Forgive me for sounding like an ass but wtf were you people when Sega needed you to BUY the Dreamcast?!

Sega has done more for the video game industry, even more than Nintendo(though Miyamoto-san has done a great deal in contributing to quality gameplay) and yet everyone here is just trying to remember fondly.

The Dreamcast had the first modem built into a system with the encouragement of online play and the last game featuring Yoshitaka Amano's artwork as well as the FIRST Co-Operative Survival Horror game(no it wasn't Resident Evil, it was "Legend Of the Seven Mansions" by Koei).  The list goes on, even before.

Lets do the video game industry a favor and demand a new console by Sega.  Imagine a launch lineup starting with SOA2 as well as bringing back Mizuguchi(?) and Naka-sama as well as Suzuki-sama.

I used a Dreamcast as a toilet seat to celebrate the anniversary of its demise.

I was waiting until it failed to buy it for $20.

Funny ackbar but the castrated Sega of today is the reason why we have the comparative lackluster full budget games of today that don't push the envelope but churn sequel after sequel.

I would argue Sega was the best of Japanese and Western ideology in gaming but especially in SOA.  It married the strong story Japanese RPG's are known for with Western exploration and did it well, arguably perfectly.

So you are arguing that there is no competition today? Because it seems to me that there is more now than than there was then. Maybe SEGA just had a unpopular business model.

I don't know if your post is tongue in cheek but if it's not your being an ass.

There are so many reasons the Dreamcast failed that it's hard to count on two hands. It boils down to a few things... It's features were ahead of it's time (wealthy people had sustainable internet for the modem. Middle class and lower did not). It's lack of third party support was Nintendo bad but where Nintendo succeeds is in it's first party and creating a brand behind it... Sega didn't. Sega had two mediocre Sonic Adventure games on Dreamcast and Crazy Taxi. The quirky Japanese stuff never caught on (Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue, Chu Chu Rocket) even if a few of us loved those games.

So stop pretending like the Dreamcast is overlooked or some rare piece of hardware people missed out on or dismissed. It's one of my favorite game consoles of all time but I also bought a PS2 a year later and put hundreds of more hours into it. Which you probably did too.

I'll raise a glass of whiskey to the Dreamcast but it was a failed experiment for the game industry to learn from.

Yes I admit Sega was stupid as fuck to take a loss on their system considering they were a gaming company first and foremost but their product was so much better then the vast majority of the companies today.  Luckily Nintendo learned to sell their consoles for a profit.

No competition for the Arthouse product of the type Sega delivered.  Sure there are games like "Ico" but the look presupposes they're arty,  Sega's games were like, "We don't give a fuck this is who we are.".  The money was spent to give those games the finishing treatment unlike any games that resemble or have any hint of the promise we saw with Sega.

edit:  To last post,  I was dead serious.  No sarcasm was intended.

There's nothing "quirky" about Skies.  It's not some wink and nod Animeish shit.  Like I said before it married the best elements of Western and Eastern RPG's together and I truly believe that if a dyed in the wool Western PC RPG player can't see that than he's just being a jingoistic ass towards Japanese games.  If you want to debate other Japanese RPG's fine, but I just don't see how one can bitch on Skies unless you want to gripe on it's encounter rate.

In terms of the internet comment implying that I got online back then means I'm rich?!  WTF?!  As for the PS2 are you fucking kidding?!  For the first year of the PS2 they had jack shit for lengthy games that were pretty unless they were Dreamcast ports or started on the Dreamcast.  Case in point, "Devil May Cry", "Onimusha" and "The Bouncer" were the first really pretty PS2 developed games I remember in the first year and they were short as fuck.  I hope that 100's of hours comment is referring to the lifetime of the PS2 and not the first year.

"Sonic Adventure" was not mediocre.  God forbid a Sonic game should not just be stages and have some exploration element.  It's not a rare piece of hardware but Sega's attitude is I think to some extent.

"Segagaga" got released because they saw one of their employees just screwing around on a Doujin product and said "Hey why not publish this on the Dreamcast?".  What company do you know would decide to publish a tongue in cheek nod to Sega and a subsequent stab at competitors as well as another figure in the japanes emedia.

Sega's stuff fails because Sega markets for shit here.  Their product was great at the time but Sega never figured out how to get people to play their stuff so they'll buy it.

I thought we'd get a new SEGA console for sure after they bought Atlus. We still might.

Again, I love the Dreamcast but what you're saying is they're awesome for sacrificing millions for supporting "indie" (hate that word) style games. While PC, Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft let that genre sit and develop until it was a steady and a profitable means for US GAMERS to access. It's like... You can have a burnt steak from Denny's but wouldn't you rather have a steak that took a while to cook with a warm pink center (I'm hungry)?

This seems willfully ignorant of economics.

We should all just be admiring the Treamcast. Now THAT is mobile gaming. Who has one? I regret not buying one when they were $100 on ebay.

Ack Sega had the chance to possibly revive with 2K Sports and Football but the assholes at the NFL fucked us over for that.
2K was great, and so was World Series Baseball. I don't think sports games sell a system. It needed it's own GTA 3, or HALO. The Dreamcast never had that big time exclusive, and it never did.

Maybe Sega would still be in the hardware business, if they didn't burn their consumers throughout the '90s (with the constant barrage of system add-ons and quickly ending support of numerous systems).

I still don't get how Microsoft could rip off the basic Dreamcast controller design for their Xbox controllers and still, 6 years later worth of technological advances and studies, and the 360 controller has a worse d-pad than the damn Dreamcast controller.

Dreamcast will forever be the best video game console to have ever been released.

Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue, Dead or Alive 2, Skies of Arcadia, Capcom vs SNK 2, Power Stone, Space Channel 5, Soul Calibur, Space Channel 5...nuff said.

You name 9 games, no system has even 10 great games? My feeling is that most do.

Dreamcast 2 will launch with Nights: Majestic Flight and Skies of Arcadia 2 in Japan on 12/13/14. Word on the street is that Pier Solar HD and NFL 2K16 will be bundled with it when the system is launched in the states on 9/9/15. Seaman 2 is a rumored downloadable title.
