An space-based action RPG like its predecessor, gameplay in Mass Effect 2 revolves around the player's particular version of Commander Shepard and continuing development of this character as the game proceeds. As the game opens a variety of character classes are made available to the player, with talents, both exclusive and general, associated with each. With experience these talents are leveled up, resulting in the unlocking of related abilities and/or entirely new talents. The player has the ability to customize their Commander Shepard in a number of ways including physical appearance, gender, and certain aspects of their personal history, with the rub being that these choices can influence things like available missions, dialogue choices with non-player characters (NPCs), and character background.
Accompanying this main character are a number of preset supporting characters that the player can direct and develop relationships with, which again, will alter the outcome of the story. All the characters from the original game make an appearance in Mass Effect 2, but the immediate characters surrounding Commander Shepard are new. Additional new features that players can expect to experience include new alien races; a more realistic damage system; a new heavy weapons system allowing for maximum damage; a regenerative health system; a dramatic increase in the number of character animations available to Shepard; and updates to the dialogue mechanic used when conversing with NPCs.
Integration with the Original Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2 allows players of the original Mass Effect game to import save games to continue the story of their own Commander Shepard. In doing this, the decisions that were made in the first game will affect the events of the second game. In addition, characters from the first game will return, as long as they were not killed off by the player in the first game. On the other hand, new players coming to the series for the first time in Mass Effect 2 will start a brand-new character, discover the events of the previous games as they progress and embark on a thrilling stand-alone adventure that does not require the previous game for play.

I think the strongest draw of the Mass Effect games are how cinematic they feel. During this game, it feels more like watching a sci-fi epic rather than playing a game. The characters and environments draw you in, especially if you've played the first game and are already familiar with most of the background and returning characters.
It's also a lot more fluid than the first game, both in terms of conversation, gameplay, and the cinematic cutscenes. During conversations, characters (including your own) will move around a lot more and seem more realistic in how they move and gesture. This enhances both the dramatic moments and the humorous moments. Facial animations are also a lot more animated as well, able to convey more emotion than before. There's also a new interrupt feature, that lets you take a paragon or renegade action to end the conversation early.
The game is a lot more 'gray' than the first one. It's really hard to tell what's the right decision and what the wrong decision is. Speculation is running rampant on what kind of effect decisions will have on the final game in the trilogy, but due to the nature of choices you make and the subjective viewpoint, it's really hard to do. All I know is that even though I played through as a Paragon, it was almost impossible to avoid doing some of the Renegade interrupt options, so I have to give credit to Bioware, which is usually known for having only blatant good and evil choices.
Controls and Combat:
It took me awhile to get used to the gameplay in the second game, but that might be because I was playing the first one before it arrived so I would be refreshed on what happened. The controls, at least for the PC version, have been shifted around. E is no longer the 'use/action' button, it's been changed to space. The pause button is no longer space, it's the left shift. It took me a few hours to finally get used to the new system (and ironically, this makes going back to the first game hard).
The combat style also takes awhile to get used to. You have to rely on cover a lot more than before, which I learned the hard way. There's also a new ammo system in place. I don't really care for the ammo system, but opinions seem to vary with people on how effective it is. It seems like an unnecessary regression from the first game, but that's an issue of personal taste.
Story:
The overall story is probably what I like most about the Mass Effect universe. However, for as strong as this game is, I did have some problems when comparing it to the first game.
First, the plot isn't as straightforward as the first game - that's both a good and bad thing. It's good because it keeps you on your toes in the sense that you don't know what's going to happen next. There's no real set order in how you have to do things - you are forced into certain missions at some points, but the bulk of the game is spent wandering around and doing missions in whatever order you feel like doing them. It's nice to have such freedom in a game, but at the same time, it weakens the story slightly by making it feel less focused. You don't really have much contact with the main villains of the game until the latter part. You also lack a direct nemesis plaguing you throughout the game. In the first game, it was much more focused - you had Saren, a rogue Specter with an army of geth that you had to track and stop. In this game, your enemies vary greatly and you don't have that personal nemesis that you track through the galaxy.
Like I said, it's not a bad thing, and that's for a specific reason - the strength of the characters and their personal side missions.
Really, the strength of this game lies in your quest to find allies in the galaxy. They are a diverse, interesting bunch. Everyone is going to have their own favorite, but they all have a diverse background and an interesting side quest that fleshes out their personality and the world around them. It felt that the bulk of the game was really about gathering the team to make sure you're ready to take on the final mission, and the strength of the characters you gather and their interesting dialogue makes up for the lack of focus in the overall plot. If you take the time to get to know the people you recruit to your team, it'll make the ending of the game that much more heartbreaking or triumphant, depending on how well you do.
Overall:
This game is a lot of fun. It's superior to the first game in almost every regard (though I do like the overall plot in the first game better). It's a worthy sequel, and the ending of the game has me REALLY looking forward to Mass Effect 3! Here's to hoping that we have it sooner rather than later!
PROS
1. Engaging Story. The story continues where Mass Effect 1 left off. It may not feel as epic as the first one, but playing through your teammates' stories creates more depth and connection. Also, don't worry if you didn't play the first one, as the game does a nice job of catching you up with what happened before.
2. Awesome graphics and voice acting. At certain times, it's feels like I'm watching a really good Sci-Fi movie. It utilizes the Phys-X engine, so Nvidia is the better card to run this game on. However, the game runs great on my ATI card.
3. Streamlined game mechanics. Control is more intuitive than the first game, while commands and powers are easily executed. Teammates are more useful too, but tend to stay behind you and let you do the dirty work (which is not a bad thing I guess).
