Sgt. Tahmooressi vs. Bowe Bergdahl and why the situation's FUBAR.

I'm surprised there's not a post about this. So there's Obama supporters and haters on here and that's fine. But this is just wrong. What I want to know is why Obama swiftly traded 5 of the highest ranking "officers" in Al Qaeda we had held captive for a deserting P.O.S. like Bowe Bergdahl. However, he won't give the time of day to even ATTEMPT to rescue Sgt. Tahmooressi, who merely made a wrong turn in Mexico. 

I don't care who you are or what your political views are. This whole situtation with Bergdahl and Sgt. Tahmooressi is FUBAR.

plus why is the guy traveling with a shitload of arms?  I though transporting arms used to be a felony

Simple difference, Bergdahl was captured in a place where we have active military operations and by an organization which we are in engaged in hostilities.

Tahmooressi committed a crime in a foreign country of which we are allied. If we were to "rescue" him from Mexico it would set a precedent that any American would be immune for crimes in any foreign country because of "mistake" or "misunderstanding".
 
I think Flying was implying that we should "trade" rather than "rescue"... but I don't really like the idea of trading in either case, unfortunately. It has to be covert if it's going to be done at all; not trumpeted so that we lose the PR battle and encourage more of that behavior by our enemies.

LOLZ...NOTHING POLITICALLY BIASED TO SEE HERE!!! :rofl:

Bergdahl was an active member of the military which made him, for all intents and purposes, a POW, regardless of his desertion status that hasn't really been proven. Tahmooressi, on the otherhand, is no longer an active member of the military aka a civilian, hence the descriptors of "veteran" or "former marine" in front of his name in several places in the article.

Seriously though, what is it with conservatives trotting out bullshit out of their ideological think tanks AND THEN posturing about how that bullshit should be politically neutral? It's like they're eating their own shit out of their asses, then saying EVERYONE should LOVE chocolate because they think their shit IS chocolate, and then wondering why no one wants to eat their chocolate! It's really fucking strange

Bergdahl's desertion hasn't been proven? How about witness statements from his platoon members? That good enough?

Former marine or not, he needs to come home. Once a marine always a marine.

I guess the big question here is "Why trade FIVE of the highest ranking officers that we had held captive for ONE deserter, yet not make any attempt AT ALL to bring home Sgt. Tahmooressi?" He's the fucking president. I'm willing to bet he can pull a string or two.

And let's not even think about what harm those 5 radicals that were released can do to the U.S. Plus one for homeland security. But, I mean... Obama didn't organize the trade of those 5 radicals. I mean, after all, he doesn't negotiate with terrorists, right?

Given that desertion is a crime and a key component of our judicial system is "innocent until proven guilty" by the appropriate court, no, the comments of some people on a TV show are not good enough to say that desertion has been proven.

As others have noted, Tahmooressi committed a crime as a civilian and was consequently arrested by the local government. There's nothing connecting the two events besides a vague "But... military!"

Tahmooressi sounds doomed, especially since he did commit a federal crime within North America. He should've picked something slap wristier, like spy for a VERY TREASURED US ALLY. Though, with this sh-storm, we're probably going to get him back?

I guess everyone forgets whether or not Obama got Bergdahl back, they still would say fuck the President. Either one American is worth less than three terrorists, or the other way around. Doesn't matter. Complain all you want.

Civilian smuggles guns and hundreds of rounds across border, is shocked to be arrested.  News at 9.  Can you imagine the outrage that would take place if this was an illegal entering the US with the same weapons and was let go?

I see nothing wrong with how it is being handled.

It was based on a near innocent mistake and for that I can empathize with him, but lots of crimes are the result of innocent mistakes. I really do feel for him but the US government should not, and can not, interfere here. As I said before, the precedent it would set would create too many issues.
 
I just looked up the story. The President got him back, and the obstructionists are complaining. We can go back to Benghazi. Status quo.
