Bravely Default how do you get more people into your village

I have 20 friends but it says i have only  1 person in village. 

i had this game before and download like 40  friends Ids and had like 40 or more  people in my village on the other cart  

You have to tell the game to check online for friends, or something like that, and if you do it once a day, you get a free one, too.
