Seems that there should be a cheapo re-release edition of this game.. Online Retailers aren't helping, anyone got any ideas?

Uhh I dont know if you are looking to play this or to have it for like collection purposes, but I'm pretty sure this game is "abandonware", meaning you can d/l it for free.

Good luck. There will never be a re-release of SS1 or SS2. EA owns the name and 2K owns Irrational aka 2K Boston/2K Austrailia. You need both for that to happen.

I do recall there being a smaller box budget re-release a few years back.. nobody seems to carry it anymore, though.

The abandonware thing is sketchy, and the underdogs isn't working.. i'll keep trying that route, though.

There was an EA Classics re-release, but they didn't really make too many of them. Your best bet is probably eBay, unfortunately.

Just because some people on the internet decide that a game is "abandonware" doesn't mean it is legal to download it.

Some people on TTLG tried tracking down who had various rights, but they didn't really get anywhere.

Well I wouldn't have posted it if I didn't think it was legal. Looking into it, the term abandonware doesn't have any legal meaning and I'm too lazy to look up the legality of System Shock 2. I d/led it years ago as abandonware and if you type it into google the game pops up for free d/l all over the place, so I just assumed it was legal.

It's not legal, since the copyright doesn't expire until 95 years after the release, IIRC. You can download it, but you'd be doing a disservice to Irrational Games. You can still purchase SS2 through online sites like Amazon and eBay. Sure, it might not be putting money into IG's pockets, but it least it's legal. The only time it is if it has been released as freeware or made open-source, much like Quake 1-3 has been. I'd expect a release of the IG library on Steam, though, since a lot of companies are going that route (look at id for example).

Coincidentally I opened the jewel case of SS2 the other day, and the damn CD was missing. Drove me nuts! I went through every single other PC game in case I had accidentally thrown it in with another game, but I still haven't found it.

Good luck finding this one at Retailers....

You might want to consult some people who might be trying to sell this online -- at like EBay or somewhere.

other then 90 bucks for the first one on amazon, the prices do not look that bad. Some are around 6 bucks to about 40. that was just from ebay and amazon.com

I fail to see how downloading it would be doing Irrational a disservice. :whistle2:s

In any case, everything I've heard indicates that there won't be a rerelease due to rights issues. Something tells me that 2K Games (owns Irrational, the developer) and EA (the publisher) won't be collaborating at any point in the near future, given how EA forced 2K out of the sports market.
