Last-Gen clinging and delayed next gen games rant

Ok, so ps4 and xbox one have both been out for a long time. No supply issues. Xbox 1 has even gone through several price drops(this makes me laugh). PS4 is an incredible value at 399.99. My question is this. Why are developers so set on clinging to the past? Destiny is a prime example. Cannot wait for it! Why is it being put on 360 and ps3? The teams forced to code for these outdated consoles could be used to maybe get the game out early or (gasp!) on time? And before you tell me about all the old consoles that people still have I say this... Maybe your game isnt so great? I bought a ps1 to play Resident Evil. I bought an N64 to play mario64. I bought a ps4 to... play a 1080p version of Destiny? Nope. I guess I bought it to play Resogun(which might be alright as its a great game)

Less than a year is "a long time"?

There's always a transition period between console gens that lasts at least a year or two, particularly since not everyone upgrades to the latest machines right away. (Unrelated, but some of the best previous-gen exclusives come out during those times, too.)

Given that triple-A games are so expensive to make these days, it's good business sense to release multiplatform games on previous-gen consoles for the time being if those ports wouldn't be too much of a pain to make. Think of it as the equivalent of triple-A PC games which have low minimum system requirements, for those many, many people who have older computers that are slower than the latest and greatest, but still work well enough.

Xbox One has received one price drop... of which it really wasn't a real price drop since they cut out Kinect from that bundle.

There are currently ~12 million PS4s and X1s in the world versus ~180 million PS3s and 360s in the world. It wouldn't make sense to completely ignore 180 million consoles, even if the experience is not as good as the current gen.

And you clearly didn't buy a PS4 just to play Destiny at 1080p... since you bought it before Destiny came out. You bought it because you felt there was reason enough to own it.

If that wasn't obvious, sorry. Its about the money. Not everyone buys a system day one like a possessed crack head. And honestly, who can blame pubs and devs for this? It is about expanding the market of potential consumers.

I will still buy Destiny for PS3 and when I find a cheap deal on a PS4 sometime down the line, I will buy it again.

This topic also disproves the idea that these are "dated consoles", implying that it is not cost effective to produce and publish games for them any longer. Look, you want to talk about dated consoles, talk about the Genesis. Its old, but has lots of great games and not one published in the last 15 years. Don't be mad about a game not being a system exclusive or a new system having a lack of games to play (look at the PS3 launch). And as the above user posted, I will take a delay on a game any time so long as it helps make a better game.

The time will come, these systems will have the games that encourage people to buy them for that game. Patience, young grasshopper.

Oh, and just to let you know, there is nothing wrong with Castlevania Symphony of the Night. Maybe your game isnt so great? It is much better than yours :speaktothehand:

As stated, even though the new consoles have been very successful, there's still something like ~150 million peasants who have yet to upgrade, and our money is just as green as Xbone and PS4 owners'. Personally I'm putting off a next-gen console purchase for as long as I can. It may not even be next year now that Mass Effect 4 is looking more like a 2016 release.

My point is... That if the games like Destiny, Hardline were good enough they would move systems. The same way Resident Evil demanded I pay 300 for a ps1. You want it? Come and get it. Its one part $$$ and another part below average games.

Walmart was selling xbox1 launch BUNDLES for 450 a month after launch. And 100.00 is a price drop. No matter what.

You can't really compare this gen to the PS1/N64/Saturn era, which was a much bigger technological leap over what had come before it. Sure, PS4/X1 games look amazing in person, but the difference between them and the previous gen machines isn't as obvious at a glance. That, plus much of the time, system sellers tend to be exclusives-- and neither of the two games you just mentioned are. Sony and MS are betting more on exclusives like No Man's Sky and Halo 5 to sell current-gen consoles than multiplatform stuff like Battlefield and Destiny.

Vinny's point was that you said "several", and one official price drop (made possible by removing an entire piece of hardware) isn't even "a few".

yeah, its pretty reasonable to expect at least a year of transition time where games are being released on 360/PS3 as well.  Developers cant just ignore the large, LARGE install bases of that gen.  Once 2015 hits though you'll start to see them cut the cord a little more.

For me it's simple: No backwards compatibility, charging for online multiplayer and, most importantly, I have a gaming PC hooked-up to my TV.

Every gen gamers get more fucking bitchy about the stupidest things. Im so sick of hearing the crying over cross gen nonsense. got stupid asses go so far as to say if its cross gen that means no buy, If it doesn't have 1080/60fps no buy. stfu already.

