From the Manufacturer
Immerse yourself in the World of Hakuoki
Hakuoki: Warriors of the Shinsengumi for the PSP (PlayStationPortable) system is the first action game from the hit series Hakuoki. As a member of a legendary group of warriors from bygone Japan, battle against imperial forces, demons, and more in the first hack/slash game from this critically acclaimed series. Based on the visual novel, Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom, Hakuoki: Warriors of the Shinsengumi brings together the great storytelling that defines this series and action-packed adventure for everyone to enjoy.
Pick Your Warrior
As one of six warriors, master your sword (or spear) and defeat your enemies. With hordes coming at you, the only way to survive is to use special skills and combination attacks in order to gain experience and become even more powerful.
Deplete your life gauge completely and become a ferocious fury, a deadly demon capable of unmatched destruction (applies to only certain characters). With your abilities heightened, no enemy can stand in your way. But beware – becoming a fury too often will invite a particularly terrible ending.
Two Story Modes
Hakuoki: Warriors of the Shinsengumi offers two story modes, featuring cut-scenes from the anime series, Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom, and three difficulty levels.
Shinsengumi Memorial
Follow the events of Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom, but this time, find your own inner warrior as you battle for honor, duty, and glory.
Shinsengumi Chronicle
In these alternate universe scenarios, control the fate of the Shinsengumi warriors as history unfolds differently. Especially written for this game, learn about what could have happened in these exciting “what if” scenarios.
Skirmish Mode
Once you have completed a level, revisit it to level up, obtain better scores, and refine your skills. Here, you can unlock two playable characters and use their special skills to duke it out.

I only have one source of contention...the bandana. It is the reason why this great game only gets four stars. Though I hate to do it, it is an overall product rating. The bandana looked and felt like poor quality (for a bandana). It is made out of wall scroll material or a meshy type if you don't own a wall scroll. I liked the images they chose for it but the thing isn't made for what it is named. They should of called it a mini poster or wall scroll rather than a bandana. Oh well I can guess most of us will be hanging it up anyway. :p
Anyone who played DEMON knows that as a visual novel there is no direct fighting. Its all 'choose option a, b, or c' and the story evolves through your choices. It made sense, since Chizuru is not what you would call a capable fighter at first and the story was built upon her reactions to the events unfolding around her. This annoyed some gamers who didn't expect this (there's very few visual novels games on the market domestically that aren't hentai) and thrilled those of us who were waiting anxiously for it.
WARRIORS tried to bridge the gap between the two, largely to no success. Their premise seemed built on that fans of DEMON aren't into fighting games and thus made the game as simple as possible.
In "Chronicles" its 5 or 6 levels of basically "Defeat 20 Imperial Soldiers!", defeat those soldiers, 'Find the Captain!', defeat the Captain and then do this 3 times in the level. Its ridiculously easy, even on the 'hardest' setting, to just combo the living daylights out of the Bosses and defeat them with relatively no harm done to yourself. Especially if you filly our 'Sakura' gauge--you max that puppy out before the 'Big Boss' of the level and you'll kick their butt in under a minute, 2 minutes max for Kodo's final form.
After finishing Hijikata, Souji and Harada's 'stories' in Chronicles I decided to play Heisuke's basically seeing how many soldiers (or furies, depending on where you're at in the 'story') I could defeat in a time restraint I placed on myself just to give myself some sort of challenge.
Its important to note that whether you defeat the Boss or not, it doesn't really affect things in the stories (in Chronicles). Things continue on their relentlessly depressing path towards decimation for the Shinsengumi no matter how kick butt you are as a Warrior. In a couple instances I achieved 'overwhelming victory' only to move to the next level and be told that 'the crippling defeat the Shinsengumi suffered at so-and-so stage...'.
Since it was so easy to play I haven't yet had a 'bad ending' where I've burst out into Fury mode too much (I haven't even lost more then half my life in any of the levels and that's without aide), so I can't speak to that.
As for 'Memorial', this is...there was many times throughout DEMON where I wanted to take control and be like 'And that's how you end a threat' (instead of the method of Chizuru is in danger who can save her!?, even as a visual novel fan that gets tiring at times). This game doesn't REALLY offer that. The scenes where fighting was or could occur--such as whenever Kazama and his crew showed up to kidnap Chizuru--are what you're basically playing, but without the rest of the game it feels empty.
For instance the first time Kazama shows up, you can't defeat/kill him and then play the rest of the game as if he's dead. Equally if your character is defeated/killed the game doesn't restructure itself to change the storyline around to accomadate that.
Stick to DEMON. If you want a game that uses both the 'visual novel' elements and 'fighting' elements, look at the Persona series--the games aren't without their own faults, but it better blends the two genres to appeal to fans of both types. Here's hoping that IDEA FACTORY and AKSYS bring more of the Hakuoki games over (or even one of OTOMATE's other series, there's quite a few that are interesting plays).
