im finally in the mood to finish final fantasy x...and im on this damn chocobo race part, trying to get 0.00.0 for my time so i can receive the sun sigil...so i can get tidus's legendary weapon...

the first time i tried the race, i received a 0.00.6...now i cant get anything close to lower then that....my question is, is the legendary weapon really worth the trouble? i know you dont need it to beat the game...but is it cool enough to go for, or what?

nah, I got the easy ones (Yuna and Auron) and I did just fine. They arent that good. And I spent 00 hours on this game. You don't need all the weapons. At most 3.

I made yuna stronger than auron. I thought the custom character growth in this game was cool.

there are no real tactics to that other than to get the balloons. And im just wondering are you playing because of my sudden topic earlier about to squaresoft final fantasy X?

nah...im just playing it now because im tired of playing a game and not finishing it because a new game comes out that im hooked on...so now, before i start any other games, im going back and finishing all of the games that i started and didnt finish

Hehe, everyone says this and noone follows through with it (myself included). Too many good games come out, it's hard to keep up. Christmas season this year is gonna kick my wallet's ass.

yeah...seeing how i just bought the chronicles of riddick for my xbox...im thinking this is gonna be an impossible mission...so im trying to forget that i bought it

Gah, that part is so aggravating. That fookin race was the main cause of my PS2 controller replacement and the subsequent dent in my wall. Just go for the ballons and hope those a$$hole birds stay away from your Chocobo. But is it worth it? Nope. All you need is Auron's weapon and that's a smash-athon right there. Yuna's weapon is handy too.

I don't know why, but I found the race pretty easy.. just took me maybe a dozen tries. However if you start the race and there aren't two balloons right in your path, start the race over.. you'll never get it otherwise.

i literally just passed this mini-game today in about 15 minutes. it was frustrating, but i noticed that if you make wide turns, most of the birds will miss you (i'm talking one side all the way to the other side). per cornfedwb's suggestion, it will be much easier if you can get the first 4 or 5 balloons. it's not that hard. the key is to get under 36 seconds and getting 14 balloons (or 15 for more cushion) and only hitting 1 to 2 birds. oh yea, on the 3rd turn, make a left sooner than it allows and you'll get a jump start on the straight away on the home stretch :) (sorry if the directions/hints are confusing, lol.)

Alright, following these tips, I beat the race myself in about 45 minutes back when I got it at launch and just a week and a half ago for a friend in about an hour.

1. Use the d-pad, it just seems to make turning easier.
2. Unless it's directly in front of you, NEVER go for the first balloon. The trainer seems to always get it, and then she'll take the first 4 or 5 easily too. And trust me, you need those first few balloons.
3. It's more important to dodge birds than it is to get balloons. If you must, sacrifice a balloon to avoid being hit. Even though a balloon subtracts 3s and a bird adds 3s, whenever you get hit by a bird, you get stunned for 2 seconds. Therefore, the two are not exactly opposite. Hitting a bird is really more like +5 seconds.
4. Keep trying. There are different balloon layouts. Some of them are going to be easier for you than others, especially when you can get a lot of balloons right in front of you at the start. It just takes a little patience and persistence, but it can be done. It's nowhere near as hard as dodging 200 lightning bolts.

First of all, if you're at all interested in becoming uber-powerful, the legedary weapons are a must. In and of themselves, they're not that great, but once they are fully activated with the appropriate Crest and Sigil, they RULE. Can you say 1 MP use for ALL your spells, forever? Can you say Break Damage Limit (Auron and Tidus do anywhere between 15,000 and 40,000 HP damage per hit now)? Can you say absolute invincibility, especially with the Break HP Limit? Characters with 20,000 HP, dealing massive amounts of damage?

"Useless" is not a term that leaps readily to mind.

Useless leaps to mind when the final boss is still a cakewalk even without a single one of the ultimate weapons.

Cornfed: If you're trying to beat any of the Original Creations in the Monster Arena, don't bother trying without fully activated legendary weapons.

It just depends on what you want to do. The final boss is hardly ever the toughest thing to do. In ANY RPG. The real challenges lie elsewhere.

In any current generation Squareenix RPG, I agree. In ANY RPG, no way in hell. Many old-school RPGs and even many non-Square RPGS in the current generation don't have the FF normal hidden rediculously hard boss thing going on.

Not since the 16-bit days disappeared. I have yet to play an RPG this generation that is NOT Western-developed, that has the final boss as the biggest challenge. Suikoden III's biggest challenge was several hidden monsters as well as getting all 108 Stars of Destiny. Legaia 2 had the Centaurion Challenge and the Arena where Stiehl is 10x harder than the final boss. Wild Arms 3 had a few surprises later on in the game that made the final boss look like a complete wimp.

