Have been using the headset for 2 months
5 Stars
Have been using the headset for 2 months
The Pulse is a great all-around gaming headset. Listening to music is an awesome experience as well. I have been using this headset for just about 2 months now and have had ZERO problems with it. The quality is awesome; no scratches on the metal or glossy plastic parts either! The comfort is great for me, and uniquely designed. The inside cushions for the speakers indent deeper towards the back of the ear. There are two cushions on the top of the headset to make up for the slight top heaviness, which I assume is caused by the speaker size. Even so, I have had no problems with comfort. I play about 15-20 hours of video games with this headset weekly, and I have not been running into comfort issues. All I can think of for the reviewers who find their headset "top heavy" or uncomfortable on the top of their head is to adjust the sides of the headset. Heads come in all different shapes and sizes, obviously. Tinkering with these adjustments could help. Another popular issue is the battery life. I get about 4 hours of battery life. This is not really a problem for me because I sit close enough to my PS3 that I can have it plugged in if it is running low. But how much more battery life do you need, really? I have a backup bluetooth headset just to be safe. The final though I have on this headset is the numerous options on it. The bass can be adjusted up and down, the game volume opposed to the voice volume can be adjusted, and the master volume has a separate volume adjuster. There is also a button that scrolls through different headset categories, such as 'movie', 'music', and 'game' (which can be even further adjusted to game type such as 'shooter', 'racing', etc). One hope I have for this headset is a dedicated stand/dock. This would be a great addition for such a nice headset.SOUND: 5 starsCOMFORT: 4.5 stars (it is slightly top heavy)BATTERY: 3.5 starsVALUE: 5 stars

Let me start off by saying if you're planning on buying these to listen to music with or not use with a PlayStation 3. Then you might want to reconsider your purchase. However, if you bought these to have the best experience with your PS3, then by all means add to your cart and buy. I'll break down what each button/slider does and my personal experience with this headset. And before anyone goes off, i'm not a Sony rep or anything. Just a fan of PlayStation. (not a fanboy)

*Left Earcup*

Volume: On the backside there's a volume slider. These things can get pretty loud. When used with the PS3, and the proper settings applied, all the sound comes straight through to the headphones. Perfect for late night gaming with other people in the house, or simply gaming in silence to block out all other sound.

Mic Mute: Located on the back lower end. This is self explanatory. Toggle's your mic on/off. When the mic is toggled off, the LED on the front end turns purple. Nice little indication, even if you can't see the LED.

On/Off: Located just opposite of the Mic Mute. Simple slider to turn the headphones On/Off. I recommend having your PS3 on first. Also gives a reaffirming beep when there on, and when they connect.

Voice Chat/Game Sound: Located on the front of this earcup, oppsite the Volume slider. Sliding it down fades In-Game voice chat to the dominant sound. Sliding it up makes the game volume dominant. Very useful when trying to coordinate attacks in BF3 or Ghost Recon: FS.

*Right Earcup*

BassImpact (BI): At first you may think, "That's just a gimmick. Vibrating headset? Pssh!" But let me clarify. They don't vibrate as the Dualshock 3, they Pulse. Hence the name. When I played Battlefield 3, each gunshot sent a slight pulse through the headset. This is adjustable via the slider on the rear side. I recommend keeping it pretty low, as a high setting gets a bit ridiculous. Especially when a tank is creeping up alongside and you `feel' the rumble of the tracks along the pavement. Or a helicopter hovers above and you can `feel' the thunder of its propeller's tearing the air.

