New Wii U Owner! Few questions (suggestions, where to get remotes, games suggestions, etc)

Rougue

CAGiversary!
So I bought a Wii U basic with some games off someone from a local facebook yard sale page for $140.  It included NSMB U, Skylanders swap force (with 6 characters), Wii Fit U with balance board, and a Wii remote (not motion plus).

Here are my questions.

1. Where can I get some cheap Wii motion plus remotes?  I'm a dad/gamer, but have 3 kids who I'll want to play MK8 with.  I saw that in the past nintendo have refurb'd Wii motion plus remotes for $20, is that still around?

2. I have no need for Skylanders Swap force OR Wii Fit.  What should I expect to sell those for?  Swap Force homes with 6 characters and Wii Fit U has the balance board.

3. What games do you suggest?  I have SM3DW coming via amazon today... that game looks awesome.

I'm about to order MK 8 via BB with their gas card promo (thinking I'll do Zelda WW as the free game)

Any other games I should consider?

So far I'm very impressed with the system (current ps3 &360 owner... grew up with nintendo though).  The game pad screen is awesome (gaming while someone is watching TV is a great feature for my family).

Thanks!

Welcome to the Wii U family. I will answer your questions as best as I can.

1. NIntendo still has the refurbs on the Wii Remote Plus and the Nunchuk for $20. Just saw them an hour ago before this post. So you are in good shape there. Definitely recommend them for some of the games, such as SM3DW and the Mario U and Luigi U games.

2. Wii Fit and Skylanders are going for a little on the cheap side if you sell to Amazon, around $40 each one you try to sell. I have the Wii Fit U and I could never part with it. Skylanders I am not sure on the price they could give you for them. It all depends on what pieces they are.

3. Games to consider. This is a toughie, since there are many. If you want to sink alot of hours into RPG land and grinding, I would suggest Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. If you are into the Nintendo side of things...definitely W101 for a great challenge. Rayman Legends's best version of the game is on Wii U. Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is an amazing platformer and challenging later in the game. Mario Kart 8 is going to be great. Lego City Undercover is a hidden gem. With load times on the long side, when you get into the game, it really takes advantage of the Gamepad the way it should. But if you like open world gaming, go with that one. Plus your kids will love it. But my favorite is Deus Ex Directors Cut. Simply put, the Wii U gamepad is totally immersive with this game. If you played it before, this version will make it a new game.

Off TV play is awesome too once you get used to it. I think the hate on the system is way blown out of proportion. Once you own the system, it definitely grows on you and you find that is simply impressive.

nighthawkalpha0.. thanks for your comments. Yes, The nintedo store finally opened again yesterday. I ordered two remotes w/ nunchuck for $20. This will be perfect for MK8 and SM3DW which just came in yesterday.

I will definaltely check out your game recomendations. You bought up a few I hadn't even thought of (Dues Ex, Lego, W101).

Another question.... what is this Wii Sports thing on the console? Currently because I don't have motion plus controllers it won't launch. Is it a Wii Sports U sports game?

The Wii U Sports thing on the console are the same as the Wii Sports games, except there are twists to them.

You can now play bowling, golf, and tennis online with other Wii U Sports Club people and you can join clubs to compete. You can join clubs are are people from your state that you in. Example: if you live in New York, you can join a New York club. The cost is $9.99 for each game or a day pass for $1.99. But you have to have the Wii Motion Plus controllers to play them. But the graphic clairty is more defined due to the bump in graphics. Still fun.

I'd recommend browsing through all of the Wii U games on Amazon, there's a fair amount that are dirt cheap now.  I picked up FIFA for $12, never played a soccer game before but it's fun and uses the Gamepad well.  Also got Mass Effect 3 for $10, haven't played it yet but was always curious about the series.  Zombie U was under $15 the last I checked, Assassin's Creed 4 has been under $15, the only good thng about 3rd party sales being so poor is the prices on a lot of games dropped way down.

If you're concerned about internal storage on the wii u, you can always buy an external HD, or even a flash drive (if you know where to get them 64 gig flash cards are down to about $30, now, or at least the one I got was.)  I know you didn't ask that, but I thought I'd let you know, anyway, with you getting a free game from MK8.  As far as your questions, try going to a local pawn shop, I always find cheap controllers there.  Also, you may want to get a battery pack for your wii u tablet, because not only does it have a junky battery life, but it also drains it's life while off.  (if they've fixed this somehow, please, someone enlighten me).

I really can't say anything since the posts above me have covered everything. I highly recommend Donkey Kong Country Tropical freeze and Wonderful 101 if you like crazy pikmin/viewtiful Joe (its more than that).

Have fun.

This.

I just ordered 007 legends for $9 bucks on Amazon. Has questionable reviews, but for the price it was :)

Thank you for this info. With is being just the basic, I hadn't really thought about the storage aspect yet, but I knew I would need to look into it soon with the free game from MK8.

The external storage solution is definitely the better deal with the Wii U. The other two aren't currently doing external storage. Installing and unistalling to put new games on the new systems is a chore.

As far as the tablet battery, yes, it is a little on the rough side. It does drain a bit. However, Nintendo did make a extended battery a while back. But I haven't seen it in their store. Im sure they will be bringing it back or you could ebay or amazonian it.

Amazon has had some really good prices on games lately. I recommend getting them there. I check alot to see price drops and there are quite a bit of deals on Wii U games if you catch it at the right time. That is how I built my library of games pretty quickly.

