I am wondering if I should get a dreamcast, everyone seems to love it. Are there a lot of good games for it? If so what are they? How much should I expect to pay for one and what accessories should I be looking for?

Most of the great games on it have been ported to PS2/GC/Xbox

There are a couple still DC only but not enough IMO.

then again..DC's are like...$20 so why not? :p

I figure Im getting a system selector and getting this awesome shelf thingy built so I may aswell have stuff to put on it aswell as things to plug into the system selector. Currently I have a ps2, Wii, 360, N64 and SNES

You can probably get one for as low as $5-10 at a thrift store or flea market. Well worth it, a number of good games for it.

Yes get one! The games for the DC rock Sonic, Resident Evil, Ecco, Shenmue, Space Channel 5 and more all on one cheap system.

Also try to get a VMU just because they're neat

The VMU is still the best thing to ever happen to football games....no more being able to guess the person's play based on what you can see on the TV
soul calibur was awesome
Still is. I think this is the best fighting game on a home system, ever. While I love SCII on the xbox and SCIII on the PS2, neither came close to the feel of the DC one. It's a perfect friggin' 10 in everything...

I know, the VMU would have also been perfect for the local multiplayer of a Clubhouse Games-esque collection. It is also unfortunate that the DC came out before the Texas-Hold-Em' fad started, as the VMU would also be perfect for that game too.

also many DC port doesnt look or play as good on PS2. For example Space Channel 5 and Grandia 2 is better on the DC. Also some games like Resident Evil 2 and 3 are cheaper on DC than GC

Yeah, Grandia 2 got a crap port to PS2, but it was mostly a rush job since Ubisoft wanted to release a version that might sell well.

As for RE 2 & 3, they might be cheaper than the GC versions, but they're not as common as the GC versions since the reprint.

Yes, well worth it.

Why? Jet Set Radio, Chu Chu Rocket, Soul Calibur -- all worth the price of admission, which isn't very high at this point in time.

You can buy a DC and Marvel vs Capcom 2 for cheaper than the game itself on PS2 or Xbox. That along with Soul Calibur and Last Blade 2 are well worth the price of admission.

Being that they're cheap, sure, pick one up.

I'm always confused though at people's comments defending the system like it's the greatest thing to ever happen to video games. If it had lasted longer it might have been great, but the controller design really hamstrings itself in what could've been its best feature: arcade perfect 2D fighters from the Naomi board.

If there were just 6 facebuttons, that would've solved it. :(

Yeah, that was one of the console's cons. Look at what they did with Rainbow Six, they had to shoehorn a lot of commands in the 4 face buttons, the d-pad and holding a shoulder trigger & press the d-pad.

Fighters were pretty hard on the hands too.

You can always get a PS2 to DC converter and solve all your problems. Playing the 2D fighters with a stick is the only way to go anyway unless you can find the ridiculously expensive but uber awesome ASCII fighting pad.

For most other games, I'd use a DC controller over a PS2 controller anyday. I really prefer that analog stick placement more than anything. You'll also run into some memory card problems using a PS2 pad because some games don't allow full freedom of Memory Card and controller port access.

I also prefer the pad. But finding a ASCII pad or Saturn to DC converters are damn near impossible. If it's that much of a detriment, play on the PS2 with a Street Fighter pad(easier to find but poor quality) or a Darkstalkers pad (impossible to find but excellent quality).

Ugggh, I can't even play 3d person or FPS's with the DC controller, it's too awkward. Do you know which games have memory card problems or is it different depending on the adapter you get ?

If you still haven't gotten one yet I'd recommend getting one of the earlier models. Before they made it so you couldnt run your own bootable discs without a mod chip. There's a lot of great free stuff available and things to play with.

For $20, the DC is a steal. I have yet to see any DC to PS2 or Xbox ports that are as good as the original DC version. I hold up Hydro Thunder and Rush 2049 as prime examples; neither control or are as smooth on other systems. When you factor in games you cannot get on other systems, like HOTD2, Typing of the Dead, Speed Devils, Soul Calibur, Sega Bass (or better yet, Marine) Fishing, and others, it seems silly not to own one.

I picked up a Dreamcast, after years of not playing any video games, just as it was announced that Sega was abandoning the hardware business (around early 2001). What followed was a few years of catching up with the software and collecting as much as I could. It's always a fun hobby to ignore a system until it's in its final throes, because you can survey the best without slogging through the worst (necessarily).

