Seller refunded my payments and wants me to send to another paypal address

I have bought some stuff totalling over $500,  the seller pm's me today saying they are having trouble with their paypal account and wants me to send to another paypal account.  They refunded the money before I even agreed to do this, what should I do?  Send the money back to their original account or send it to the other account?

 
They are digital codes but yes.  They are saying they cant verify their paypal account so it is limited so they are making a new one.  My concern is what happens if some of the codes I bought have issue, would I have any recourse with this new account?

If you paid the seller.. AND the codes work (i.e. you have redeemed the ALL... successfully) ... AND he issues a refund via the original transaction, then I don't see a problem.

You'd be getting your $500 back into your PayPal account (instantly if you paid with funds already in your paypal account... a little bit longer if it was funded via a Credit or Debit Card or checking account) so I don't see the harm in sending it to a different account.

Just make sure you receive the refund back through a refund on the original transaction. If he just sends you $500 as a payment or a gift he could later claim that the payment wasn't authorized and it would be pulled back from your account---that is why it's important to make sure you receive a refund and not a payment.

 
First thought is that's a big no-no.  I would probably want the seller to relist using the other paypal.  However, if you have the stuff already, i think the worst they can say is that you didn't pay, and that the other transaction is something else, but since you have the stuff, I don't see the big deal.  Unless they somehow proved that they sent the product to you and still try to get more money from you.  Not sure.  Maybe have the seller post something that you paid via an alternate paypal account so at least you have a record.  I would test to make sure the codes are good though before sending the money to the new account.

 
What was said, plus: I can easily see a seller having issues getting >$500 out of a specific Paypal account.  Paypal has been known to freeze accounts that suddenly have large sales just to make sure it's legit.  It's been their MO for years.  I remember CAGs complaining of having their accounts frozen for up to 6 months back when PS3s were selling like hot inflated cakes, solely on the basis that they've never sold an $800 item before.

Oh, that said: the seller probably should have cleared it with you first before sending your refund.  You could technically (and callously), walk away whistling dick and they'd be SOL.  Sellers can't leave negative feedback for buyers any longer and they refunded you on their own accord.

They said they were having issues verifying their account(name and address) and they have created a new account.  It seems like paypal could very easily detect the new account is an alt account if they created it from the same computer.  This  seller is either up to something or very naive, they refunded me over $500 before I even agreed to do this.  If I was a crook they would be screwed

Yes.. but make sure they refunded you as they could have just sent you $500. There is a BIG difference between the two. A refund would mean that the $500 you sent them was refunded (i.e. returned) via the original transaction.

If they just sent $500 as a payment they could later open a case claiming you didn't fulfill your end of the bargain OR if they sent $500 as a gift they could later, after you send them $500 again, claim that they didn't authorize that transaction.

 
When I logged into my paypal I had three separate refunds from the three transactions.  One for 425, one for 50 and one for $60

I agree with you. I would wait on it for a few days in case the real account owner pops back.

Opening a new account does absolutely nothing to fix verification. It needs the same information.

It might be a scam involving a hijack. The owner might get the account returned late and his money could be used as a sign of good faith to trick you into voluntarily sending it elsewhere.
