I'd prefer to rate it just 4.5 stars as sometimes is difficult to tell where to go, but, alas, can't do.
I'll start off by saying that I truly wanted to like this game. I knew nothing about it going in other that its general reception was 'meh'. Well, Spectrobes: Beyond the Portals did just as bad, if not worse with critics, and I freaking love it. So, undeterred by the critical warning, I jumped in. And at first, I was pleasantly surprised. Wario: MoD begins with an interesting, nintendo-y setup, with Wario filled with envy over a reality TV master thief, who wields a magical wand of disguise, the Siver Zephyr. Determined to be the best thief around, Wario hops in to the TV and literally steals the show, taking the Silver Zephyr's wand, Goodstyle, and along with it, his sense of pride. The story is surprisingly prevalent here, and pretty funny. A few times I actually laughed out loud, and almost every joke earned a chuckle. But while the story was unexpectedly charming and engaging, the gameplay... wasn't.
The original Wario games mixed a good dose of mario with a bit of metroidvania-esq exploration. Wario MoD drops the mario. This is, undeniably, a metroidvania adventure game, and not a platformer. All the action takes place on the bottom screen, and centers around using different 'guises' to access new areas and advance, instead of platforming. The guises Wario collects throughout the leingthy 10-12 hour campaign are generally interesting, and pretty diverse, too. Wario can don an artist's garb and paint blocks into the world, or float through the air dressed as a spaceman. While these abilities sound fun, the game never really mixes them or uses them in tandem creatively. And switching between them is very counter intuitive. While the L and R buttons are completley unmapped, the developers felt the need to make you draw ambiguous shapes on the touchscreen in order to use these powers. And some of these (ten) powers even feel thrown in, or forced. In fact, the level design overall feels forced, and in a metroidvania, thats very, very bad. A misleading fetch quest within a confusing, maze like level is never fun. Especially not with these controls. Players use the D-pad to move around, and up is jump. The game is stylus-centric, so the stlyus must always be in your left hand. Its... bad.
This is the first game review Ive ever written, and Im not very good at it. But what I'm trying to say is that Wario: MoD is... average. While it has some good ideas, its gameplay and controls arent too great, and overall is just not a standout DS title. However, its really cheap, so if after reading this you still want to try it, go ahead. You might like it. So, yeah. The end.
the "t.v." concept was a little wishly washy but hey it's all about the
funny. sometimes as gamers we get to caught up in Graphics,Story lines and
Past Genera comparisons. Let's just have stupid fun once and a while.
