Halliburton probed over Iran ties

the real question is, why isnt this front page news?
this is more important than Linda Ronstadt getting booed, and chicken kickers. But its buried in the world business section, why is finding real news so hard?

Considering that the press loves to rip into Halliburton it may suggest the story doesn't yet have enough substance and awaits further developments. A lot of promising scandals die out when the full details ruin the claim.

Answer: There is an election coming up. Republicans/Conservatives have always been friends of Big Businness/Corporate America. The news media & more importantly the sponsors of the news media are big business. A loss for Bush means uncertainty for Corporate America. I'm not saying Kerry will be tough on Big Business we just know that Bush isn't.

This investigation will go nowere because of one thing: The Vice President

You've got to be kidding. We're talking CNN here. If they thought this had legs at this juncture you wouldn't be able to go anywhere near their site without seeing it referenced.

If there were so much ability to turn away investigators why would they have tolerated all the crap that has already been in non-stop circulation for the past several years?

The article says "Halliburton said its Cayman Islands subsidiary, Halliburton Products & Services Limited, has its headquarters in Dubai and is active only in Iran, where it provides a range of services to the state-run Iranian National Oil Company."

I periodically check out http://www.prophecies.us really out of entertainment, not because I believe it all. Anyway, there's this one guy "kklingon" that seems to have gotten a few predictions right. For example, in may 2003 he said

"The evil cabal, (Cheney, Pearle, Runsfield) will get into serious public trouble. Not immediatly, but in about two years time,"

And in December 2003 he said "The Bush "junta" of Cheny and wolfitz/rumsfeldt etc will get quagmired ever deeper into the sticky stuff over the next six months."

Now we got the haliburton and abu grhaib mess.

But to address the topic of the thread, he made this statement in January of this year: it concerns Vice President Cheney.

He is involved in the theft of hundreds of millions of Dollars from a large american corporation, used for "Kick-backs", and bribes, and for illegal funding of the Bush election campaign. He is a thief. I see a small island in the middle of the ocean, very obscure, normally known only for its agricultural produce, that will be pivotal in breaking the evidence. I also see a French Goverment official, possibly a Judge, who has a large part in finding the truth. This is a large conspiracy, on an international scale, over several countries, and they felt very sure they would not be caught.Cheney is complicit in this theft, but it was primarily organized by others.

It is wholesale larceny, to fund Bush. The President knew everything that was going on. I see this breaking, in a very low key way, almost immediatly, but it will either be covered up by the US Media, or ignored. It will take some time to penetrate through to mainstream America. The doopy will really hit the fan, when ordinary Americans find out what has been going on. This is much, much worse than Watergate. This will bring down the Bush regime, in due course, but expect him to either scrape home, or nearly scrape home, in the next election, due to massive fraud and deciet, and manipulating peoples fears and anxieties. |I see much violence and foreign war ahead, in the future.

Do not be suprised by ANYTHING that happens this year. It will be one of the strangest in American history."

Again, I read this out of the entertainment value that it gives me. I find it interesting how he said that bush is manipulating public fear, just as Ridge is getting heat for those public announcements about terrorist plots going on without any credible evidence. For those who despise bush like I do, check the website out and do a search for kklingon. Although most on this site see Bush winning, most don't seem him finishing his second term (being disgraced out of office). We can only hope.

I remember seeing this report on 60 Minutes several months ago. Its common practice for several companies to open an office in the Cayman Islands. From there, they are allowed to do business with "terror state" or countries that the United States has severed business ties with. Apparently, there is a loophole in the law that lets companies get away with that.

I don't remember every detail about the 60 minutes program (I am after all going by memory as I write this) but it never specifically mentioned Hallibuton. I think it mentioned a few oil companies (like Exxon).

Still, Cheney was the CEO of Halibuton and he should of been aware of any wrong doings that the company did. If they find out that Haliburton was indeed guilty, then there is a major conflict of interest in the White House.