I like the Dreamcast because of the broad range of titles it offers. Like a lot of people on CAG, I have an affinity for off-the-beaten-path games. Polished and coloful actioners like cannon spike, mr. driller, crazy taxi 1 & 2, power stone 1 & 2, jet set radio, the cool action RPGs like Shenmue 1 & 2, Record of Lodoss War, and all the incredible 2D fighters like SF Alpha, 3rd strike, marvel vs capcom 1@2; not forgetting some flat-out weird titles like seaman and typing of the dead (all worth owning).

Yeah, some of these games are available on other systems, some with extras beyond what the DC offers. Yeah, the controllers are not as ergonomic as the dualshock(tm).

But there is a quirky, polished simplicity to the overall design of the console, and not coincidently, the design of many of its games. This is a wonderful thing.

short answer yes
long answer hell fucking yes
the shooters on dc are awesome
but the folling are my favorite games
typing of the dead
power stone
chu chu rocket
street fighter 3
illbleed
shenmue

There is a Saturn to DC converter, too, so can you use the Saturn pad if that's your thing. I prefer sticks myself for 2D fighters and shmups (which the DC does very well).

I'd have to agree that most of the PS2 ports of DC games were done better on the DC. DC even has a few Saturn ports that are done better on DC. I don't think the DC is overrated at all. As others have said, there was about as wide a selection of games of all different genres from 2 to 3D, action to RPG.

This is not even counting Import games.

No question that the DC was a really great system for it's time, and it holds up pretty well compared to others that came out of the same period. It's cheap enough and not hard to find, so it's not hard to recommend...

My DC still gets a shit ton of use. The Sega arcade ports are enough to justify owning the system. Hell, they are hardly even ports since the DC is basically Naomi arcade hardware with less RAM.

I think you should. You can get a dreamcast and virtua tennis for less that the PS3 version. My friends and I have been playing the crap out of virtua tennis on dreamcast lately. We also played a little bomberman and sonic shuffle although shuffle is pretty lame.

Make sure to get Armada!! It's a super fun co-op space shooter RPG-lite!!

I love my Dreamcast. There's a bunch of lesser known games on it that are bad ass.

I had armada, but then the game got extremely hard, near impossible in the later levels. I might look for some codes to see what i can do, if i make the choice to buy it over again.

So did you get a Dreamcast, OP? I hate the threads when people ask if they should do something and then there's never any resolution. Makes me feel like an unwanted peon.......

I just got a Dreamcast today, and am trying to get any games I have for PS2 that are better on the Dreamcast, on the Dreamcast instead. Could somebody tell me why Space Channel 5 is better than the Special Edition on PS2?

with all the resounding "yes" i'm going to say no I picked up a DC at a pawn shop and the damn controller port was all fucked up..

I can only recommend it if you know for certain that it works and you at least have 2 controlers and some VMUs

I don't think I would get one now its ship kinda sailed.. the xbox sees more play from me but then again the xbox is basically DC advance.. so .. I don't know..

I wouldn't get one.. unless you are a hardcore fighting fan or Shumup fan (but if you are a hardcore fan of those genres you'd have a DC by now.. )

So you're saying no cause you got one from a pawn shop that had a blown controller port. That doesn't seem like a good "no" answer since it sounds like you never got a chance to play any games.

Welcome to the party pal - just 2-3 years too late T_T

Since the DC is dead and Sega no longer profits from any sales, all you need is a few VMU's, a 50-pack spindle of CDR's and the intranetz for all your DC gaming needs.

Hell, there's even a fully functioning Dreamcast emulator that has everyone but on-line play floating out there.

well.. i really wanted it to play crazy taxi honestly.. but the blown controller port is actually a widespread occurance.. so i would just be weary before getting one.. i also say no.. because of the huge amount of hype thats surrounds it then you actually get it and you just want to play the same games on a PS2 or xbox or something..

The DC coudl've been something great, but was cut off before its time. The adament DC supporters are largely bleeding-hearts, lamenting the premature passing of their system. There's not much on the system that isn't done elsewhere (and often better).

That being said, as the DC is essentially a Naomi arcade board in a white shell, if one of the numerous games running on that hardware which was ported to the DC is your thing, you'll be hardpressed to find better home versions of them anywhere else.

The Dreamcast is an awesome console. Get it for 2D fighters and shmups. Also don't listen to the other negative comments because those people do not know what they are talking about.
