I was told by Game Stop that this will be sold in VERY limited quantities for the holiday shopping season. Afterwards it will be very hard to find.I had this title for my Super NES, and requested a copy for Christmas. This is my dream title for the Wii. I used to have the NES before the Super NES, and have adored Super Mario Bros ever since.Reserve a copy of this baby NOW before the end of the year. This will be released on December 12th, and it will definitely be the Tickle Me Elmo of 2010.

There is no greater mascot in video game history than Mario, and there are probably no greater games ever developed than the ones he has been starring in since 1985... especially the original Super Mario Bros., a game we will ALL remember forever going back to our very first experiences with it! It is fitting, then, that Nintendo has chosen to celebrate this iconic game's 25th anniversary with a special re-release for fans. What makes this version special is that you get the entire Super Mario Bros. series in one wonderful package!

There are upsides and downsides, of course. If you owned Super Mario All-Stars for your Super NES, there is nothing new to see here from a software perspective. I might almost argue that it's somewhat puzzling that these games' 16-bit makeovers are the versions being presented to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros.--itself originally an 8-bit game. Clearly, all the original 8-bit versions of these games are available for download via the Wii's Virtual Console, while Super Mario All-Stars is not, thus not sticking Wii owners with the uncomfortable notion of having to buy something they might otherwise have already downloaded... and also allowing Nintendo to make $30 off of a hard copy collection, rather than $8 for a digital download! (And if you're a newer Nintendo fan who never played All-Stars before, then you'll certainly find yourself in for a treat.)

That said, none of this feels terribly exploitative. That packaging alone is worth the purchase, with its extremely classy red box and gold embossed logos. The game itself is packaged in a regular-style Wii game disc case that fits in nicely with the rest of your library, and the four games included on the disc are as classic and wonderfully engaging as they ever were. The Super Mario History booklet is a joy (albeit a fairly brief joy) to flip through, with its colorful artwork and short blurbs of fun insight from Super Mario's original creators. And the soundtrack CD is a wonderful musical retrospective of Super Mario's adventures, all the way up to this year's astounding Super Mario Galaxy 2.

What are the cons? Well, Nintendo definitely spared some expenses on overall presentation. The original All-Stars game is about as bare-bones as you'd've expected to find it back in 1993. This being a celebration of 25 years of Super Mario, one would've expected at least SOME bonus features on the game disc, of SOME kind. I personally would have liked a collection of Nintendo Channel videos, such as creator interviews, super play videos, and the excellent Super Mario History video. This would have been a real treat for fans who (shamefully) do not make use of the Wii's online capabilities, and a nice bonus to look back on when playing this game in later years.

I know a lot of people are complaining about this direct port's lack of widescreen support, but personally I find that there is a certain charm in the hardcore retro presentation (much like Capcom gave us with their new Mega Man 9 and 10 games). If I really want this game in widescreen, I can still pop in my original Super NES cartridge and let my TV work a bit of negligible widening magic on it. Frankly I'm not sure why it's such an important issue to some fans. My only point of dissatisfaction with the game itself is that controls do not feel nearly as responsive as they do on the Super NES original; I don't know how many pits I've already fallen to my death in because of a seemingly belated "jump" command from my Classic Controller. Since these games are platforming classics requiring a lot of jumping precision over many perilous obstacles and pits of death, this slower response time from the controller can be a real killer (literally, for poor Mario, anyway!). I've had better experiences simply using the Wii Remote on its own, but I'll admit I'd been hoping for the Classic Controller to more perfectly emulate the Super NES experience... but I'm not finding that to be so much the case. I have not yet attempted to play with a GameCube controller, however.

Additionally, the soundtrack CD--while consisting of many wonderful classic tunes--is similarly bare-bones. At only 25 minutes in length, each game from Super Mario's history is represented through a single piece of music... which is kind of a shame considering how many amazing, memorable tunes were generated by each game in the series. And Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is not so much as mentioned anywhere in this entire collection, to Nintendo's shame... anybody who played it during the Super NES era can tell you that it's as great as any other game in this long, fantastic series. The sound effects are a fun addition to the CD, but it only take seconds to listen through them all before you find yourself simply wishing that a lot more of the great music you remember had been included.

The bottom line? If you're a longtime Mario fan like me, then this collection is a no-brainer. Hey, get two for collectibility's sake. Nintendo's already announced that this will be available in VERY limited quantities, ensuring it a long and very profitable life on Ebay. What you get here for your $30 investment is absolutely worth it... an economical way to celebrate 25 years of Super Mario Bros. If Nintendo had chosen to charge the normal $50 premium for this, I think we'd all have a lot more to feel disappointed about. As it stands, for what you pay, it's a beautiful collector's set that belongs in every Wii owner's library! And an absolute must-own for newer and younger Mario fans, especially. Get it while you can!

