GameStop shares fall as 2014 forecast disappoints

Video game retailer GameStop Corp on Thursday forecast full-year earnings below market expectations as it is yet to see an uptick in sagging video game software sales, despite robust hardware sales driven by the launches of Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4 consoles.
 
GameStop shares fell as much as 9.3 percent, making the stock one of the top percentage losers on the New York Stock Exchange, before paring losses to close down 4.0 pct at $37.33.
 
The Grapevine, Texas-based company, which reported a weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter profit, had said in January that sales of games for older versions of Xbox and PlayStation consoles were weak.
 
"Investors came into this quarter with high expectations of how new-generation consoles would drive sales of hardware and software," Morningstar analyst Liang Feng, said.
 
"New software sales over the past few years have been turning downward. ... You're seeing some investors get jittery that maybe it's a structural trend that will continue."
 
In addition to uncertainty around sales of new games, GameStop's used-game business, historically its most profitable, will face new competition from retail giant Wal-Mart, which said last week it would allow U.S. shoppers to trade in used games for anything from groceries to gadgets. The used-game business involves refurbishing old games and selling them at a reduced rate.
 
GameStop forecast full-year earnings of $3.40-$3.70 per share and revenue growth of 8-14 percent or about $9.76 billion-$10.30 billion. Analysts are expecting earnings of $3.76 per share on revenue of $9.85 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
 
"We've got through a very tough transitional quarter," Chief Executive Officer Paul Raines said in an interview. "But we're very bullish on the (new)consoles."
 
GameStop's forecast reflects its expectations for strong sales of new video game hardware and a gradually improving software market making 2014 "another transition year", R.W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian said in a note.
 
GameStop executives told investors in a conference call that a drop in software sales for older consoles had impacted its fourth-quarter results.
 
The company's net profit fell to $220.5 million, or $1.89 per share, in the fiscal fourth quarter ended Feb. 1, from $261.1 million, or $2.15 per share, a year earlier.
 
Revenue rose to $3.68 billion from $3.56 billion, helped mainly by demand for the new game consoles from Sony and Microsoft.
 
Excluding one-time items, GameStop earned $1.90 per share, missing the average analyst estimate of $1.92, on revenue of $3.79 billion.
 
GameStop shares, which traded at $25.30 a year ago, hit a 52-week high of $57.74 in mid-November when Sony and Microsoft released their new consoles.
 
The company said on Thursday that it has shut its Spawn Labs unit, which it acquired in 2011 to develop online game-streaming technology.
 
Raines said GameStop saw a low demand from gamers and decided to focus on its partnerships with companies like Sony that have their own services that stream games from cloud servers.

GameStop's sales largely depend on consoles made by Sony Corp, Microsoft Corp and Nintendo Co Ltd , which increasingly must compete with games available on tablets and smartphones.
 
Console gamers are also buying more games online through digital platforms on PCs and mobile devices.
 
GameStop has diversified its revenue stream in recent years by selling used games and hardware to console owners and expanding its digital and mobile offerings,including sale of iOS and Android devices in some stores.
 
Some analysts have said that GameStop would continue to be a dominant player despite the threat of increased competition.
 
"We're more watchful for how much of the old console market has moved onto the mobile and PC gaming platform and what's the trend in the console market itself as Xbox and PlayStation strengthen their digital market over time," Feng said. I think the closing of 120 stores could be a good move if they close locations that are too close together.  I know of at least 3 malls in Tampa/Orlando that have 3 gamestops within 1mi of eachother if not within the same mall.

 
They have closed 3 gamestops near me in the past year and a half. I only have one gamestop left, which is why I'm worried. :(

They are closing 120 stores but are also opening up 300 to 400 new stores. My guess is the new stores have to do with the new 'All Digital' thing they hope of going for. And the new focus on Phones and Tablets.

Oh, I hate digital and wouldn't go to gamestop for a phone or tablet so hopefully they leave my one lone store alone
 
I've been jaded by GameStop's used games.  Sometimes the cases and discs have stains on them of an unknown origin - just nasty.  Absolutely no care for the quality of their used products at stores in my area.  Either Best Buy or GameFly are my preferred choices for used games.

Haven't had any problems with their new products except for one incident: I bought a Grand Theft Auto V Collectors Edition only to find out that the square seal had been cut and replaced with a circle seal.  When I tried to return it they thought that I did it.  I told them to check their cameras.  They eventually game me a replacement.

 
GameStop's quality for used games has been going down for a long time now-- they seem more concerned about profit margins then they do ensuring their used games are of good quality. Most games I've gotten from them are the same as you posted-- although it depends greatly on the store's policy-- every store is different & from what I understand the corporate HQ has no cares about policing used game quality. It's not shocking to me that their profits are tanking.

 
When is someone going to mention gutting games? The GS here actually gutted a limited edition, pre-order game that was never even put out on the floor... LOL. I guess bad habits are hard to break.

 
Does this mean more Buy 2 Get 1 Free sales and other sales?  Figure selling at a somewhat loss is better than not making any sale.

In my town there are 3 gamestop within 2 miles. We used to have 4 but one was next to a mom and pop gamestore and soon as they went out of business gamestop closed the store right next to them. Up by my girlfriends house I can stand at one gamestop and actually see another one.

I dont shop there anymore really. Occasionally when something has a great clearance price like a CE ill go in but they all pretty much have the same things. They are just too expensive, I dont like their staff, used prices are too high and usually in bad shape, I dont like getting assaulted about trade ins and pre orders, and I dont like their policies.

I have saved a lot of hassle and money by not shopping with them. They arent going under but I can see why they would gradually lose business. Kids and parents buying for their kids are their primary customers now because neither know any better.

there were a couple of glitches with the online deals, the Buy3get2 free was going on the whole week, and they honored the online deal actually

 
Gamestop is just one of those stores I don't think will be around forever. Hopefully we will never have full digital take over but if we do it will kill Gamestop. I wouldn't care since there is not a single thing they sell that I can't get somewhere else cheaper and have only ever went there for their exclusives which is rare as it is. Even their deals suck and since they more or less have become a place that specializes in used game sales it's just not a store worth visiting.

 
Gamestop is terrible. I want them shutdown just for their insane practice of gutting new games. Once you break the seal and bounce the disc around a drawer for a year, it's not new anymore. I had one try to sell me a scuffed to hell Xbox 360 disc that was "new" in the wrong game case!! Selling the sequel in the case to the original. "Oh, somebody sold the other game in the wrong case." If they'd stop opening the goddamn things, that wouldn't happen. If they're too cheap to invest in better security, they could just put laminated game covers on the wall like Toys R Us did when I was a kid. They had a sleeve of tickets hanging from them with the exact number of tickets for how many copies they had in stock. Nice and simple. Amazingly, TRU always had someone in the security booth to hand out the games too. Nowadays, you always have to track people down when something is locked up at various stores cause only two people in the whole store have a goddamn key.

As with every store, I go to Gamestop if I do my research and they are the best option for me. It's a combination of price, convenience and availability. I wouldn't say I shop exclusively at any one store.

I have no stake in their stock prices or how many stores they have. Whatever happens is okay in my book. I don't think they are great or bad right now.