Guess we'll find out if kklingon is full of horse shit within the next year:
"Here is a prediction re future events after the Gulf War in Iraq.
In about a years time, (maximum, it could be no more than six months) there will be an American attack on North Korea. There will be a considerable debate before this happens, with many advising against it in the Goverment, but they will be ignored. It will be like hitting a hornets nest. The koreans will attack the American mainland, with terrorist attacks, an attack on an American port, and an attempt to use a nuclear weapon against America. This will not be successful, but it will be close!!. The Chinese will be drawn in, and America will find itself confronting China, in an ominous and tense stand-off. It will seem at one moment as if war with China is inevitable.

At the last moment, all out war will be avoided, but people will have been badly scared.

After this, there will be a political scandle in America, of such huge proportions, involving the Bush Goverment, that "Bushgate" will be likened to the original watergate. Bush and his associates will eventually be utterly disgraced. Bush will be publicly and widely hated, and there will be attempts to put him on trial in America. He will be forced out of office, in disgrace.

After this, there will be widespread relief in America, and it will seem as though the country has woken from the grip of a nightmare. There will be widespread calls and demands for political and social reforms, and many around Bush will face criminal charges. Some will recieve jail sentences. The "BUSHGATE" scandle will begin in a very low key way, just like watergate. But it will grow, and Americans will become very angry. The entire world will feel relieved at the outcome."

"Crisis fatigue". Seriously, how many more times can the public hear "Halliburton" and just turn it off?

"Senator Kerry, what's your plan for rebuilding Iraq?"

Kerry, "If it weren't for Halliburton Iraq would be a full democracy, the world's greatest emerging economy and the French would love us. But due to the cabal of Halliburton, Wolfowitz, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and the rest of the "selected" Bush administration Halliburtion is running wild without oversight and costing the American taxpapers trillions!"

"Senator Kerry, what's your plan for slowing the growth of health care costs?"

Kerry, "Can you believe that Halliburton has a no bid government contract?"

"Senator Kerry, what's your plan for ensuring the continuing stability fo Social Security and allowing privitzation for younger workers?

Kerry, "I'm afraid that under the oversight of this current administration the American public would be forced to buy Halliburton stock putting billions in the pockets of rich Republican donors."

"Senator Kerry, why are you against tort reform?"

Kerry, "I think that it's necessary that all legal recourse be brought to bear on Halliburton and other large corporations and the lawyers doing this work are true American patriots!"

"Senator Kerry, you stated that life begins at conception but are still pro-choice. Can you really balance out those two views?"

Kerry, "It's important to know that Halliburton stay out of the wombs of women overseas!"

Get it yet???

"Get it yet???" - PittsburghAfterDark

Oh, I got "it." I doubt if the "it" was what you intended, but the message has been received.

I should be tired about hearing about the corporate scandals that have taken place during this administration?!?!?! That the only thing that compares in recent memory is the Savings and Loan bailout that happened during the Bush I presidency?

Jesus. If anything like this happened during Clinton, there would be deafening calls of "TREASON!" coming from the Right Wing. How many billions of tax dollars were spent on Whitewater?

Oh, and I like the defense by attacking Kerry idea. I hear that he's a "Flip Flopper" whose ideas are "Out of Touch with mainstream America." I hear the same is true for his ultra-liberal / big business hating running mate. Keep on towing the party line, brother.

Trust me. I won't exhibit signs of "Crisis Fatigue" anytime soon. However, I would imagine that you are getting pretty tired of hearing these kinds of stories. Especially because there is a new one every week.

They're not a new one, they're the same one. Anything that goes wrong is the fault of Halliburton. Any money made by Halliburton or KBR is tainted, illegal, immoral, ill gotten, paid for by the blood of Americans that died on 9/11 and the illegal war in Iraq. We get it.... no one likes Halliburton. Do they have stores you go to? Do they have products you buy? Are they in your bathroom, kitchen, house, yard, car or workplace?

Nope.

All anyone can bitch about is Halliburton like an evil right wing bogeyman. All evil can be laid at its feet. We get it. Unfortunately due to the complexities of the global marketplace and numerous subsidiaries wholly or partly owned by parent companies many American companies undobtedly do businesses indirectly with terrorist states and unpalatable governments.