As I am sure most people who are reading this and for those who do not know this is a compilation of the first 4 Super Mario Bros. Games from the original 8 bit NES Catalog (Yes, I said 4 not 3, I'll explain later in the review) that was re-released as a compilation on the 16 bit SNES back in 1993 (Also look up the Wikipedia entry "Super Mario All All Stars" for more details]. In addition to originally porting the original 4 Games on to a SNES Game Cartridge they also face lifted the 8 bit graphics and music/sound quality to the 16 bit era of hardware which gave the games a new look, feel, and sound without taking away from the original game play roots. There is also the option of now saving your game progress that was not available for either the NES or SNES back in either of its incarnations. The original 4 games are as follows...

Super Mario Brothers - The Classic NES pack in that helped Nintendo make the NES and its company the dominating Video Game Console of its generation. The game is still very popular to this day with both 3rd Generation and Today's Gamers. This was originally released on the Family Computer Disk System in Japan and the US as the NES Pack In Game In 1985.

Super Mario Brothers: The Lost Levels - This was originally supposed to have been the direct sequel to Super Mario Brothers and the official Super Mario Brothers 2 However; this was only released in Japan since the CEO of Nintendo of America felt that the gaming population of the United States would not like it due to it being to difficult and being too close to the original Super Mario Brothers. This sequel has the play and feel of the first game which both my son and I prefer this original treatment over the travesty of what Nintendo did release instead as its direct sequel in the United States. This was originally released on the Family Computer Disk System only in Japan in 1986.

Super Mario Brothers 2: Mario Madness - As mentioned previously this is Nintendo of America's answer as a sequel for the original Super Mario Brothers. All this is a redesign of another of Nintendo's games that was originally released in Japan called Yume Kôjô: Doki Doki Panic "Dream Factory: Heart-Pounding Panic" that replaced that games characters with Mario, Luigi, Peach, etc. The Game had mixed responses from loving it for its new direction it had taken to despising it for not having the connection to the original Super Mario Brothers Game (As both my son and I responded to it). This was originally released on the NES only in the US in 1988.

Super Mario Brothers 3 - The fourth and last of the Super Mario Brothers Games for the NES, this game restored allot of its game play connections to the original Super Mario Brothers with adding new game play and elements. With that said those who shunned its Original American sequel (See above) this game restored the faith in the franchise of those who had been disillusioned by the above mentioned American sequel. This was the NES's most popular game for that system right behind the original Super Mario Brothers. This was originally released on the Family Computer Disk System in Japan in 1988 and for the NES in the US in 1990.

The Wii's Limited Edition 25th Anniversary of the Super Mario Brothers All Stars also includes a 32 page booklet of the Original Games concepts and designs along with a Music CD of the games Music.

WARNING! Do not expect this to have an upgraded face lift from what Nintendo did with the original re-issue of the SNES version to Wii technology level like in the new Super Mario Brothers Wii. It comes as it was when originally released on the SNES in 1993, with the improved 16 bit graphics and sounds of the original 8 bit games.

For those who want the original 8 bit versions of the games and not the improved 16 bit improved version the original games the 8 bits versions are available for download with Nintendo's Wii ware directly to your Wii Console's system memory or SD Card However be warned! You cannot transfer the games to another Wii system and are tied only to the Wii it was downloaded (Even if you downloaded it to a SD Card).

Overall, both I and my son love this re-issue of the Super Mario Brothers All Stars for the Wii. I would highly recommend it for anyone who want to enjoy a time when things were simpler and easier to passing the experience your children, this was well worth the 30 dollars we paid for it (About $7.50 a game).

This product is to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the series that many gamers wouldn't be even be gamers if they didn't play it: Super Mario Bros. from the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) from 1985-1991. This package features the updated visuals from the Super Mario All-Stars version that re-released the NES classic games on the SNES. These games are flawless in gameplay including a NES game that defined platform perfection: Super Mario Bros. 3. In addition you get the classics: Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (initially only released in Japan!) all on disc format for the first time. These games are still magic!! This package also includes unseen sketches and information about the Mario Bros. series as well as a CD containing signature tunes and sound effects that helped make Mario so popular. The price is perfect for these games as you are getting four full games, a book, and CD for under $30 bucks. If you want the virtual console versions of the games then go buy them there. But true Mario fans know why they are purchasing this GIFT and that is to collect and celebrate our favorite Italian plumber. Buy this for the entire family. Newcomers will cherish these games as much as us Nintendo long-time fans. I myself, never owned these updated versions back when they were released. Happy Holidays!!! (2010).

Don't even consider a review under 4 stars as they obviously didn't read the product description. Super Mario World was a Super Nintendo (SNES) game that was launched FREE with the purchase of an SNES. This package features the NES Super Mario Bros. games as in the product description there is an actual picture of an NES system. If there was an SNES then you could have a point, but it's obvious this package is only for the NES games!
