The main thing that I enjoy is that this an action RPG that is stripped of much of the dialog and focuses more on the gameplay. I highly recommend it if you enjoy the genre and/ or subject matter. I also recommend that you check out some of the forums or wikis on this game to help getting started. It has a very high initial learning curve.
What sets this game apart are two things:
1) It's hard. Well, that's not the whole thing...it's stupid hard. You don't gain XP for killing enemies, you gain their "souls". These can be spent to increase your abilities (the cost which scales quite rapidly) or (along with other components) improve your weapons. When you die, something you'll be doing frequently, you'll lose all of it...unless you can make it back to the spot where you died and grab it back from your bloodstain. Should you die before reaching it though....its all gone. That wouldn't be so bad except about every 20 minutes worth of actual gameplay, you'll stumble upon some situation like the following:
On the *second* level of the game, there is a bridge you must cross while a dragon repeatedly comes down and breathes fire on it. It you strip naked and run as fast as you can, you can just make it to the other side, only to be surrounded by about 12+ nasty enemies that are almost sure to kill you within milliseconds. The common to get past this part is to literally spend an hour pot-shotting the dragon from a location that his fire doesn't reach. This is a pretty indicative microcosm of this game...finding some cheap exploit to get past an otherwise ridiculously hard situation.
This is made worse by the fact that many of these situations are thrust on you without warning...and almost all of them require you to go through about 20 minutes of (otherwise satisfyingly challenging) gameplay repeatedly to get there. Even the otherwise satisfyingly difficult gameplay becomes trite the 3rd and 4th time you're redoing it, not to mention the 10th time.
2) The most unique feature of the game is the spontaneous multiplayer. When you die, You become a "spirit" and have less life and do (slightly more/less, not sure) damage. The only way to regain your living (body) form is to:
- Defeat what amounts to bosses.
- Co-op: join someone else's game where they are a living soul and help them defeat a boss
- or go PVP and try to kill another player.
I'm not a big PvP fan, and i admit I haven't tried it. As for the co-op version I have attempted to do this for weeks in this game, but I haven't experienced it once. This is the critical flaw in this game: NO ONE WANTS TO BE IN BODY FORM. Dying (a frequent activity in this game) while in body form can cause irreparable changes to the game world, so nobody plays in that mode. This means no one will accept you into their game (because almost no one is playing in body form) and no one will join your game (because the reward is, at best, a drawback).
This is an otherwise fun, if very Japanese, dark fantasy style game. I like the challenging gameplay...and might even be able to overlook the frequent stupid parts of it if it weren't for the fact the the major unique and defining component of the game discourages its own use. The game has set the bar for poor design implementation. and the amount of potential this game flushes down the toilet is truly frustrating. It will be decades, if ever, before another game comes along with a defining feature that that is more poorly implemented than Demon's Souls.
Making something hard is ok, but making it hard for the sake of being hard, that is just dumb.
This is a game for HARDCORE gamers, who want to invest time in redundancy. I have not the time nor the desire to do so.
Graphics are good, the characters move slightly sluggishly.
The boss battles are huge, and that is something I like, it just takes too much repetition to get to the boss.
If you have the time and desire to repeat the same steps over and over again in a well crafted world, this game is for you.
Avoid, though, if you have not the time or desire to play, die, repeat.
