't cash it.

When I worked retail, we had a lady whose check was always declined, come to find out someone with her name had a history of fraud so that's why they would never accept it. What was stupid is the lady who did fraud was all the way in another state. Maybe something similar is why? (Not saying you did fraud, just trying to think of check decline reasons)

Went to the bank the check was issued. The bank had an issue at first but they said that it stopped it b/c the first check was voided. The lady simply clicked one button and override it. Got my money within 5 minutes (no fee) and very little hassle to get an account with them.

I do need a new nationwide bank so going to look into sign up bonuses / benefits for one.

Thanks for the help guys.

glad you got it sorted. It's definitely worth chasing a bonus if you're opening an account anyway.