Buy me and all us "peasants" the following, in order to eliminate our need to keep gaming on last generation consoles:

for fun
Xbox One  $500, Advanced Warfare Bundle or the Sunset Overdrive Bundle
1 year of Gold membership  $60

Xbox One disc based game $60 Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Titanfall, the Master Chief Collection, Diablo III Ultimate Edition, Grand Theft Auto V, Mass Effect Trilogy, Metro Redux, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, Dying Light, The Walking Dead the Complete First and Second Season, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, Dead Rising 2, Dead Island 2, Battlefield 4, Watch Dogs, Dragon Age: Inquisition,  and all the other Last Generation titles being ported to this generation of consoles.

$50 Xbox currency

PS4 $450, Destiny Bundle
1 year of PS+ $50
PS4 disc based game  All of the multiplatform titles mentioned, InFamous Second Son, Killzone: Shadowfall, and whatever else is coming.
$50 PSN currnecy

It would be so awesome if someone/a billionaire/a millionaire, wanted everyone to go to next generation of consoles and bought everyone this stuff.

Honestly though, I probably would have jumped onto next generation if my PS3/360 games would have worked on their respective next generation consoles, right away.

I still hope for a PS4 that plays PS3/2/1 games and a Xbox One that plays Xbox original/360 games without having the console plugged into the Xbox One.

I know it's never happening but backwards compatibility would make it so much easier to jump into next-gen. Half the issue for me is that I have limited entertainment center space, and too much of a backlog I'm still playing to shelve my 360 and/or PS3. I'd have to set up another television in the basement or something and decide which consoles to demote, and I just don't feel like dealing with that. Give me everything in one package, I'd even pay a premium for it if the option existed!

From a digital distribution standpoint, you simply can't tell people that their old games won't work on the new hardware when places like Steam and GOG exist. Why should anyone support your ecosystem when you won't even support it going forward?

The old consoles, unlike the last generation, are hanging on and will be around for quite a while.

There is no way in the world Microsoft would cut Xbox 360 support like the did the XBOX.

Only Sony kept pushing PS2 games but they were mainly sports and few/far between.

Its amazing people are still on this BC idiocy.
Not idiocy at all.

Most CAGs have backlogs. Some in the hundreds, including myself, and growing.

Games are much different now than they were during the Sega Genesis and SNES days. It was easy for us to move on to another console because games back then lacked the big budget production values like they do now. Some of the best games are compelling, story driven, with memorable writing and sequences that sometimes elevate them into more than a game.

To me, it's like buying a blu-ray player when it first came out that couldn't play DVDs.

Now on the other hand, if you're an online-fps gamer, or a sports gamer who buys the latest CoD or Madden every year then you have a good point.

If you jumped on next gen right away and expected anything other than a ton of cross gen titles and slow to release must own next gen games only then youre a moron. Even more so if youre comparing decades old systems and games patterns to today's market.

I know this is hard to swallow because youre a gamer but to developers and publishers it isnt a past time, it is a business model deigned around making money. So look at it like a money man, do you make a game for maybe 20 millions systems? Or do you make a game for 180 million systems? It isnt hard to figure out which one will make the most sales. Even more so if you make one for them all. They dont care about you as a individual, they dont car if you have a ps4, they dont care about making sure youre happy with what you have, all they care about is money and money will always trump over you and youre whiny little rants.

You have to give it some time and be patient. The new batman game is next gen only and will be the game that really starts next gen only releases. Ps4 has little big planet 3 and bloodbourne and uncharted 4 so those will be a big shot in the arm as well for the system.

You seem awful defensive about something so unimportant though.

It's definitely worse with this current gen than it has been in my memory.  There really isn't jack shit of interest coming out for a long time for PS4/Bone.  This really wasn't the case the last few gens; a year in, almost all the consoles had some great games released.

If anything, the cross-gen games are keeping games on a steady release cycle instead of high-production values that are delaying the next-gen exclusives... racers aren't supposed to be the only AAA 1st party game for a console's holiday (ahem Drive Club on PS4).

I don't need prettier graphics anymore.

I think it is silly to pay $400 for a PS4 at this point if you already have a ps3. What is the advantage of the PS4 at this point, a SLIGHT graphics update from PS3? 99% of the games being released on PS4 are also being released on the PS3. Also, I can still play online for FREE on my PS3, while people with PS4s are paying a subscription fee to play the same exact games I'm playing online for free. To me, the small graphics difference between the the consoles is not enough reason for me to pay $400 plus a $50 per year subscription fee when I can enjoy almost all the new releases on my PS3.
