With over 80 mini games, there is a great variety of games in which to play. I was impressed with the creativity of and ingenuity in so many of the games. With so many mini games, you would think that many of the games would be redundant, but they are not and the games enable kids and adults to exercise their memory, observation, and math skills.
The board and mini games are extremely kid/family friendly. The game topics range from sports (Basketball, swimming), to racing (remote control cars, racing on animals), to cooking (remembering which ingredients the chef used to make soup). Even the games that involve any kind of combat are safe for children (i.e., characters are on pogo sticks and you have to "bump" the other characters off a platform; all characters have balloons attached to their helmets and you use your hammer to pop their balloons;).
For each game, the controls and rules are carefully laid out so that they are easy for young and old to grasp quickly. The controls are very straight forward and consistent, and in some cases, you have the opportunity to "practice" in order to better understand the rules and controls before playing.
You have House Party mode (Group/team oriented games), TV Party Mode (5 Types of board games and access to all mini-games), and GamePad Party Mode (Play 6 game types with just the GamePad). Our favorite is TV Party Mode. In particular, the "Balldozer" game which randomly selects 5 mini games that participants compete in across 5 rounds. It is a great way to eventually play through all of the mini-games. My 7-year old son especially likes going straight to the mini-games and playing them directly (and repeatedly).
Wii U Party also makes great use of the GamePad and how you can use it standalone (no-TV) or in conjunction with the other Wii U remotes in House Party or TV Party Mode.
We have had the game for two years now and even with a slew of Lego, Disney Infinity, and Mario games, we still play it a lot. Since we have fun with the two player games and it is especially good for families, mixed age groups, and even those who are not "traditional" gamers for those 3 to 4 player games, I believe its "replayability" will remain high.
I highly recommend it for your Wii U game library.
There's a lot of minigames, so forgive me if my review is a bit scatter-brained.
There's 3 modes to play, a board game sorta thing where you and friends compete to get around the map and get to the goal by completing minigames. Think of a less good Mario Party in this regard, though the mini-games can be very different.
The other mode is where you pick from the entirely different games and this can range from a game show where you have 15 seconds to doodle to one of those games you'd see at an arcade where 3 platforms move about pushing balls onto lower levels if you drop your ball in the right spot.
The final one are all table top games, where you and the other player sit with the tablet controller flat on a table between eachother and you two use it's functions to play simple games. These were really amusing to me as they were trying to emulate a game you'd see made of wood and metal. You do have to play these games on the tablet, they do appear on the TV too but it's not in a way I'd say would be easier.
There's a lot of games on here that range from ehhh to really amusing. My favorite being the one where you take a photo of your face with the controller and the other players guess what you were expressing from a list.
My issue with the game is it suffers from Nintendo's "everyone has a chance to win no matter what" so even if you did luck out and manage to have a crazy lead of 36 points to 1 or something, Nintendo-effect kicks in and they have a bonus round that can easily have a player in 1 shot over shoot the lead score.I'm all for things being fair but it's insane how easily the one in dead last can overtake first place.
It makes the starting rounds feel needless and there's no option to alter this sadly. Now this doesn't ruin the game, I'm not really competitive myself but friends have complained so it's a valid point to make in this review.
Overall it's an enjoyable game for all ages and the only real universal negative is this game requires many Wii controllers and friends for it to be playable. If you only have a wiiU and you wanted to get this? You'd need at least 1 more wii controller to make this work as the tablet controller does not work for all games. But the game certainly is worth it as the controller itself is expensive alone by itself.
