The Aging Gamer (Guacamelee - I'm Done)

2D Platformers are one of my favorite all-time genres. So the amount of arm twisting it took to purchase Guacamelee was negligible. I think I read about 4 tweets from a few video game journalists who convinced me to buy this game.

I purchased the game last week when I was on vacation with my wife, 2 children and my inlaws. For the record, traveling with a 1 1/2 Year Old is more stressful than going to work, so this was hardly a vacation.

I can't really give you an idea of how much time I have put into this game since I literally have played it in 2 minute bites. But if I had to guess I would say somewhere around 2 hours. At a certain point (Potential Spoiler) you fight a woman who splits into two people. It was after this part of the game that I found it to be a frustrating endeavor. Prior to this, Guacamelee was a fun, relatively simple game, but it quickly became too much. The platforming is now a pain in the ass, and the fighting sequences make me want to throw my vita (I haven't thrown a controller since I was about 13 years old).

I am now at a point in my life where I have the thought "yes i could do this, but I really don't want to ." My desire to push through is non-existent. My backlog of a bazzilion games doesn't help either. . . I'll just play one of those instead.

Interesting - I'm also an extremely limited time gamer (I'll usually play the Vita for a bit on the sofa before bed while watching TV with the wife) and I'll also generally pass on things that are notoriously difficult / require intense amounts of replaying, but I actually found the challenge in Guacamelee totally enjoyable.

It was fairly forgiving in save points and had platforming that was clever - took me a few hours to get the hang of what they were trying to do with the combat but by the time all was said and done I was able to clear Hard mode in about 4 hours.

Maybe I'm just on a kick lately though - I've been trying to clear Vanquish challenge 6 for like 2 months once / day before work (still failing) and am gearing up for another run at Demon's Souls so I think I have more zen patience than I used to.
I just got it today, more than halfway done with it to 100%, combos matter and obviously throws but if things get hard you can take just 15-20 min to farm some coins and buy yourself a good amount of heart pieces. I don't know how you play but ground dodge is your best friend because they allow you to cancel many attacks to easily continue combos (shown at the gym). Instead of just a standard 1-2-Up 3, 1-2-3 Circle-Up 1-2- Circle Down 3 (or grab) you can actually cancel the second or third ground hit and roll forward for a mini loop that leads into grab. I hope you end up finishing it but as long as you had some fun with it that's good. I haven't tried co-op.
