Ive read the previous thread and one was helpful but im lookign for new info.

I want dslr performance but i cant afford it. I have an extremely nice canon i bought when our 1st kid came and love it, but i want similar performance in the digi realm.
I have a canon sd600 and for everyday photos, mainly outdoor photos, its great.
however the flash specifically is KILLING me, its gotten so im going to go buy a camera I shouldnt be buying.

anyway, my limit is $500, realistically anything above $400 is more than i should be spending, but i will if the camera performance warrants it.

I want the best bang for my buck for taking pictures of the kids, so indoor quality is the most important.
im afraid to go plunk down $400 and get it home only to have a barely noticable difference in image quality.

as usual TIA

Just went thru the same senario.
My first digi camera 1st generation Cybershot went belly up after a lot of use with the first two kids.

I did the research and just bought the Sony Cybershot DSC T-100.
The display screen is huge. In door pics are great. It has face detection which forces the camera to focus on a face, not the wall behind them.

8.1 megapix. I was impressed they were able to get 5x optical zoom.
This camera is the latest and greatest.

It retails for $399.
I used a Best Buy 10% coupon to get it for $360.
PriceGrabber shows it for low 300s.

If you get a high speed memory stick (pro duo), the camera actually takes pics faster. I recommend the Sandisk Ultra II (Amazon $45, 2GB). The high speed Sony brand was $100 for 2GB. For some reason high speed memory sticks are hard to find in stores. Frys had them, but for $80.

Why not a Canon? I have two different Canons at work plus I work with professional photographers who only use Canon pro SLRs, but prefer Sony pocket cams. Just the simple funtionality is worth it, Sony's interface is so simple, Canon is overly complex. I personally could stand the slow shutter speed of the Canons either and the consistant blurry pics from subtle movement (my experience).

I appreciate the post. i like the size of that camera, if i were in the market for a pocket cam id probably buy that, cnets reviews were good too.
I dont want to cut corners as far as size goes, with small size, other things suffer. i also dont want to buy more mem cards as i have several ultra2 sd cards.
im leaning towards a couple; canon a710is, canon s3 is and s5 is, cnon g7 (though the price puts it on the outside), and the pentax 100d as an entry level dslr.
ive been VERY happy with my canon sd600 since i bought it over a year ago, but the flash is killing me, it doesnt have the image stabilization that suits me and the lowlight photos arent where i want them to be. after looking over photos i took with my canon rebel eos of our first baby and comparing them to photos of our new baby taken with the sd600, im ready to spend some money.

i found the pentax online for $342 shipped. its over $700 at compusa and $600 at other retailers. the mp's are a little low but i think the image quality will make up for that as im not looking to blow anything up to large sizes.

If you need optical image stabilization, which equates to better low light performance, I'd go with the Canon SD800, the new SD850, or the A570. The A710 is nice, but it has the Digic II processor, so it doesn't have the bells and whistles of the new Digic III. Personally, I'd go for the A570is or the SD850. The A570 is nice in that it has a lot of manual controls.

I dont know much about cameras but I will recommend the Panasonic DMC-TZ3.I owned the previous model DMC-TZ1,I was very impressed with its performance. The specs are as follows:7.2 Mega pixels,10x optical zoom(40x with digital zoom),mega image stabilizer, intellegent iso control, and leica lens. The silver model is 283.88 at amazon.Original MSRP 349.99.

well after a trip to the store, im leaning towards the pentax k100d.
it seems like for the price its the way to go. got good reviews and isnt that much more than the canon a's i wanted to see the g7 in person but i didnt see it anywhere. i took a quick indoor pic of my kid in the poorly lit store and was happy with the flash and color, saturation was nice light was even. im gona try and get them to match butterfly photos $429 price. well see how that goes.
also, doesnt seem like th canon s5 is availible yet ad thatd be high on my list.

I just bought a Panasonic Lumix off amazon for a cool $126.88 (although probably not as high end as your looking for) but after doing the research I would not recommend a canon due to the E18 error, if you don't know what that is google for it. I am not sure if the E18 error is still present on canon cameras but it has been a HUGE problem in the past and has caused many canon brand camera's to go belly up.

I have the Canon Digital Elph SD800, 7.1 MP. It's beautiful. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=145&modelid=14220
I took a bunch of picture at Mt St Helens when I hiked it, and they turned out great. It's not anything professional. I got it for $250 on sale at Costco. You could probably get it for cheaper, seeing as I got it a year and a half ago. It really takes nice pictures. The entire Canon Elph line seems to perform well. There's the SD900 which has 10 MP (most megapixels I've seen until now, although I'm sure there are cameras with more) for $336. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-Titanium-Digital-Optical/dp/B000HAQ8EK/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-0655250-4777750?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1180583435&sr=8-1

Good luck, friend.

Edit: I'm going to assume that some people don't know what MP is. Stands for megapixel. It's basically the resolution of your camera. My 7.1 MP Elph takes photos of something like 3000 x 2200 (rough estimate) pixles. Basically the higher the better, although there may not be an urgent need for a high MP.

There was an excellent article a while back where they printed a bunch of digital pictures from something like an 8mp cam and a 5mp cam. Most people can't tell the difference on printed products.

The high end stuff is more for new media/photography professionals.

Yeap. I'd go with a 5-7 MP camera. Good quality for price. What I meant by there not being an urgent need is that you'd need a screen with uber-HD (3000p, right now they have 1080p) to actually view them in their full glory if you had 10 MP.

Sorry for double post, but....

QUICK QUICK QUICK! Digital camera for $99 at www.woot.com woot-off! Great deal :D 4.1 MP, ought to be enough. If you're online, take a look at it ;)

EDIT: To the post below me: correction, you did not state you don't want an Elph, you said that the flash on SD600 is killing you. I've had bad experiences with Pentax (somehow only half of the lens took a good picture; a large portion was terribly blurred or something), but I still believe that the SD800 is a nice deal. Less than $300, probably less than $200 if you tried looking.

Either way, I wish you luck with your Nikon/Pentax.

i appreciate the responses, though im not sure why i keep getting reccomendations for the elph's as i stated i have one and its not what im looking for.
im on the fence, literally i consider just going and buying one every hour. then my cheapness comes in and tells me to try harder to find a better deal.
i really want to do some comparison testing between a few cameras before buying them , but that seems to be impossible.
i saw the nikon d40 for $552 no tax at the exchange, which is tempting. the pentax is close too, well see. i figure i can always exchange it there without payign the restockign fee everyone else wants.
i might make a trip down there tonight as my new daughter finally came home today.

well it looks like the pentax k100d is $463 at circuitcity.
might just buy it there as they have the $40 off 200 coupon.
looks like ill be pm'ing that tonight. ill post my opinion on it.

edit - shit the coupon is good instore only and they dont carry that model in store.
neither does bb. that cc coupon and the gc's i got from forza and shadowrun wouldve made it an awesome deal. oh well.
im consdiering just buyign it from cc anyway. well see.
