I think the demo mode is just a disc.

I would probably buy it to play for a bit, then trade or sell to someone.

The only real concern would be the gamepad controller since that is what receives the most contact. If the demo mode is like the 3DS where some demo carts lock the ability to access the home menu but return to normal once taken out then taking out the demo disk should return back to normal.

Aren't those things in unventilated plastic display cases?  I'm sure the unit will break sooner than most people's.  That said, for $50 I would do it.
