Beware of Rakuten/Buy.com

I have had this very thing happen on other major sites.  Sometimes the listing is not what the item really is.  Probably a issue on the back end and the item # listed is actually something else and that something else is what you receive.  I've never had it happen with buy/rakuten but I have had it happen on Amazon and Newegg.  They took the items back at their cost when this happened so no skin off my back except a little wasted time and being let down on a deal.  As long as the retailer takes the item back at no cost to you, its really no harm no foul, I'm not sure if buy/rakuten are doing that but they should be.

If a deal seems too good to be true....

No issues with the few times I've used them either but the past issues are pretty well known.  I personally think they've been overblown a bit by people who saw there were people getting fraudulent charges so everyone just assumes if they got fraudulent charges and at some point before they used Rakuten that the two things were connected when that may not necessarily be the case.  Still the sheer number of reports last year leaves little doubt there was probably a breach.  I personally think it's plenty safe now though.  I'd use them again without a second thought.

I guess it's good info, but those are mostly Slickdeals threads and 0% CAG threads.  If used wisely, there usually aren't any beware-worthy problems.

I bought a decent X360 hard drive for cheap on there (off brand, china built but it worked flawlessly and got it for $30) two years ago.

They still e-mail me 3 times a day even though I've opted out of e-mails many times.

Aren't they just a market of resellers for the most part?  I've only bought 2 cheap cases on there (iphone and ipad mini) and they shipped on time and were the same color as described.  They were a bit lower quality than I expected based on the sellers photos and descriptions, but they were so stupidly cheap I knew they would be pretty janky.  They fit properly though and haven't fallen apart so I don't really care.  Not sure I would buy anytthing "name brand" off there to begin with.

I've purchased from Rakuten several times this past year using PayPal and never had issues. I was told as long you don't use your credit card, you're good.

I've purchased 4 tablet cases from them within the past year.

Had to return one due to a defect and that was a hassle free experience. Money was refunded once they got confirmation the item was put into the mail.

Other than a defect of which they couldn't be to blame I haven't had any issues and would certainly buy from them again.