Mode Select: This isn't advertised much. Located on the lower backend. Pressing the button toggle's 6 different modes that optimizes BassImpact depending on your media choice. The modes are: Game, Movie, Music, Shooter, Fighting, and Racing. I tested each one of these extensively. For Game i played Uncharted 3, Batman Arkham City, and Assassin's Creed Revelation. The 7.1 surround sound emulation is amazing. Of course it doesn't beat a real home audio system. For a $150 headset, it exceeds expectations. For Movie i watched Transformers 3. As you can imagine Michael Bay's explosions in every corner came through without flaw. And i could tell where each explosion was. For Music i listened to some Dub-step and Hip-Hop. It does well at translating the low frequencies into "Pulse's". I wouldn't recommend these for audiophile's when it comes to music. However, they fare better than your average headset. Shooter i played Battlefield 3, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, and Modern Warfare 3. Gameplay was exceptional. Every explosion was heard exactly in relation to my soldier. Even hearing the footsteps from an enemy about to knife me has saved me numerous times. For Fighter i played Tekken Tag 2. I "felt" every blow and quick combo around my head. Turning the BI all the way was a bit too intense though. And for Racing i played Need for Speed Shift and Burnout Paradise. The roaring of every car as i passed by, or took me down was incredible. I'm not exaggerating either. Sony did a great job at Pulsing for every crash, punch, and explosion.

Virtual Surround Sound (VSS): Opposite of the Mode select. Holding this button toggles 7.1 VSS on/off. As i stated before, it won't beat a true 7.1 home audio system. But as most of those range in the thousands of dollars. A $150 headset does an excellent job and providing that sense of immersion. This is something you can't really experience through my review. You have to hear it to believe it.

That's basically it for the hardware tour. Now here's my two cents.

These headsets work with pretty much anything with a USB port or a 3.5mm headphone jack. I don't have my Xbox at the moment so i can't really say if it works with that or not. But i've read that if your TV has a USB port, you can plug the adapter in there and all the sound going through the TV will go to the headset wirelessly. If you plan on using these portably. An auxiliary cable comes bundled to use with an iPod, PS Vita, or smartphone. Note that none of the features work when the aux cable is plugged it. So using it you have standard, less than average, headphones. However, using these headsets with the adapter in your PC provides a great experience. The only thing i've been able to find out that doesn't work with the PC is the VSS. However, they still sound great listening to music and watching movies. I don't game on my PC so i can't really speculate there. Best of all it's wireless. Yup. Wherever you plug in the USB adapter makes these wireless. I no longer have my Android Tablet so i can't say if it'll work with that. However i'm going to try with my Galaxy Nexus and a USB adapter. Not an ideal setup but i'll update if it works.

Where this product really shines is when used with a PlayStation 3 system. After all, that's what it's designed for. With the BassImpact exceeding expectations, 7.1 VSS sounding incredible, the mode select enhancing the BassImpact experience, the crystal clear mic and sound fading ability, and the added on-screen information about battery, VSS, and mic mute. There really is no alternative for a PS3 gamer.

My only gripe, is comfortability. I have regular 4-6 hour gaming sessions with a variety of games. Around-the-ear they're exceptional. But the top piece, over-the-head, gives an uncomfortable pressing on the top of my head after about an hour or two. I plan on putting a memory foam pad on them, but in the meantime, I'm forced to use a washcloth. It looks a bit ridiculous but it works.
Verdict: If you've read this far I'm sure you've already made your decision. But if you just scrolled down looking for the conclusion. Scroll no further. These headphones perfect for any PS3 gamer. Even a PC gamer can find everything they need here. I don't recommend using with, say, an iPod or a PS Vita. Yes it works, but the sound quality is lackluster at best. BassImpact isn't a gimmick, and the VSS works very well. All in all i'd give these a 9/10. Losing 1 point just for the over-the-head piece being slightly uncomfortable. For $150 these are a steal. Even if you're not a hardcore gamer like myself, if you use the PS3 as your primary entertainment/gaming center. These are a must buy.

Hope this, lengthy, review helped and gave you all the info you needed.

For headphones within the same price point as the Sony Pulse Elite, this wins hands down. The headphones are just amazing. For the affordable price, the build quality is good, and it has a host of features (the best thing being that all of them can be turned off or adjusted to your preference).

1. The wireless feature is very convenient, whether on the PS3, TV, or PC. I have not had issues with interference, static, or connection issues even in the living room (my sofa is quite far away from the PS3).