Not only does the wii u offer external storage, but it's integrated so seamlessly, it's amazing.  (No separate menus, it's integrated straight into the regular menu)

Do you all have any specific links to storage options?  I don't need a ton of storage, something around 120GB would do for me.  Any one know where I can pick up a cheap USB 2.0 hd?

Thanks Gden.  Is it ok to use a usb flash vs. hd for games?  I read something about not using cards for storage because of the read/write involved.  I'm assuming a usb flash is different?

Also, anyone know of anything around $40- $50 that is a external drive of any size?

hey guys, love the topic, i've been thinking about getting a wii u, and im stumped on the external storage. so Gden, you haven't had an issues with a your flash drive?  can you down load games to it and play them? sorry for sounding like a noob. but the price of a flash drive is much better then trying to get an external hard drive. would love to just be able to use a thumb drive. i had just gotten a 64gb one, thats not even opened, would love to use that one for storage.

Super Metroid from the EShop IS awesome and allow for off-tv play. I luv luv luv it. NintedoLAnd I also Luv, IIRC if it came with the wii u basic now. You could try to find a Wii U game that came bundled with a wiimore + controler i.e. wii u play on the cheap.

Lego batman 2 and Lego MArvel are out for wii u but not exclusive. You may already have those for your other systems.

You can also play wii games in the wii U so you can get  some of them as well if you want.

I would tell you to get Zak and Wiki but good luck finding it. (It was an awesome game).

Yes, you can use a flash drive on the wii u, as your external drive, it just formats it, and it works fine.  The only problem, (something I discovered yesterday) is that the wii u can only use one external drive at a time, so I had to unplug my 16 gig one to use my 64 gig one.  Moving from one to the other takes a bit, but not too long.  Basically, the wii u counts it automatically as part of it's total storage as soon as it's plugged in and formatted, so once the internal memory is out of space, it starts putting games on the usb drive.

I ended up getting a small 32gb flash drive for my free MK8 Download (I choose Zelda).  It works great plugged into the back of my WiiU.  A few weeks in and I am very happy with my purchase.  The polish that Nintendo puts on their games is second to none.  I now have New Super Mario 3d Land, Zelda HD, Mario Kart 8, and New Super Mario Bro's U.  I got 2 additional Wii Motion Plus remotes via Nintendo's refurbished deal for $20 each with numchuck.

Thanks Gden :) i appreciate the feed bavk, gonna use the 64 flash drive. So I pulled the trigger! And ordered the Wii u. Fingers crossed should be here by the end of the week :) will be getting mk8 when it gets here.

Rougue very awesome!

I'm super pleases with my Wii U thus far. Put about 20 hours into Mario Kart already (I bought the MK8 bundle). I'm on summer break (I teach Middle School). Got a couple of hours in Pikmin 3, as well. I also bought NES Remix. It is a cool little game. I would suggest checking that one out, Rougue. Essentially, it is a mix of NES games that are separated into quick, bite-size challenges. I'm having a lot of fun with it in between my Pikmin and MK8 sessions.

Those are great games.

Now that the e3 is under way, the first day is out the way, and announcements galore today. I can't think of a better time to pick the Wii U up at this point. You would be missing out on alot of crazy fun games. I am completely satisfied with the Wii U and today's digital event pretty much sealed it for me. I won't be playing another system except the Wii U. Between now and 2015, my wallet will be completely burned to the ground by Nintendo. No joke. If you are on the fence on getting it, there are too many games that are must haves coming if you are a Nintendo fan.

Same, my wallet (and my husbands, because I will make him buy me some  ) is crying already, so many good games announced for wii u :D

Finally watched the Direct vid and gotta say I'm pleasantly surprised.

I normally watch these expecting the same ole', same ole'.  But just like how Mario Kart & 3d world got me excited last year, I'm pretty pumped for what they showed this year.   Yoshi and Splatoon are the two games I didn't know about that I've gotta have!

Oh, man, tell me about it! Mario Maker looks sick. I'm very excited to play the new Yoshi game with my wife, and Bayonetta, Captain Toad, and Hyrule Warriors will keep me happy until the Yoshi's, Kirby's, and Splatoon's and others hit next year. I'm also kind of interested in Devil's Third. We will see how that one turns out. Looking good in Wii U land, if you ask me!

Can someone explain the WiiU special "Deluxe Digital" promotion that they have going on right now. I already have a valid Nintendo Network ID I set up for my sons 3ds but whenever I try to log it in on this site it comes up as invalid.

https://p.nintendo.net/deluxe/

Do I have to register my WiiU first and than transfer over my Nintendo Network ID to the WiiU before the promo will work? Also do i have to buy something first from the WiiU shop before the promo will be come active?

Thanks

On the right side, just above where you login, it says: "First time here? Sign in 24 hrs after your first eShop purchase on the Wii U Deluxe Set."

I have few questions about the WiiU special "Deluxe Digital" promotion. My refurb deluxe from Nintendo says it'll deliver by July 1st.

1. You can only get this promotion when you have a Wi U?

2. It says %10 back in points. I have a 3DS and get games through Club Nintendo from the coins for registering games.  Do these game codes from CN coin redemption count towards those %10 back or just the big 59.99 ticket digital games?

3. If they do, does only the Wii U games count or do all games, including the ones I redeem for my 3DS/Wii VC?

I'm guessing only Wii U title get points as this is deluxe promo and they need to sell consoles but you never know.
