Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Returns (PS3/360) $19.97

You couldn't pay me enough to play this Lightning Fantasy XIII garbage. Lightning Returns Final Fantasy XIII for a full refund.

I want classic Final Fantasy back with turn based combat / world map / airships, etc. I want the core of the series to come back, and not whatever garbage this is.

Amen. This is a platform I can get behind.

Forget that. I didn't like "god. Savior. God. God. Savior. Savior. Savior. God. Savior. God. God. God. Why is Hope a kid again? God."

I rage quit it and I sold it.

I haven't played lightning returns but the other too games I liked actually. You have to approach it knowing its not the same old turn based games and its meant to be something new. I think its almost an arcade version of an RPG which can be very interesting. I love turned based combat but having a fast action arcade style has been a fun change but not a replacement.

Have you played Bravely Default?

Before I click this thread, I was praying this was for Best Buy. I'd bite at $16, it should be matter of time until this goes on sale at BB for $20. :( From what I heard though, this game didn't sale very well.

Ouch, it really did sell poorly (only 970,000 globally with 280,000 units sold in the U.S.). Not much compared to the 7.18 million sold by the original and the 3.24 million sold of FFXIII-2. Edit: Originally forgot to include the units sold for X360 for Lightning Returns (global and domestic), but now they're included.

That's worse than I thought. I guess people weren't as hyped for the return of Lightning as they thought.

Everyone is waiting for it to go below $20 :)

Then why is it called "Final Fantasy"?

Don't count on this being the end of Lightning. The next Final Fantasy will be Final Fantasy XIII-4: Lightning Never Leaves.

how much those "sequels" tarnished the FF brand.
The Final Fantasy brand's nowhere near what it used to be. It's sad to see how far they've fallen, but it's good in the sense that it also gave people like Atlus free reign to release games people actually want to play.

Lightning and every iteration of 13 can seriously fuck off forever.

So much judgment in this thread from people who obviously have not touched the game.  The combat really is not that bad.  Although I would not put this anywhere near the top of FF games, there is not a lot of good JRPGs out there in recent years, and it is a cut above most of them.

I just don't want a time limit. I wished immense failure on this game for the time limit to dissuade others from doing the same thing ever again. I can barely tolerate it in Dead Rising 3.

Agreed... And we may get what we want. "Bravely Default" outsold Lightning Returns by a long margin.

Source? That'd be pretty surprising given the name brand recognition - I thought that in the first month they'd sold more or less the same. Not saying you're wrong as I haven't paid that much attention, strictly curious.

The only thing I could find is this stating FFXIIILR's 'opening numbers' were ~225k and this stating that BD sold 200k in the first three weeks.

You act like there's not a way to freeze the game clock.

It's not sales numbers, but it is an interview the president of SE had a couple of weeks ago in regards to the company taking a new direction thanks to BD's success.

VGChartz (not the most reliable source, I know) claims that Lightning Returns has a combined global sales of 970k, as of the end of March 2014, and Bravely Default has 810k. Note that these numbers only include copies sold at retail, since no one really tracks digital sales due to Nintendo, MS, and Sony not releasing those numbers.

Back on topic, I may bite on this. The demo was okay and I played the other two games, I waited for the $20 drop before getting XIII-2 and felt it was an okay purchase. I may have to jump on this when I get paid later in the week, if its still available.

What is Tales of Xillia/2?

What is Persona?

What is Shin Megami Tensei?

What is Bravely Default?

I have to take this back. My source was a fellow game developer who posted this was the case in his Twitter feed last week. He's very reliable and works close to SE, so maybe he knows something that isn't in the reports that have been released publicly? I'll ask what he was looking at, but I agree with you. From what I see in total international sales figures, it was fairly even between the two. Still - that's a HUGE accomplishment for a handheld JRPG.

Nionel links a good article above.

Wait... Nebraska Furniture Mart?!  Did they misread it as "Lighting Returns" when ordering stock and thought it was a fancy new lamp?!?  LOL

I wonder how much square saved by rehashing the FF13 3 times, versus how much those "sequels" tarnished the FF brand.
SE is going to spend millions to rebuild the entire trilogy from the ground up and relaunch it as a clone of various other games. They already did it for Final Fantasy 14.

FF-13 bashing is the easy and trendy thing to do lately.  People don't understand that games evolve.  The new stuff will never live up to your misplaced nostalgia for the games of yore.  Sure, I loved FF-VII and VI; I've been playing FF since the first one (even the original GB Legends and Adventures) and I've enjoyed every single one.  But that's because I understand that you can't keep making the same game over and over again.  I applaud SE's decision to break the mold and experiment.  Do they hit the mark every time?  No, but each game introduces mechanics that are refreshing and stories I really get into.  Final Fantasy games, by design, change every iteration.  At first, it was universe/characters.  Now, it's game play.  Change is their MO.