2. The virtual surround sound creates a wider spatial sound field, which is better than stereo, when used for movies and games. Please do NOT expect this to sound like a true 7.1 sound system with discrete channels. What is used here is a more budget-conscious virtualization technology, but it is well implemented. Some virtual surround technology distorts audio, which I hate - something which the Sony doesn't do. Audio sounds clean even with VSS enabled.

3. Different preset modes can be selected (movie, game, shooter, Last of Us, Bioshock, etc.) and more can be downloaded if you plug in the headset to the PS3. Using the right mode is important - for e.g. if I select SHOOTER while watching a movie, it is almost unbearable as it will over exaggerate the bass. I used the "Last of Us mode", for well, obviously that titled game and it sounds good. Watching movies with the MOVIE mode is good as well. I tested GAME mode with Uncharted 3, with VSS (virtual 7.1), and it does sound good (in relative perspective. It will NOT beat my 5.1 system): I am able to discern the direction of where different sounds are coming from e.g. the waterfall behind me.

4. BassImpact. This is a feature that thumps/vibrates the ear pads. I appreciate this feature when I am playing shooters and fighting games. I would not recommend this feature for movies or music - as the thumping actually does distort the sound. You can turn it off.

5. When using with my mobilephone, I plug it in with the included 3.5mm audio cable. I tested it both with the power ON and OFF. The headset will work even with the POWER OFF, although you will not be able to use the various settings such as VSS and mode select. I am very pleased with the quality of sound and volume. When used with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, my music sounded crisp on the mid and highs. Bass is on the mild side but that is the way I like my music. Even with the POWER OFF, the volume of this headset is LOUD. It is more then sufficient. Surprisingly, when I used my Seinheissers, my phone doesn't seem to have enough power to drive the headset resulting in soft volume; this is NOT a problem with the Pulse Elite. I actually prefer the way my music sound with the headset powered off, rather than on, when listening to music on my mobilephone - it sounds more natural without all the enhanced effects.

6. When playing games on the PS3, I recommend that the VSS feature is turned on.

7. When used on the PS3, you are able to see on screen all the settings you apply on your headset. For e.g. if you press mute, it shows up on screen on a small bar on the top right hand corner. It also shows other info such as battery levels.

8. If you turn off the BassImpact feature, the battery lasts a lot longer.

9. This headset is uncomfortable when I first got it as it was rather tight. However, after a week of use, it got seasoned and is now comfortable. As all closed-ear headsets are, your ears will get hot after an hour or so, as such, I give my ears some "airing" every hour of use.

10. The USB charging cable is not included. I assume Sony did not include this as it was intended for the PS3, which comes with a USB charging cable (the same one used to charge the PS3 controllers). However, since a USB cable cost so little, just a few bucks, I would have appreciated that Sony included this accessory for a headset costing over a hundred bucks.

11. The inner ear of the headset (the ear cups), actually have a slanted depression to fit your ears. i.e. there is more space at the back for where your ear flaps are. This makes fitting more comfortable.

12. MUSIC: I am able to discern the various instruments used in classical and instrumental pieces. This is what I like about these headphones. Vocals are also crystal clear.

For it's simplicity, quality, and price - the Pulse Elite comes highly recommended.

Nothing beats my 5.1 surround sound system, but when I don't want to disturb the neigbours or my family, I enjoy using the Pulse Elites. Yes, there are headsets that have discrete channels but the problem with them is that: (i) they cost a lot more, (ii) some of them have a bunch of messy wires to connect whereas the Pulse Elites are just plug and play simple, (iii) most of them have a microphone piece that is sticking out - I hate it as I don't like anything in front of my face - the embedded mic of the Pulse Elites work well for gaming purposes. (iv) I would wear the Pulse Elites while walking to work as they don't look like some over-the-top design gaming headset!

5.0 out of 5 stars Comfy, superb sound quality but defective design
Reviewed in Canada on May 3, 2021
Amazing headset for sound quality, PHENOMENAL bass. Only downside is they tend to break right above the earmuff as the plastic wears down over time. It seems to be a defect straight from the factory on all versions, as I have had three sets since 2013. Be sure to put them on and take them off via the top of the headband rather than stretching out the muffs and you'll extend the life of them indefinitely.
