[UPDATE] Predictions for the PlayStation Event Tonight

Posted by tylerh1701, 20 February 2013 · 140 views

UPDATED WITH RESULTS. NEW CONTENT IN BLUE.

Just thought I'd post a few of my predictions and see what others thought. I haven't really been following many of the rumors besides the supposed controllers and the streaming stuff.

I think the easiest prediction to make is that everything won't be revealed tonight. Lots of video game outlets are building this up to the point where we'll find out everything tonight, but I don't ever remember a first reveal of a new console showing off everything about the console. More than likely we'll all have more questions than answers after Sony's presentation is over. As for specific predictions:

Will the PS4 be revealed? Yes. I definitely think we'll get our first look at the PS4 console and controller tonight.

Easy prediction that I didn't even get 100% right. The PS4 console never made an appearance.

Will we get a look at a lot of new PS4 games? No. I think we'll get a few nice tech previews, but I don't imagine we'll get a ton of new info about games coming to PS4 right away.

I think I nailed this. We got a few new games and a few tech demoes, but there wasn't a super long list of upcoming PS4 games.

Will we find out more about PlayStation Cloud and streaming? Yes. I personally think this may be a main focal point of the presentation. I'm not personally sold on video game streaming yet, but it definitely has potential. I think PS+ and the new streaming service will somehow combine on the PS4.

They mentioned PlayStation Cloud, but didn't go into quite as much depth as I expected.

Will PS4 have backwards compatibility? Unknown. My personal prediction is no, but I don't think that information will be revealed tonight.

I'd say I nailed this prediction too. We got a fairly firm "no" in regards to confirmation of backwards compatibility, but it still kinda-sorta exists via streaming. Also, no word if current PSN games will be playable on the PS4.

Will we find out about the internal specs of the PS4? No. I think they'll demo some of the things the PS4 can do, but I don't think we'll find out anything about the internal specs.

Bricked this one. There was way more spec talk then I expected. WAY MORE.

Will we get an in-depth preview of the PS4 controller? Yes. I think this presentation will definitely show off the new features of the controller.

We got a glimpse of the controller, but not as much of a demo as I expected.

Will the Vita be included tonight? Yes. I think (and really hope) that Sony has some brand new Vita games to show off, and I think they'll also announce a $50 price drop.

Pretty much missed this, Vita was mentioned early and it's integration with the PS4 seems to be in the cards, but we didn't hear much about the Vita after that.

Will the Vita be interactive with the PS4? I don't know. I really want the Vita and PS4 to work hand-in-hand to the point where you'll need to own both for the best PS4 experience. I would really like to see Sony put more of a focus of making most (if not all) downloadable games also available for the Vita. I'd also REALLY like to see Remote Play enabled on way more games than it is right now. Are these pipe-dreams of a Vita fan who is scared of the handheld not succeeding? Maybe. :)

If Remote Play is in face enabled for all (or almost all) games, that would be amazing. It seems like that is the plan at this point, but I'll wait to see it before I believe it.

I might add more...but now I'm going to lunch.

UPDATE: And I'm back with a few more thoughts that crossed my mind.

Will there be a stupid-ass touch screen on the controller like gettinmoney thinks there will? Yes. I'm not as down on a touch screen in the middle of the controller as gettinmoney is, I think it will probably function similarly to how the Vita touchscreen aspects function, with mixed results.

Easy prediction, but I got it right.

Will the price be announced tonight? No. I really don't think Sony is going to tip their cards and announce their pricing already. I think recent rumors for $400-$550 are probably pretty accurate.

Nailed it.

Will there be multiple models available at launch? Probably. But I don't particularly care for the multi-model strategy. The more expensive model is almost always the best value, but it's still the most expensive model. I'd prefer them to bulid everything they can into one SKU and charge one price for it.

Unknown, no mention of this.

If I have any more thoughts I'd like to mention, I'll probably just update this post or just post them in the comments. I do know I'm excited for tonight and I'm gonna head home a little bit early to make sure I can watch it in the comfort of my own home.

I'd like to see some Vita love if only to shut up its haters.

I really hope they don't drastically change the controller. I love the DualShock. I also hope there's no stupid ass touchscreen but there probably will be.

The PS3 is going to be my last serious gaming console though. I'll probably buy a PS4 after a price drop or two, but I'll only be playing a select few games on it (amazing games or continuations of my favorite franchises). I'm not going to get nearly as many games as I did for my PS3.
^As a piece of hardware, it's been iterated several times that the Vita is great. I can understand some of the hate on the Vita, but as someone who enjoys a variety of genres, I know that I'm still extremely happy with my Vita. I've only had it for 3 months and already have a backlog. I can easily list 30 games I've played or want to play on the Vita.

I think I'll still be a serious gamer in the next generation of consoles, but no way I'm buying at launch. I have way too much catching up to do in this generation, and I think buying a console anywhere near launch is a very poor decision financially.
Sounds about right to me. If history is any indicator, the presentation will be awful and will put the internets in a hilarious fervor. I'll be watching though.

I'm pro touchscreen on the controller. I have a good feeling about it - one of my new favorite things on the Vita lately is when developers let you use regions of the touch screen (front or back/left or right) as a button (see SFxT or Smarter Than). Nothing like having a 'button' the size of a baby's fist.

Someone mentioned that streaming service thingy being used for PS3 backwards compatibility. I've always felt like Remote Play was a beta test for something else, so it'd be nice if it was in the cards for the Vita to be able to enjoy that same streaming tech. I'll root for that.

Sony has definitely earned my loyalty over the past year or two so I'm interested in whatever is coming out of it. I have $400 in bby flip monies on a pitch-in card waiting for the pre-orders to appear - outside of the Vita I've never purchased a console in the first year of release.
I think the internet will be in a hilarious fervor no matter what. Too many impatient, uninformed, and entitled people will do that. Sony has been the whipping boy for a while (especially the Vita) so I expect the hate to really spew after the presentation tonight, no matter how good or bad it is.

That being said, I hope it's good and I hope this specific presentation is specifically directed at Western audiences. (Not trying to sound offensive there, but what Japan is looking for in video games and what the USA is looking for seem to be night and day).

I'm really on the Sony side when compared to what Microsoft is doing. They're owning it on the digital front and doing a better job focusing on exclusives. I have absolutely no idea why the 360 outsales the PS3 every month in the US.
I would LOVE a price announcement and release date so preorders could open. Doubt it though.
Well I bricked the shit out of my specs prediction.
Okay, after seeing the controller, I'm okay with that.
Now that that's over time to shut off the internet for a few days! For a two hour conference I sure do feel like I didn't learn much. I think there's going to be a lot of hating on the Share button, but honestly I think it's a damn fun idea.

Watch_Dogs is shit hot if they pull it off. I have no idea what Destiny is still. E3 oughta be fun this year.
^I only unplugged for about an hour or so, but yeah, after the show I got off the net and ate pizza. It's definitely good to let the internet mull and let the good content/ideas float to the top, and read about them in a little while.

@gettinmoney - Yeah, I was pretty sure the leaked prototype controllers were pretty close to the real thing, so I figured they'd be OK. The touch screen center may provide useful and definitely won't be prohibitive in any way.
