A Curated Selection

Posted by g.k, 13 February 2017 · 3206 views

Months back, I started listening to a couple radio shows, after a few years' hiatus during which I was pretty miffed about the state of my favorite genre. I was very pleasantly surprised by what I heard, but it got me thinking about the disappointment I had come to expect.

I was then inspired to pen a sour little diatribe about the havoc I believed commercialization had wrought on the trance scene.

It was hard to contain the bitterness. Instead of sharing that negativity, I thought it might be nice to list some of my favorite tracks, circa 2007-2011, a time when some really good stuff was being put out.

So here they are, in no particular order. Maybe you will find the same joy that I have had from one of these songs.

Signalrunners - Meet Me In Montauk
Lovely, unique, and somber.

BT feat. JES - Every Other Way (Armin van Buuren Remix)
JES is the all-time greatest trance songstress.

Ronski Speed - Love All The Pain Away (Kyau & Albert Remix)
This sounds so ahead of its time. It's inconceivable that it's 10 years old.

Mr Sam. feat. Claud9 - Cygnes
The drums and bass on this are so groovy.

Leona Lewis - I See You (Cosmic Gate Remix)
One of the best big synth melodies from Germany's finest duo.

Markus Schulz feat. Jennifer Rene - Not The Same
This ASOT 458 version, featuring an intro mashed up with another Markus Schulz song, is the go-to. It fits so perfectly, it sounds somehow naked without it.

Armin van Buuren feat. Laura V - Drowning (Avicii Remix)
This really hits that strange and beautiful tone that is somehow both sad and uplifting.

DJ Eco - And We Flew Away
A big build-up and powerful release.

BT feat. JES - The Light In Things (tyDi Remix)
Another synthy delight. JES never disappoints.

Sander van Doorn - Renegade
The Trance Energy 2010 anthem. It's a shame the festival isn't around anymore.

Ferry Corsten - Beautiful
Many of the songs on this list are remixes, but this Ferry Corsten original needs no tweaking.

Onova - Platitude (Flash Brothers Remix)
In my mind, one of the most underrated songs on this list. Masterful layering and rich sound. I only ever heard it in a single set. It wasn't even on YouTube, I had to upload it!

Avicii vs. Nicky Romero - I Could Be the One
OK, so this is progressive/electro house, but I love the melody.
