In 2014 WHO Is The Best Option For PS3 YLOD Repair?

Sean Price

My 80gb MGS4 PS3 bundle just went down with a YLOD..

I want to know in this day and age.. 2014 to be exact.

1. Who/What is the best company out there for a PS3 YLOD repair?

   - my top contenders are http://www.ps3repairshop.com/ and http://www.gophermods.com/

2. Is it NOW known that a REFLOW is more or less just as effective as a REBALL?

3. Anyone else wonder why no one has figurd out how to crack the code for ps3's propriety lockdown on system restores/data?   i.e. why a pc can't read a ps3 data hard drive or y u can't restore your backup to any ps3

Let me know party peoples!

At this point, your best option is not to repair it at all, just buy a used slim/superslim and move on. Even after a "repair", a YLOD PS3 probably isn't going to last you very long, and the newer PS3 models are much more reliable than the original phat model. I got a used, near-mint PS3 slim 160gb from Cowboom for about $100; plenty of deals can be had out there.

Contact Sony directly. They will let you "trade in" your PS3 and buy a Refurb 250GB PS3 for $99. Also one person reported they had a PS4 returned to them instead of a refurb PS3. Good luck.

1st off.. thanks for the replies!!

However Gentlemen.. I need to repair this PS3..  not counting my data on there..  aka 76 hours of Far Cry 3 and that iLL as what Killzone Bullet interactive video.... but also my 90+ UNOPENED PS3 back catalog of games...

So unfortunately a PS4 would not help me and I already have a 500gb SLIM that I got for $150 like 5 months ago..

the key thing here is my data....  with YLOD ps3 won't even turn on, which is why I can't remove my Far Cry 3 out of it..

If what you want is to get your old PS3 fixed so you can transfer all your data to your 500gb PS3, look on YouTube and fix it yourself. That's what I did with my old school phat PS3. Go to RadioShack and get some arttic silver, heat up the GPU and CPU, then hit them with a thin layer of the arttic silver. That should make it work long enough to transfer all your data to the slim. If I can do it, anyone can. It's worth a try and only cost you about $15.

My brother fixed his PS3 himself, it worked for a while died again.  I need to fix my PS3 because I want the version that's backwards compatible.  I don't want to fix it myself, that's too much work.  There's a place called ifixit near me I might let them take a crack at it.  But then again, it'll probably be better to wait till Hyperkin makes a retro PS2.

gentlmen,

1st off,  I appreciate the responses.. Thank YOu!

Here's the thing... I don't want to repair mines, I would rather have a "professional" do it rather than me putz around with it. Time being the biggest reason but also it seems that the REFLOW done by a proffesional on a Reflow/Reball station lasts a lot longer than the home DIY job..

Data recovery is the main driver but hey would be nice to be able to use my original phat ps3 here and there...

Thats why I was looking to see if anyone had any recommended places.. besides the 2 I posted.

let me know..

At this point in the life cycle its basically a better deal to just replace it than get it repaired. It's extremely likely it will YLOD again after it get's fixed, so you'd just end up having to get it fixed again if you continued using it. If you just want to get it fixed to grab the data and your disk out then keep it as a backup it might be worth fixing, but then you should probably move over to using your other PS3 as your regular system instead of risking the fixed one dying again with a bunch of your data on it.

I can't give any comment on prices or how good places to get it fixed are as I never bothered to fix my launch 60GB when it YLODed. Just opened it myself and pulled the game out then got a new PS3.

The data preservation is what you're seeking....

Though, you can do what I did instead and take one of the poster's advice which is trade your old to sony and get a slim for $99 to $150

You can get your PS3 to work for about 10 minutes, just enough time to grab the memory and game... The hot blowdryer trick works very well, this is what I did to my old fatty and then gave sony a call afterwards once I gathered the data on a flashdrive.

I learned of the blowdryer trick on youtube years ago.

Do the PS3 hairdryer trick (google) but do not pretend this will last a long time, which is why I'm saying 10 minutes so act fast once you turn her on.

Thank you fellow ps3's for the time and info...

*sigh*

after 3 weeks researching I still don't have a clear cut winner, just basically my original find ps3repair seems to be the best bet..

ps3repair.com - great price, actual REBALL, lead solder, see the link for full breakdown of what they al do..

  -  one drawback is the turnaround time of 2 weeks.(main reason why I kept looking instead of going to them)

EVERYONE else - they ONLY Reflow and majority of them(gophermods, Fixmyplaystation) do not even really say or explain what the actual Reflow repair involves..

Initially I though this would be like shooting fish in a barrel, d@m was I wrong..

Well I sent in my 60GB PS3 to PS3RepairShop.com for the RSX GPU Reball repair and it took a while (almost 6 weeks), but I finally got it back and it's working.

I've only had it for 2 days and have given it minimal use during the 200 hr break in period they specify.  I was able to backup all my saves to PS Plus.  They also recovered the game disc that was inside.  I hope it holds up but I'm going to buy a slim PS3 whenever Sony does a price drop.

I would recommend them for anyone looking to get their PS3 repaired for the YLOD issue.

Apologies for reviving an old thread, but just wanted to share for ppl who still want to repair a 60GB PS3:

Do NOT go to Endless Electronics, FixMyPlaystation, PS3RepairShop.com, or even PS3 Specialist (aka "Reballing Genius" on eBay).

Reballing is a scam. Take it from someone who has tried all of these companies and has had my PS3 die multiple times afterward, within a few months. It is NOT a long term solution: at this point, I'm not sure there is one.

So I recently powered up my 80gb metal gear edition PS3 to see what was up with it; because since purchasing a slim I haven't touched it; and my bro was going to trash it after buying a PS4 for himself. Initially it powered up and gave the powering on sound but there was no display, just a blank screen, though there were the hints of the star effects.
I tried again and it worked. I inserted a game, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit and started it, no dice. I tried it twice more after leaving it to load for about 10 minutes the first time. All attempts ended with me turning the system off by the power switch in the back after ejecting the disc.
I then tried Madden 09. It booted. However, when I went to try it out in Madden Moments, the game froze after I selected the event I wanted to play leaving me only with the background music from the menu.
Any idea as to what the issue is? I'm guessing its dying. But, is there any way to salvage it? Has anyone else tried the method provided above?