Even if it's not directly what if it's second hand through middle men? What about the global grey and black marketplaces? You mean.... GASP..... THEY EXIST?!?!? I get sick of these conspiracy stories when I could come up with the same line of BS about GE, Boeing, IBM, Microsoft or any multi-billion dollar company. Do you think terrorists use laptops running LINUX????

Grow the hell up and let Oliver Stone and Michael Moore handle the conspiracies. At least they can make a living with their versions.

EDIT: Way to blow things out of proportion though on the Whitewater "billions" LOL, that's a laugh. Final tab $70 million. USA Today/AP article on final finacial Whitewater investigation costs. Anything to make it look like the other side is worse huh?

"Criminal violations for corporations in violation of the sanctions can range up to $500,000, with penalties for individuals of up to $250,000 and 10 years in jail."

But Howard Stern can be fined 1.5 Mil each time Michael Powell gets offended by something he says. Yeah that makes sense

Woah! That's a response! I was having difficulty accessing the site, so it took me a while to post a reply. I am going to ignore the "Grow the hell up" comment.

First thing is first: Halliburton is one of the few (as in three) companies in the world that can actually do what they do. One of the others is a French company, so there was no chance that they would get any contract in Iraq. The other is (I believe) a multinational corporation based in the Netherlands. In my opinion, Halliburton deserved to get the contract(s) that they got in Iraq.

That being said:
-1- Should have they been awarded the contracts by default without any bidding, or other companies being considered? I say no. Even if it was a formality.

-2- Should any accusations of accounting misdeeds be investigated by our government? Yes.

-3- Should accusations of working with a member of the “Axis of Evil,” be investigated by our government? Definitely.

In my opinion, these are extremely valid questions that need to be answered, and cannot be dismissed as a simple “conspiracy theory."

EDIT: Added a quote at the end, and the bit about "grow the hell up."

Damn. You caught me on my gross over statement. I do have to admit that my tongue was planted firmly in my cheek when I typed the "Billions" statement. However the estimate was WAY off. Much like the Bush administration’s estimate for the Medicare Reform Bill (prescription drug plan) and the cost of the war in Iraq.

You will get absolutely no disagreement from me on those issues. First, the drug plan should have never been enacted during a time of war, a recessionary economy or most importantly AT ALL. Why are we in the business of giving stuff away because people turn a certain age? Any entitlement turns out to cost 3-5 times the initial estimates and the beneficiaries never think its enough and demand the government sow give them MORE MORE MORE.

On the Iraq costs? I'm still waiting for oil production to offeset the costs of occupation and the war itself. Not that I ever believed that one was going to happen.

Bush is absolutely horrible as a fiscal conservative. You can't increase domestic spending the way he has in any economic climate, recessionary or otherwise. As a big believer in supply side economics though I want to firmly state one thing loudly and for the record. He is no supply sider. His fiscal policy is a complete mess.

About the only thing I can hope for to salvage this President's place in history from an economic standpoint is to allow younger workers to opt out or privatize part of their social security witholding. Other than that.... I won't even try to defend this president on those issues.

BTW, Steve Forbes was my guy. He didn't stand a prayer but the flat tax is brilliant.

Watergate was the scandal that brought down the Nixon Presidency. Several Republican backed "operatives" were caught breaking into the Democratic National Headquarters in an attempt to, presumably, uncover damaging information. Read "All the President's Men" for a detailed, factual account.

Whitewater was the scandal that alleged that the Clintons illegally participated in a cash for land deal. The scope of the investigation was eventually widened to encompass Paula Jones, and via testimony Monica Lewinsky. While there is plenty of books on the investigation, I have no idea which to recommend. They all seem to be quite biased in one extreme or the other.

Good response. I wont go into specifics but we obviously disagree on some things. I just wanted to say that I appreciate the well thought out response.

I was never into Forbes... I met the guy a couple of times, and really didn't care for him personally. But (like a lot of people), I like McCain. Anyone who spent years of thier life hanging by their thumbs has my respect, and is (IMO) more than qualified to be President.