4. Six different classes. The default class is soldier. It emphasizes weapons as your main strength. The most difficult to play is Vanguard, which emphasizes close quarters combat (melee and shotgun). But it also offers the most fun as you barrel into enemies with Biotic Charge. I'll let you discover the rest of the classes for yourself.
5. Dialogue Interrupts and Skips. Conversations are more dynamic by giving you the option to interject with a heroic or villainous action and/or dialogue. Also, you can skip dialogues and scenes with the spacebar, minimizing replay annoyances.
6. Heavy Weapons. The M-920 Cain=Armageddon. Enough said.
7. 10 teammates! 11 if you buy the game new. 12 if you purchase the Kasumi DLC.
CONS
1. Cerberus Network. EA's solution to the booming resale market is to devalue an used game by locking certain content to initial game purchasers. This means if you buy this game used, you will not have access to Zaeed, the Arc Projector heavy weapon, Firewalker missions, a crash site, Inter-Stellar news feeds, and a Cerberus armor and weapon. However, you can purchase the above contents as a DLC.
2. DLC economy. I don't mind paying for quality work, but the fact that I have to convert my US dollars to specific amounts of BioWare (BW) points is ridiculous. It's another ingenious idea concocted by Microsoft to maximize profits.
3. Level cap at 30. I really wanted to max out all my skills, but it's impossible with the level cap. I understand the developers did this in order to balance the game play, but sometimes I just want to kick butt!
The following list of DLC is ranked, 1 being the best and 11 being the weakest.
1. Lair of the Shadow Broker. Additional missions with unique game play and environments. You get to have Liara as a teammate as she tracks down her arch nemesis. At the end of it, you get multiple rewards, like resources and the ability to change teammates' skill distribution points.
2. Firepower Pack. Obtain three additional weapons. My favorite is the Geth Plasma Shotgun. It's an amazing weapon that has very good range and damage. Also, you can charge it up to shoot 2 rounds at once!
3. Overlord. Additional missions with unique environments and a story that leaves a haunting image in the end.
4. Kasumi - Stolen Memory. Gain an additional member and weapon. She's a good compliment to a Vanguard class Shepard, but otherwise quite useless later in the game. Her weapon, the SMG Locust is a great gun to have early on. She does have an engaging and heart-retching story (it can be quite sappy for some).
5. Blood Dragon Armor Set. It is simply the coolest armor set in the game. Basically, you get to wear medieval style armor in outer space! However, you'll need to buy a new copy of Dragon Age in order to obtain this DLC.
6. Alternate Appearance Pack. Three alternate costumes for three different teammates. My favorite is Garrus'
7. Dr. Pepper Promo Helmets. You can obtain up to 3 different helmets. The recon hood is my favorite. The promo ends in December 30, 2010.
8. Aegis Pack. Gain an additional armor set geared towards melee combat and a sniper rifle that rips through shields.
9. Equalizer Pack. You get two helmets and an armor set. One of the helmets is hideous to look at. While the armor set looks like a red version of the Cerberus assault armor, it does look good on my renegade Shepard.
10. Alternate Appearance Pack 2. Three more alternate costumes. This time, none of the costumes stood out to me.
11. Arrival - The last DLC mission released for this game. It had Shephard solo'ing to rescue a scientist caught in Batarian space. Without giving the ending away, I find the conclusion to be rather unsatisfactory, while the character development to be minimal and rushed. This is one DLC you can skip buying.
*Collector Weapon and Armor. The armor and weapon are wonderfully designed. But the only way to obtain them at the moment is through auction sites. Right now, they're going for about $45!
*Terminus Weapon and Armor. Once again, this can only be obtained through 3rd party reseller or auction sites. It is cheaper than the above DLC by about $10.
Additional Comments:
*I personally did not obtained the Collector or Terminus DLC. That's why I didn't rank them, but I can tell you they look really cool in screen shots!
Also, if you play the game at hardcore difficulty, you'll have the chance to obtain the Geth Pulse rifle!
Top reviews from other countries
The story line is good as well. It follows a logical progression and any deviations from that make sense. There's nothing more frustrating than when you're immersed in the game and the aliens you've been battling suddenly introduce a fire breathing, flying dragon from medieval England. In Mass Effect 2 there is the possibility of developing a romantic relationship with some of the characters. I never knew someone with blue skin and tentacles could look so hot. This is where the game designers have done a superb job. The game is an excellent blend between reading a good book or watching a good video and good role playing. The blurring between game play and story is great, when you're standing before you're crew on a radiation hardened chunk of rock on the far side of the galaxy knowing that none of you may come back it brings a tear to your eyes and a surge of adrenalin and pride to your blood. Yeah, it's that good. Action sequences are good and fit the story line well. I did find I wished for a bit better control over my own weapons and how the NPC characters performed.
Production values in the game overall are great. As the credits role by you see voice overs done by notables such as Martin Sheen, Claudia Black, and Carrie Anne-Moss. I can't say I'm familiar with the engineers, designers, or other team members but the game is pure Hollywood all the way from the standpoint of the level of craftsmanship that's gone into it.
On the down side. Whoever came up with introducing sloppy physics into the mouse control on the circuit bypass doors should be slapped. After a while hopping from planet to planet looking for minerals to build things gets a little tedious. The game crashed a few times, most of which we're recoverable, which on my machine isn't unusual, I run Windows 7 64 bit ultimate. One crash that didn't prevent me from finishing the game I could never work through.
Overall though the game is great and worth the money. Auto game saves are logically placed and you don't find yourself slogging through something that took you an hour to do before. Story and action don't get in the way of each other and move the game's progression on nicely. I got about eighty hours worth of play time out of it and couple of very late nights.
