So....are you happy?

people that think that money doesn't help you be more happy have never been without it.

people that think their happiness is derived from their bank account have never learned to appreciate it and will never have enough money.

According to my state (Connecticut) I should be happier than a pig in shit. Maybe if I were single?
I think it's more because the location variations within a state. I have never lived outside of California, but I know for a solid fact that $950,000 is far, far from enough to support a house mortgage in the bay area, or Irvine/Pasadena. It would be more than enough for places like San Bernadino.

This is poorly made.

It should be based on income AND cost of living. Most of those beige states would be a LOT higher on the list.

I think it does, it's not a average of income by state, but how many you have to make in order to be happy in said state. The beige states are low on the list because the cost of living is low, and you can be happy with relatively lower income.

Never been to states like Missouri, houses must be cheap there.

Money buys you security, and I think that is what some people rely on to feel like they are happy. Less stress = more happy for some individuals.
That's exactly it. I suppose the original chart is pretty accurate. (It needs some further refinement by metro area - if you make $75k a year in SF, or NYC you're poor and stressed.)

Overall I could see how based on state, making X means you are less inclined to stress about bills or housing etc, which IMO is the #1 impediment to happiness. Making more than x might make your life easier or you can buy more toys but won't make you any happier.

Hah - I'm a pile of crap apparently. I thought I was doing pretty well as a chemical engineer but I need to be making 250K to be successful in Boston.
You only need to make that much if you insist on living in Boston proper. Even then, there are places that are right in the city that you can get away with for much less if you're not too picky about the size of your place. If you can tolerate a 20 minute ride on the train into the city, you can make $30k and be doing fine, which is maybe 5 miles out.

Wow this chart depends on you living in the middle class range, ie at least being a manager at some office building. This could provide plenty of fuel for the fire of the minimum wage debate, or heck, earning in general.
