Will My PC Be able to handle Doom 3?

Thunderscope

CAGiversary!
I have a Athlon XP 2600+ with 512 MB Ram, 120GB HDD, and a ATI Radeon 9200. Could I play it smoothly or should I just get it for my Xbox?

Assuming your video card has 128MB video RAM, you should be able to play Doom III fairly well, as long as you turn off some bells & whistles.

I believe the 9200 is the base for Battlefield Vietnam, which isn't nearly as advanced as Doom 3. I'd recommend a video card upgrade. The rest of your system should be OK.

From what I've heard, Doom 3 is a totally scaleable piece of software. Meaning it will run well on your system (fps-wise) but not be nearly as pretty as the guy with the fx-53 2 gigs of ram and x800.

I hope DOOM 3 can run on my PC, I was able to run Far Cry and that had pretty high pc specs.

I have a
P4 2.8 ghz
512 DDR Ram
Ati Radeon 9600 128MB card
80 gigs

No worries for your rig Tenzor. You may have to dial down some bells (keep the whistles), but that's a solid machine there. Though I would recommend you getting 1GB of RAM. It'd make a world of difference.

A 9200 can run Doom 3, but it won't run at high frame rates. You would have to dumb down the graphics settings and play at a lower resoultion but yes it can run. Its time for a Card Update. Anything above a ATI9600 or Geforce FX 5600/Geforce 4 TI 4600 should run Doom III well. Your system has more than enough power to run Doom III but the Graphics Card is the bootle neck. There hasn't been an official system spec yet but what from PCGamer recommended a 2ghz CPU, 512 megs of ram, and a ATI 9800 to play doom 3 in all its glory.

Those are the optimal specs?! Oh man, I am so in for a big ass piece of eye candy.

Lets see, the topic creator has a 2600, same ram, and they told him as long as his video card had atleast 128 mb it would run, so....

No, Doom 3 will not work on your system.

When you buy a PC, the receipt shows an expiration date. It is listed as "Purchase date". Any game that hits the market after this date is unlikely to run well on your computer.

The new PC Gamer (September) has a review of Doom 3 and it included the specs. They are:
Required:
P4 1.5 Ghz or equivalent
384 MB Ram
64 MB 3D card(certain GPUs. Lowest is GeForce 3/GeForce 4 MX)

haha i don't think my pc can (would) hande it that well...I saw some specs on another board that were simply outrageous (no freakin clue if they have basis or not....)

Anyway...right now I have:

amd xp2000+
512 pc2100 ddr
geforce 4 ti4200 128mb

what sucks is that my pc at the current status is about at that point where it's not worth it to just by some more memory or a faster processor (of the same type) ... I'm really gonna have to shell out $1k for some new stuff like pretty damn soon.

ATM I'm very seriously considering buying an athlon 64 3200+ and mobo...

Since the mobo will (*should) work with the RAM I have now, just not as well.... I think I'll wait to upgrade that...(and get 1 gb of pc3200)

Plus the next-gen cards aren't all that available right now, so I think i'll buy the cpu+mobo now and video later, rather than the other way around...

Anyway, if I get the 64bit 3200+, it'll be a large improvement over my 2000+ in pure CPU power...
Games should perform better but I think they'll be bottlenecked by the older graphics card??? Ahh oh well... gots to save up a lot of $$$, eventually I'll have a pretty damn good machine (all my other components are already good, audigy 2 zs, z-680 speakers, mx duo mouse&kb, 80+60+160GB HDDs, etc.)

well i'm just 'slightly' intoxicated ( :!: ) (but I still pay attention to my spelling and grammar! Though it may take longer....) and I think it's time to go to bed,...ok then, bye

Good luck Doom-playing :):):)

this week bestbuy has a radeon 9800 pro on sale for 180 after rebate. If you got a coupon in the mail (i did cuz of reward zone), its for 10% off any pc component so you can pick the card up for about 150.

Well I am hoping i get decent FPS with this rig...

P4 3.0 ghz
1 gig Corsair 3500 433 mhz ram
Radeon 9700 Pro
Audigy 2

sounds alot like my rig....

P4 3.0 gig cooled with a copper quad heatpipe heatsink

1 gig kingston hypermax ram

Geforce FX 5900 cooled with a Zalman dual heatpipe silent cooler

Onboard Surround Sound
