Headphones for gaming PS4

baeelin

CAGiversary!
I was thinking about ordering some more serious headphones for gaming, rather than continue using my iphone earbuds.  I really like the new audio out feature with the DS4.  I was hoping to get some monetarily sensible suggestions from the community as to a good pair of headphones that won't affect my kid's college fund.  I am a bit of an audiophile, my home entertainment system is a Klipsch, for measure.  I am looking at the following ones, ideas?

Just get the Official Playstation Wireless Gold Headset?
This. So much this.

You can save some money and get them through AWD, they pop up quite often for around 70, retail for 100. Ive had mine for a while and they are great and work seamlessly with the Quad and the Triple.

Cant recommend them enough. They are my first pair ever though so nothing to compare to, but I like em.

The Sony Gold set is great. Great sound for my tastes. And actually I don't like the bass boost mode I created using the app. Too much bass lol. Chatting on them is nice too.

Those sennheiser are a great deal for music. But the fact that they are wired(annoying) figure additional costs for a quality extension cable also there is no surround option(really annoying). I loved playing infamous using sony gold. Sounded like I was in a city..... Getting concrete thrown at me.... lol

I have the first gen Ps3 ones and they work just fine on the PS4.  Amazon Warehouse has them for $60.

They crack sometimes, but it may be Wifi interference in my house

The reason I didn't auto opt to a set of headphones with a gaming logo on the side is there is usually a lot of hype and very little quality out of them.  The fact that you guys are adamant that they are so good makes me feel a lot better about that.  At least the great thing is I can check them out and if I don't like them just send them back.

I love my ps gold set. I use them all day. Now plugged into this tab. Does anyone know a way to amplify the wireless signal? 20 more feet and I could wear them everywhere in my house.

Quick question about the Gold headset--it it really only for doing both game audio and chat through the headphones? I have a decent surround set up, and mostly want to just use that and just want something better than the crappy ear piece it came with for game chat.

I lean toward just finding a better wired headset to plug into the controller (something like the one that came with the 360) since I don't do all that much online gaming--but the few I find have bad reviews. At least the PS4 branded ones. But I guess since it's a 3.5mm jack I could look for a 360 one or something.

Not sure what you mean by "it really only for doing both game audio and chat through the headphones?", but both the game audio and the chat goes thru the headphones.  Btw, I bought it for the same reason as you, I wanted something better than the crappy earbud that came with my PS4.  So far, i'm loving the headset bc the games sounded good (I'm no audiophile) and I've tested the mic in MP games and everyone said I sounded clear.

I mean is it only good for that because I DON'T want that.

I want a headset for ONLY the game chat. I want to use my surround set up for the game audio--so I want something that ONLY does chat through the headset and lets the game audio go to my speakers. So I lean toward just getting a plug in headset like the 360 one that only covers one ear.

I mean I'd use the game audio through the headphones occasionally (when the fiance is trying to work in the next room)--but I already have wireless headphones for that purpose and can just stick to single player games when that's the case.

I ended up biting the bullet and getting the Gold headset. It is pretty damn nice. To my earlier question, there is the option to just send it the chat audio and keep the game audio coming from your stereo. The cups muffle the sound a tad doing that, but just requires turning the volume up a bit louder than normal.

The Virtual Surround is pretty good, but I still prefer to use my speakers unless it's late or the fiancé is trying to work. The VSS is much better than just using the Sony Wireless stereo head set I used previously that I just plug the base into the headphone jack on my receiver. The Gold headset picks up a lot less interference than that wireless set does too, which is nice.

I have bought two $85 pair of headphones from Sony. Both are not for gaming, but for me to buy a $85 pair of headphones and buy another for work is a testament for their quality. I am sure these ones are just as good. Sure the price is expensive, but Sony delivers on quality for the money.

I would recommend the Sony Playstation Pulse, my brother has a pair and we both approve. I personally own a pair of Astro A40, and A50 love them both.

I've owned the astro a40s, AD700s, I own currently the Astro A50s, Sony pulse elite, and the Sony gold wireless headsets.

They have all fit their own purpose and all have their strengths and weaknesses. But, for my overall gaming I like the Pulse elites.

They are wireless like like the a50s, an official product like the golds so they give you the on screen indicators.  The a40s are good but have little to no bass which is good for online shooters, same goes for the sony golds the bass is weaker than the a40s, you can boost the golds bass with eqs but it sounds sloppy.

The best headphones are the ad700s but with no mic and no bass(I'm not kidding) but one of the best soundstages(depth) I've ever heard. But, it's not the best gaming headphones overall. Best for online shooters by far.

