The single player campaign provides about 8 hours of gameplay or longer if you take the time to find all the hidden items on each map. The voice acting is good, and the cut scenes are well directed. The game runs smooth, and the sound effects give it an arcade-like feel. Unlike most other titles, the ending/final boss fight was satisfying. There is DLC available (on Steam only) that enables Swarm-Mode Co-Op play -- I have not tried it yet.
Cons:
There is no replay value. Once you beat the game there are zero changes. You can manually change the difficulty setting to hard but the difference is unnoticeable. The plot is unfollowable. Cutscenes can last longer than actual battles due to gross imbalances between you and a very limited number of enemies. AI is weak and friendly bots are useless; always moving into your line of fire and blocking your shots. Boss fights can end in less than 12 seconds. There is multiplayer but no community.
Overall:
Worth the price? ($6) Yes.
Recommended? No.
It reminded me of old-school basic & simple games we used to play.
I like mech games in general.
The music is very well-done and the voice acting, while uneven, isn't hideous.
The graphics are pretty good, besides a very annoying tendency to put hanging vegetation or rubble in front of the camera when your wanzer is backed against a wall.
Gameplay itself is solid, though tedious- get used to the "Brawler Wanzer"- you'll be seeing him over and over and over.
So why so negative? First, the plot looks like they spent five minutes copying a soap opera and putting a giant AI in for J.R. The action itself is so much on rails you barely need waypoints- you're not allowed to go anywhere else. Walking tanks with ammo loadouts that could blow the Kremlin to Kansas can't destroy annoying buildings or wreckage, apparently- flanking the enemy would become too easy.
As it is, it plays like a graphic novel, with nothing you do really affecting the story in the slightest. Blow up the baddies and there are more- destroy an incoming Osprey (troop carrier) and the enemy pulls another out of his hat. Destroy the enemies with the most powerful weapons in the game, and they laugh at you and leave. Get to the final battle with the named adversaries, blow them up, and they sulk like little children who've been thrashed in checkers. The only deaths that seem meaningful are when the good guys bite it, always as unavoidable plot events. There is simply no closure, and damn little satisfaction.
I finally used a trainer to finish it, as some of the boss battles were flatly impossible. With the trainer, there might be an hour of actual action here and another 45 minutes of cutscenes. Without some sort of cheat option, you could waste days and finally give up in disgust.
To fix this? Ditch the plot- get a new one that doesn't involve the mostly-useless EDGE system. In fact, cornfield that whole fiasco and start over. Open up the maps so you don't feel like a train engine half the time. Add some kind of 'simulation' system so you can practice to improve Wiz and get better skills and stats instead of just buying better equipment- 'Hey, we want you to go save the world, but you can't afford the good stuff'. If someone really tries hard and grinds the heck out of the 'simulation' maps, eventually they could work up to weapons and armor like what the bosses get for free. /bitter
This ran bug-free on WinXP, it looked good, sounded better- I wanted to like it. Maybe I should just wait for Mechwarrior V.
I have given up on this game and will never again buy a game where the play is stored online.
