Does Netflix hate anime?

Posted by Slappybob, 15 April 2011 · 807 views

I have been a loyal member of Netflix for over 3 years now and I have to wonder if they hate the Anime Genre. More then half the series in my queue are pointless to try to get because one or two of the disc in it are unavailable. And these are not old out of print series either. Some are new and all are available to purchase online and in stores. So I can not see any reason for Netflix not to stock up on a genre that has i would guess millions of fans. Now i have no proof on the number it might just be in the hundreds of thousands, but even then there is enough there to build a market on.

Now they do have some series in the instant queue, but those are english dubs only and myself i prefer japanese with english subtitles. Sorry but Viz killed me with their awful dubbing.

Here is a list of series i want to watch but am unable to:
Elfen Lied
Magic Users Club
Original Dirty Pair
Patlabor
Gall Force
Please Teacher!
Otogi Zoshi
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Battle Skipper
Fushyugi Yuugi: Eikoden
The Slayers: Revolution (available on instant but not disc)

This is just a few series but I am sure there are more out there. Someway Netflix needs to know that there is a market out there for anime fans and that they could get more subscribers if they would just reach out and offer us more selection and availability.

Thank you

Screw Netflix, I have THE INTERNET!
Its a popularity thing. I watch a little bit of Anime myself, not as much as you, but more than the general public. I have only heard of one of those anime's on your list (Full Metal Alchemist).

Look at it from their position. If a person who casually watches anime has no interest in these, why would the general public?

I am not attacking your anime, or think you do not have merit in your position. I am just saying it's not all that popular, which is too bad.

As far as the original Japanese with English subs, I do not like the original Japanese myself. Again I think its a popularity thing. Not attacking what you enjoy, just saying I believe you are in the minority. Being upset with Netflix is kind of silly.
I don't mind them not stocking the selections i have listed at all their hubs, it just upsets me that these series are only partially available. Who wants to watch 3 out of 4 of the disc in a series. Either have all the disc available or just remove the series from being available.
Simple supply and demand.
not huge anime fan, but I do perfer the dubbed version on instant view. not a fan of subtitles
They have all of FMA: Brotherhood, that's how I watched it.
My buddy has a column where he answers questions just like this with a smidgen of industry insight. Give him a try.
Nice to read that more FMA Brotherhood is coming to instant, only first 2 parts are up at the moment and the cliffhanger is killing me softly.
abhinav that link only mentions them bringing FMA Brotherhood to Netflix which is what they have done. The actual airing on Adult Swim is only on episode 40 or so and I do not think they have released the next set of DVDs that are much past that point. I am sure once the last set of DVDs comes out then you would hope they would put the whole series up but it will be a while as there are 65 episodes this time around. So I would not expect to see it til Christmas if Adult Swim keeps on schedule and do not repeat this set of dubbed episodes again while waiting for the last set to be dubbed.
Have you heard of CrunchyRoll? They simulcast a lot of the newest releases so I hardly download fan-subs now.

They're a legit site with LOTS of anime that you can stream to your TV if you have a CrunchyRoll compatible device (like a Roku box -- No PS3 unfortunately.)
They have added a lot of anime to their instant streaming, and I have been pretty happy with that. I think the demand for anime is low, and it costs more for them to provide discs then other movies. Looking at the list of anime you are interested in, there are a lot of older titles. The reason they probably do not have the whole series is the copies they have got damaged either in the mail or by customers. Being older, it is probably more difficult to get replacements, or they figure it is not worth the cost.
I have a suggestion that I have not tried yet, but I have been tempted to give a shot. It is like netflix but is specifically for anime. It is called www.rentanime.com and they seem to have a good selection of old and new titles. If anyone else has tried it, maybe the could comment on the service.
