Demo Party: I Suck at Shooters edition

Posted by Donburiboy, 12 December 2010 · 151 views

I have never been good at first-person shooters. Ever since the halcyon days of Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64, I was the poor fucker karate-chopping the corner while my friends killed me, then quickly ran to where I would re-spawn, and kill me again.

But I've often felt that I have been missing out on some vital gaming experiences by not playing any FPS, so I've decided to download all the shooting demos I can to see if there is a game that speaks to me.

Here are my quick thoughts on my quick deaths:

Killzone 2:
I don't know the backstory, but my squad and I started off attacking a beach, and I did fine, following the simple tutorial instructions. Things went bad when it was just me and another guy entering a building full of enemy soldiers. Couldn't find cover fast enough. Couldn't switch from close-quarters combat to shooting combat fast enough. Got shot.

The Darkness
What an ugly fucking game. I did like the idea that there were two guns. The whole opening scene in the car was useless as an instructional demo, and I wasn't paying attention to anything that was being said. I'm not familiar with the comics, so I can't tell how accurate to the source material it is. Got shot up in a cemetery. Convenient.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
This one I actually got the handle of, though it didn't stop me from getting my ass lit up like a Christmas tree. This game has some good, cheesy character to it. I might actually pick it up. I also played the demo of the second game.

So does anyone have any recommendations for a good FPS for someone with lousy hand/eye coordination like me?

The Call of Duty games on easy are really forgiving. Also if you can't do First Person Shooters very well, maybe give a 3rd person shooter like Gears of War a shot.

Edit:

Just noticed 2 of the 3 games are Playstation exclusives, I'm guessing you only have a PS3 so forget about the Gears of War one. Also maybe some Zombie mode on World at War or Black Ops with a few friends would be a good start at a FPS.
Since when is Uncharted an FPS? I thought for sure it was third person.

Anyway, I dont play FPS games much, but I find the DICE shooters to be decently fun. I love Battlefield 1943 and my (extremely limited) time with Bad Company 2 was enjoyable as well. In contrast, I didnt care too much for Modern Warfare 2. I only played story not multiplayer on that one but was decidedly 'meh' for me. But it was cool to kill someone with a riot shield to the dome.

But even if you dont find a shooter that you like, so what? There are a ton of great games that arent FPS so there is no need to feel like you are 'missing out' on anything. (I try to remind myself of this all the time.)

Oh one other thing, it's first person, but a stretch to call it a 'shooter'. However, it's one of the best games of this generation. Of course I'm speaking of Portal. When you add that if you buy The Orange Box you get other shooters to try with it, there's no reason not to try it out.
let me say this. FPS are a lot more tolerable when you're doing single player. all my friends headshot me in Halo and it's annoying but I was a long time fan of bungie since Pathways to Darkness so I was the first to tell them about Halo. and while I was doing the single player. I had fun.

How are you for single player suggestions?

Also I like Co-Op. That's what I'm a huge CTF fan but Co-Op of any sort if much more fun b/c you aren't getting outclassed. Let me recommend Resistance 2. The Co-Op in that is pretty fun. Red Faction is alright. Very sandboxy but fun. Fallout 3 is technically FPS but definitely more RPGy. That's about all i have in my played column. I hav 50 Cent sealed and I hear that's tons of fun. Dark Sector is so cheap it can't be THAT bad right? I got Bioshock waiting as well.
If you're not into shooters that much or too good at them but still have an interest to play something that is good, the Orange Box is the only way to go. And you have to get it on Steam. FPS controls on consoles are hardly tolerable once you play an FPS on PC. And there isn't anything like Half-Life 2 and Portal.
Regarding Uncharted. Even though they aren't FPS games, they are amazing games that deserve to be played by all gamers. Plus, they are extremely easy on the easy difficulty.

Regarding an FPS, try playing Battlefield Bad Company 1 or 2. It is a much more open game than Call of Duty and you can take it at a much slower pace. Call of Duty is very fast paced and has a lot of shooting fish in a barrel endless enemy respawn parts which I could see being extremely frustrating for somebody in your shoes.
I get nervous when I play shooters online but I've got to recommend Bioshock 1 and 2. Its pretty easy and slow paced for starters. I'd also recommend 3rd person shooters, they will help you get comfy by letting you see around you so you can know at least somewhat what the hell is going on.

You will be missing some great games though by skipping out, just take your time they won't disappear.
Thanks for the feedback/suggestions, and I apologize for playing fast and loose with the 1st/3rd person thing. I do know the difference. :p

I have a PS3 and a Wii. And a DS. But from what I can tell, the Wii leans more towards old-school platformers and retro gaming.

I scored a cheap copy of BioShock 2 and enjoyed the Uncharted demos enough that I'll probably grab them at some point.

I'm also a big Transformers fan so I might try War for Cybertron.
dude get House of the Dead Overkill on the Wii. It's insanely cheap, it's a pretty short lightgun game but it's SO much fun and it's hilarious. and it makes for an awesome party game. I think i got it for $14-19 and it was worth every penny and more.