The a50s have the comfort of the a40s style and wireless, but are too bass heavy. It has 3 eqs(Too much bass, Much bass, and STILL too much bass) Sometimes the bass overpowers the rest of the sounds.

I want a balanced sound that will work with just about any game I play.

I think the pulse elites give me that, I thought that the bass impact thing was a gimmick and kept it off for most of the time. Until recently I put it on one or two notches above off and it was perfect! The sound stage is simlar to the golds but with the bass impact it give just the right amount of bass.  I usually switch the eqs(which are mainly for messing with the impact bass  than the sound more than anything) depending on the game I'm playing.

Anyone with the Wireless Gold Headset use on the XBOX ONE?  If so, how do you hook them up?  Do you just plug into the XBOX ONE adapter?  Does anything need to be ran to the TV or console for sound?

I'm looking to remove clutter.

^^ Pretty sure it's plug and play on the Xbox One. Although it's a stereo headset on there, from what I've read.

Really tempted to nab one of these. I can't justify it though, I already have 2 pretty good headsets.

Just picked up the gold wireless headsets, love them, picked them up for $75 thanks to amazon price match and 5$ cert at best buy

the BEST headphones there are , are the Astro A40, followed very closely by its Bluetooth wireless counterpart, the A50
for the price... no thank you! I thought I would never be able to afford a wireless headset, but what the Gold Wireless headset provides for the price is unmatched!

regaurdless nothing....and by nothing, we all mean NADA, comes even close to the astro a40 (and a50). the sony is a good value for the money, but its like a top quality LG vs top Samsung, no matter what, the Samsung top of the line will ALWAYS be better, and these are the top of the line Samsungs for headphones, and for the record, I fuckING HATE their customer service, they are a bunch of little kid teen intern idiots. terrible company, horrible, but the best headphones

im not sure if im reading this post wrong, but if it is stating astros customer service is shit then thats the complete opposite of my experience. they were fantastic when I had an issue, were quick to respond and generous with their assistance.

yeah theyre alright, they were excellent, outstanding to a point, but then after that point, not at all, quite rude actually.

they lied to me, and then duped me out of a bit of money actually, but that's my personal experience, but generally I think theyre as you said, for the most part.

Still haven't used the chat, but have used the Gold's a ton for audio on both PS4 and PS3 the past couple of weeks. I'm very impressed with the sound for the price. I'm no audiophile, so I'd never pay much more than this for headphones anyway.

What is the difference between the Gold and the Pulse Elite's from Sony?  I'm thinking of replacing my 1st gen with a pair of either of these.  I want something I can plug into my XBOX ONE controller easily.

The 1st Gen did not have a Aux out on the headphones.

I like the pulse versions a bit more than the golds.
Both the golds and pulse can be used with other devices(not sure about xboxo, don't have one)
I currently own the golds, pulse, astro a50s, and I picked up the Steelseries wireless H. I think that overall the Wireless H is the best. Really nice but like the astros are expensive.

Gold wireless on sale for 69.99 next week at Best Buy... best price ever, should be a no brainer for anyone looking for headsets!

If you already have some headphones with a detachable cable then you could get an audio cable such as this one to add the boom headset. Most headsets do have an in-line mic but with is hanging down the voice is not picked up too well. It can be position closer by hanging the cable down my other ear but its still not as good as an actual boom headset.

The gold headset look good too but its a little too Sony centric to me and lacks some features that would allow using it on other platforms. The earlier Pulse headsets seemed to have a 3.5mm input on the usb transmitter but the golds does not appear to have this.

The Playstation Gold is the best bang for your buck gaming headset out there by far.
I agree for $70 you are correct sir.

just adding to the OP point, the man is a self described audiophile, and therefore the astro a40 is the best headset there is by far, in fact, there is a brand new astro a40 set on sale right now with the additional opional powered splitter

$200 for a brand new a40 and the powered splitter is a STEAL

I wouldn't say the a40s are the best. An actual non gaming headphone plus mixamp would be the way to go.

But as far as features, options, and sound out of a gaming headset, it has to go to the Steelseries wireless H. They have the most balanced sound, plus a custom eq that you can set yourself.

Sorry man, the astros are the best. the mixamp pro is really the key, the headset you can use any with them, like the steel or titan, but i wouldnt mix n match when they are the best....the amp is untouchable, and the headsets as good as any other $400 set

but you cant compare anything to astros, not the steel or titan, its in its own league. I honestly prefer the wired a40's, but the a50's are practiccally the same wireless.

now bang for buck, the sony headset is a killer price/deal, but if money isnt an issue, you cant beat Astros, not yet anyway
