Product Description
As Vincent, a man recently succumbed to the irresistible beauty of the game's titular diversion, players find themselves swept into a treacherous love triangle. Catherine's core themes-those of free will, of the delicate nature of relationships and the choices we make within them, marry perfectly with the intense, terror-filled gameplay that serves to accurately reflect Vincent's growing sense of anxiety. It is an experience wholly unlike any to come before it, and is certain to leave gamers talking and thinking about Vincent's tribulations long after the credits have rolled.

No complaints though. It's really cool that this game has 8 different outcomes and the questions Vincent (the playable character) gets before going into each stage really get me thinking about myself. This game is DEEP. I never felt myself caring so much about the characters in a video game before. I really want the best for Vincent, but I think I'm just as confused as he is. I don't even know what C/Katherine to go with, and I'm more than halfway through the game. And I think I get just as flipped out as him in the boss battles at the end of each stage. This game really messes with you, and will get your heart beating. Don't think because this is mainly a puzzle game, it won't be scary. The atmosphere of Vincent's nightmares will create more anxiety for the pretty darn hard puzzles you'll have to solve and is intensified by some creepy looking monsters.
But at least after having your pulse rate skyrocket, you and Vincent can have some R&R at the Stray Sheep (a bar) and get some interesting trivia about alcohol. Trust me, you'll treasure this time at the bar after crying and cursing your whole way through a nightmare.
I rate 5 stars for Catherine across the board. Easy to learn controls, outstanding voice acting for a translation, super challenging (but adjustable to everyone), gripping story, a lot of replayability, and not to mention the beautiful (but terrifying graphincs).
***UPDATE***
Just finished the game for the first time and got one ending. Now I started going through the Golden Playhouse (the storyline) again to unlock another ending and switch out my bronze trophies for gold (which also allows you to skip ahead for future endings). After the first time, this game becomes a lot easier because you'll know about all the different techniques ahead of time, and makes you consider changing to a harder difficulty. Oh, and the questions you get in between stages change as well.
And for you true masochists, once you start collecting gold trophies on either normal or hard, you unlock new stages in Babel, which is even more challenging than the Golden Playhouse. It's the Tournament portion of the game where you're timed while climing up to the goal, and your record is compared to other players around the world. But the hardest thing is that 'undo' is no longer and option. But from what I've heard, completing the four stages in Babel unlock a ninth ending.
The objective of each level is to climb a massive tower, by maneuvering blocks to create steps. The tower is divided up by 9 floors, Vincent must clear a floor safely in order to clear the stage and escape the nightmare for that night. But the thing is, if Vincent dies in his nightmare, he dies in real life as well. All this is only further complicated by the fact that each stage has a certain amount of levels that ends with a terrifying boss. These bosses take the form of Vincent's fears.
Catherine is not an easy game, with things becoming more challenging in the later levels when various effect blocks are thrown into the mix. But don't let that scare you away. On the easy setting, Catherine at times can be a frustrating experience, but I never had to use more than 5 retry's on a level. The game also features an undo function on easy, allowing you to undo your last move up to 9 times. I imagine the normal and hard modes could prove to be unbearably challenging, because I often was forced to use the undo feature. Even with the frustration, solving the puzzles in Catherine has proved to be some of the most rewarding experiences I've had in a long time.
Catherine's story throws topics at you that most games try to avoid; marriage, infidelity, death, life, maturity, and forces you to make decisions based on your real world beliefs. These decisions help shape the outcome of the game. A lot of the content in Catherine may prove to be a bit overwhelming for some gamers though, and as such, only people mature enough to handle this content should even consider buying Catherine.
Catherine is a breathe of fresh air in the stagnant wind of gaming. It does everything you could ever want it to, in a way you never expected it to, making it one of the best games I've played in a long time. While its themes and content may not suite a lot of gamers, I would recommend it to everyone. Every once in a while you play a game unlike anything you've ever experienced before, Catherine is that kind of game.
Top reviews from other countries
The story in Catherine is excellent, covering themes of commitment, infidelity and growing up with such skill that it is impossible not to relate to the protagonist and the other characters in their struggles. One playthrough of the game will take around 12 hours but there are 9 different endings depending on the choices the player makes, giving high replayability. The voice acting and presentation are also top-notch as to be expected from the Persona team. Don't miss out on Catherine.
