The Spectacular Spider-Man: The Complete Series [Blu-ray] $19.99

Is this the version of Spider-Man that works with SHIELD? I'm not terribly familiar with Spider-Man outside of the 90's.

Nope- this is the awesome animated version of Spider-man. Honestly, the most awesomenest! No mention of SHIELD in this amazing show!

This is the animated Spiderman series from around 2009. It didn't get that much in the way of publicity or promotion, and only ran for two seasons.

As a long-time fan of spiderman in his various animated incarnations, I can confirm that this particular show is indeed one of the very best. While it doesn't branch out into the same level of insanity as the 90s series, the writing and animation maintain a surprisingly high level of polish. The villains in particular are quite strong. This show features some of the best takes on Spiderman's rogues gallery.

At $20 for the Blu-Ray this show is an easy recommendation for anyone who likes spiderman and cartoons. I bought it as soon as it came out.

This show (and Wolverine and the X-Men) were the victim of unfortunate timing. During the production of the second/third seasons of each Marvel was bought by Disney. The way the contracts were laid out, Sony could keep either the movie rights for Spider-Man, or the TV rights. Guess which Sony chose. So, because Disney owned the characters and Sony owned the actual TV series, the series ended up ending outright. Greg Wiseman actually had all 5 seasons planned out.

Just bought. For once not having the money to afford something came out worked out for me. I still have the GL Blu-ray to watch as well. Now where the hell is my Young Justice Blu, so I can die happy?!?!

Exactly, and it was a dam travesty.

Please for the love of god buy this. One of the best animated superhero shows ever, rivaling even Batman: The Animated Series. I can't speak more highly of this show.

I fourth or fifth or 20th this statement, I bought it the week it came out, paid about $10 more, and I don't regret it.

The show is great, no doubt. Arguably the best Marvel cartoon yet.

But it's not Batman: the Animated Series good. Only a handful of cartoons are on the same level. If the show had continued, then MAYBE it might have gotten to B:TAS level, but not the show as it is.

Yeah, Batman: The Animated Series still reigns supreme. But this particular iteration of Spiderman is at least punching in the same weight class. And that's saying something. It stands tall next to series like B:TAS, Justice League, and Batman: Beyond.

For anyone interested, Batman: The Brave and the Bold is almost shockingly good. Its general tone is completely different from most other modern interpretations of the character, leaning much more heavily toward silver-age Batman comics. But the show is extremely well written, and delightfully tongue-in-cheek. It manages to be corny and self-aware while also presenting a genuinely solid cartoon. Highly recommended.

And yes, anyone even remotely interested should get the Spectacular Spider-Man blu-ray set. Its version of Doctor Octopus is perhaps my favourite of all time.

Eh, maybe Beyond. But the show didn't last long enough to compete with Justice League's decade of continuity to draw from.

And B:TAS reigns supreme because half its episodes would never get out of the writers room, let alone made. Especially in the slow, somber, mature tone the series was known for. Gargoyles, Justice League/Unlimited, and Avatar: the Last Airbender are really the only action cartoons that can stand up to B:TAS.

Do note that I am not slamming Spectacular Spider-Man, just saying that other comic book cartoons had significant advantages over this one that they took advantage of. I'd put this series on the same level as Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Superman: TAS, Batman Beyond, Batman: Brave and the Bold, and Young Justice.

Wow...Marvel really doesn't gave many good shows under its belt, do they?

They just need to make the 90s Spiderman complete series and I'll be happy.
I am honestly surprised this hasn't been done yet. You would think Disney would want to take advantage of the Amazing Spider-Man movies (since they do make money from them too) and cross-promote it by releasing old Spidey shows. Plus, I believe their X-Men DVDs actually sold pretty well.

I certainly bought them. To be fair, the X-Men cartoon has almost certainly aged better than the 90s Spiderman. While there are some fond memories associated with 90s Spiderman, the show was guilty of some of the most egregious animation recycling. On the other hand, it had Mark Hamill playing the Hobgoblin, and that was awesome.

While it doesn't hold up quite as well, it would still be fun to have a copy of it. If they released it I would probably get it, even if it was only available on DVD. I imagine there might be some manner of licensing issue, the current licensing surrounding all things Spiderman is a bit of a mess. It's why we're getting the new series of films. If they released 90s Spiderman at this juncture, they would probably be able to make money off it.

I rewatched the 90s Spider-Man on Netflix a little while back, thought it held up OK. Storyline's were a bit neutered but characterizations were spot on and a lot of the memorable moments still worked well. That being said, it's not as cleanly done as say X-Men or the DC stuff but probably one of my sentimental favorites.
