A Left 4 Dead late adopter.

So, about a month ago I decided to actually purchase Left 4 Dead during a fairly insane deal Steam had at the time. And let me just say that I'm kicking myself in the ass for not having done so earlier.

This is not a review of the game; there's been plenty of that, written by more knowledgeable authors. This is, whoever, my impressions of playing the game mere weeks before its "successor" is supposed to hit the shelves.

My first week or so, I was playing nothing but the Single Player. It was pretty fun, and it allowed me to get to know the maps, the pacing, and general feel of the game. I liked what I played, and having a level of confidence, decided to brave the wilds of online pc gaming.

My first match was a Versus type, on Dead Air. The first thing I said to the mic when the match began as infected was: "This is my first time playing versus..." and before I could ask pointers on playing Hunter, A kickvote against me started. Great, I thought, they're kicking the n00b out of the team". Surprise surprise, the I didn't get kicked off, and the player that started it rage-quitted. A few moments later, one of the guys in my team started to give my pointers on how to play the infected, pointing out how to best spawn with the others, and setting up proper ambushes.

When I fucked up, he would point out the mistakes I made, and just told me to do better. When it was time to play survivor, my entire team was giving me pointers on the difference between SP and Versus strats, and told me the ins and outs of Dead Air.

My Second match was a Survivor. Again, I decided to say that I'm new to Survivor, and really didn't know what I was doing. Like last time, I was told to Fuck off and noob somewhere else, and just like last time, someone in the team helped me out with learning the ropes of the game. He was even nice enough to show some really helpful hints and trips that gave me my first gold medal.

I've been playing a few matches here and there, from campaign to the Helm's Deep Survivor mapmod. Yeah, there were a handful of douches that really got on my nerves, but more often than not, there were still a lot of helpful veterans willing to help a newb out in the fly.

This is the reason why I prefer playing on the PC when I play Valve games. I really don't want to make some over-generalization, but more often than not, most PC players are really willing to help out those new to the games. I'm tempted to borrow a copy of L4D for the 360, just to compare the general attitudes between the 2 platforms. Maybe what helped me out was the fact that, having L4D2 around the corner, that the majority of the Elitist, votekicking players moved to newer, richer grounds, and that's what saved me the most grief.

In any case, I'm happy with my late purchase. Makes me really want to buy Borderlands through Steam, and group up with some of the people here. What do you guys think?

Wow, you had one of those rare positive L4D PUG experiences. One in a million
Thanks for posting your receipt, I was about to call bullshit on your late purchase.
I just got it about a month ago. I've had about the same experience but I played singleplayer more before jumping into multiplayer. I've seen some helpful peopple and gotten some jerkwads too, its to be expected i any game you play online.