Going back to the PSOne days, Star Ocean 2 offered the toughest challenge I've yet to see in any other RPG; the Cave of Trials, where the final boss in that dungeon, Celesta, made the final boss of the game look like a pansy (not to mention the Survival (100 battles) Match in the Arena). None of the aforementioned games are Square-related. The idea of alternate, and greater, challenges is not Square-oriented by any means. After well over 50 RPGs in my day, I can say this as a fact.

I'm bumping this 5-year-old thread.

I picked this game up after playing FFVII on the PSN. It's good, but short, so now now I'm trying to get other stuff. And this is the most horrible experience I have ever had in a video game.

The Japanese must be kings of tedious, soul crushing busywork. I didn't play the chocobo racing even once because I knew it would piss me the fuck off. I played that water...ball...arena...minigame whatever one time because it was required by the plot but that was it. Never went back. At least the card battle minigame in FF 9 was mildly entertaining. Every minigame in FF 10 was tedious and drawn out for no reason other then to artificially extend playtime. Out of the 8 FF games I've played this one was probably the biggest disappointment.

i hate how the chocobo only has a radius of 8(more like 6) directions.. i hate it.. its like give me FULL analog motion

I never could get that legendary weapon where you had to do the butterfly stuff. spent TWO years following guides word for word and every time was one butterfly off

My fiance is half Japanese and works for a Japanese company, and this is 100% correct.

So so terrible. The key for me was to take turns with my wife so we could keep trying even when one of us was so frustrated we needed a break (leave room, curse, get a drink, etc). I think it took us about two hours or so and was mainly luck.

I remembering finally beating that damn chocobo challenge at like 2:00 A.M. and being so happy after over 2 hours of frustration. Yeah, getting those weapons sucks, but I managed to get all of them. I just remembered getting the Lulu one at the Thunder Plains and being so tense and jittery trying to time those damn jumps. I remember finally getting to about 188 or so jumps and my Dad opened up the back door to my house and broke my concentration and I missed the jump. He walked by me and I was just kinda staring at the screen not even playing for like 2 minutes.

I finally got it, after struggled for about an hour. I got 0.00 with 13 balloons, 0 bird, and in 36-37 seconds.
Here's some tips from my experience:

1. The first 5 balloons is important, if the first balloon is located near the trainer, don't bother to take it, just focus on getting the second and move on.
2. Never stay in the middle of the track because the birds attack you like crazy. Go to the left side or the right side near the cliff. But I suggest to take the left side, because it is shorter.
3. After the first turn, let the trainer surpass you, because he can be your shield. When the trainer got hit, there is short time where the birds dissappeared so you can use that chance to collect the balloons.
4. Avoiding the birds is much more important than getting the balloons, so play safe!

Hope it will be usefull!

My last playthrough I beat Nemesis and everything and the only fully activated legendary weapons I had were Yuna, Tidus, Auron, and Rikku. fuck blitzball, fuck butterflies, fuck lightning.

I'm replaying it right now though and I'm at Zanarkand. I'll be able to try this race again soon. I honestly don't remember having much trouble with it on the other 2 playthroughs I've done. We'll see how it goes this time. I don't think I'm going to do this Monster Arena this time so I'm not going to try too many times if I for some reason find it hard. I'm not even going to try for Lulu, Kimahri, or Wakka. fuck that shit.

I luckily was able to get the race to 0.00 on like my 5th try, but my other play throughs were normally involving me screaming curse words and having to find my other controller. My last play through I was able to get the weapons for Tidus, Rikku, Auron, Wakka, and Yuna. Wakka's was tedious, but I did enjoy the blitzball games. I always wanted Square to put some time into developing that and really make an awesome game. I attempted the Lightning dodge for Yuna's about 30 times only to yell things that would make my grandmother cry. Learning from Lulu's misadventure I just avoided Kimahri's altogether.

This is my all time Favorite Final Fantasy. i think it took me somewhere between 1 - 2 hours to beat that damn race. i ended up with tidus, yuna, wakka, and auron's final weapons. took me a couple of hours playing blitzball for wakka's if i remember, but ended up loving that minigame after i got good at it.

wakka seems to be able to hit flying creatures the easiest. my final save is at 105 hours, nemesis beaten, tidus, yuna, and wakka deal 99,999 damage on each hit, auron hits for 80,000. the end boss is dead in 2 hits every time.

i still put in more time with ff12 though. 117 hours i think
