Gadgets Report: Wii Overtakes Xbox 360 in Worldwide Sales: Nintendo tops both handheld and home gaming market with DS, Wii

The Wii is officially more than just a gaming sensation. Nintendo’s latest console has captured the hearts, minds and dollars of not only gaming fans, but also the elderly, vacationers, the health-conscious and other casual markets.

Despite being released a year later than Microsoft’s current generation console offering, the Nintendo Wii has surpassed the Xbox 360 in total worldwide hardware sales, according to the latest data from VGchartz.com.

By the week ending August 23, VGchartz gathered that Nintendo had sold 10.57 million Wii consoles over lifetime, while Microsoft sold 10.51 million Xbox 360 consoles.] In order to eclipse the Xbox 360 in less than a year since release, the Wii had outsold Microsoft’s game system by a margin of 2.3-to-1 worldwide.

A key factor in Wii’s quick pace in catching the Xbox 360 the acceptance of Nintendo’s console in Japan. The Wii sold 3.46 million units in Japan, while the Xbox 360 sold only 0.43 million in the same region.

While typical sales numbers from the game companies relate to shipments to retailers rather than sold-to-consumers, VGchartz claims that it tracks its data based on actual consumer sell-through figures.

The popularity of the Wii, along with the DS handheld, have helped Nintendo rocket past its competitors. The Wii was outselling the PS3 by a margin of 6-to-1 in June, helping Nintendo overtake Sony in market value. In fact, Nintendo’s recent success has put it ahead of both NTT and Honda, making it the fifth largest company in Japan.

Was pretty much inevitable at the rate it was going, but I wasn't expecting it to happen until the holiday period.
Good, maybe now we can finally get some decent titles... I can only live on RE4 and Zelda for so long...
Metroid.
Doesn't mean its not good.
As the other said, that doesn't mean shit to someone that can't play it because FPS games make them sick.
Gaming sure had a good run.
LOL. That actually made me laugh.

MS is certainly picking up the slack if you ask me, and Sony's line-up for next year looks solid. I was never much a Nintendo-fan, only had a SNES (which might be my favorite console of all time besides the PS2) and never owned a N64 or a GC. I enjoyed the N64 a lot, but I thought GC was FTL.

Also, does anyone else think it's sad that 2 of the Wii's top titles are GC games? And don't try to argue Zelda isn't a GC game...it's a GC game with waggling.

Isn't the top-selling Wii title Wii Sports?
I love RE4, and Zelda wasn't too shabby either despite feeling like a OOC redux, but I think Wii Sports is really the reason why the Wii is selling so well.

Whatcha gonna do? the hardcore gamer population has been stablizing for years, and it's cut up into 3 pieces for MS, Sony, and Nintendo...

but Nintendo now has the phattest mistress on the side as well, they are literally MAKING the so-called "casual gamer" and that gaming demographic is just in its infancy.

Wii overtaking 360 is less than a year seems pretty logical.
I'd be more impressed if they had done it in 6 months.

They probably would have passed the 360 in six months if the system had been readily available. I'm kind of surprised there isn't a follow-up to WiiSports or a new Brain Age game ready for the holidays. Is Wii Fit coming out this year or in 2008?
I enjoyed the N64 a lot, but I thought GC was FTL.

Different strokes... I think the GC was a great system and if I had to pick one from last gen to keep (and get rid of the others) it would be the GC hands down, no contest. Yeah, I'd miss an RPG or two on the PS2, but I could live without it. (Saw no need to think of ever owning an original Xbox). I still have a huge backlog of GC games to play.

And Dr. Mario Kart was being sarcastic (can't tell from your response if you knew that ;)). He thinks this 360/PS3 HD business is unnecessary.

The Wii lineup this Fall is incredible and it's already here with the stellar Metroid Prime 3 (which puts most of my 360 library to shame). I've stopped playing it for a day or two because I was powering my way through and I don't want it to end so soon!

But, anyway, I'm glad I own both systems - the Wii for serious games and the 360 for casual pick up and play XBLA titles ;).

Is this a joke?
Is this a joke?
Nope, it's the honest truth for a lot of people, myself included. The 360 is great for a few things here and there, but the Wii is the primary console in my house.
Is this a joke?
It was somewhat tongue in cheek, but partially the truth, for me, anyway. Like Daroga, the Wii is my primary system. I played the 360 a lot this summer because I just got it in late April. But now that the big Wii games are starting to come out (Strikers followed by Metroid followed by BW II, Mario Galaxy, SSBB and some others) it will be more even. My time on the 360 is split between XBLA and "serious" games. I was surprised how fun some of the XBLA games are - and those are casual pick up and play games, no doubt about it. I think it is a great system for that. Plus I tend to rent the kids games on the 360 (if I have to sit through things like Shrek and Ratatoiulle, I might as well have the purtier versions of them). Yeah, that sounds all backwards, but it is how it has gone down.

Note that I don't play FPS's (Metroid being the exception) so that rules out 75% of the 360's "serious business" games for me ;). I also don't play many sports games and that's a big chunk of the rest of lineup (though I'll get NCAA '08 when I can get it for $10 or less). What does that leave, racing games? I like Burnout, but that's about it. My big Fall games on the 360 will be Blue Dragon and Katamari.

But mostly I was just tweaking the "Wii is for soccer moms and grandmas" crowd here on CAG ;).

Welcome to 2 weeks ago.

I think we already discussed this. Reminds me of two old cronies sitting around with their memory going, just arguing about the same old same old.

Doesn't it come with the system? How could it not be the top-selling title?
Doesn't it come with the system? How could it not be the top-selling title?
I don't think it is actually... I know some people find deals and pick up games but have yet to find the system on a shelf.

I am with Daroga and others as well. FPS are great and I cant wait to try Bioshock, Lost planet, Halo 3 etc. But beyond the highly acclaimed big titles on 360 its not going to be my primary system. I work way to much, and have to many other hobbies, as well as a house and a wife. I don't have time any longer to devote to rinse and repeat games. The FPS genre has been around for almost 20 years now and for the most part its been done to death. Burnout is a great fun game, I also really enjoyed Excite truck on the wii and feel it was seriously under appreciated.

Plus we have a bunch of couples at our house a lot and the wii gets some good use then... my 360 couldn't do that if I wanted it to.
Plus we have a bunch of couples at our house a lot and the wii gets some good use then... my 360 couldn't do that if I wanted it to.
The great irony? My 360 gets the most use when people come over (gaming friends at least). They all have Wiis, DSs, etc. But they don't have a 360, so Bomberman Live, and Pac-Man C.E. hotseat games are common when we get together. Thus, what io said is hitting the nail on the head, the 360 is principally a casual game machine for me.

People are buying those consoles for their mothers and fathers. That's why these things are selling so well.

i have a 360 and a wii, i generally drag out the wii when my friends are over since its a party animal, however if i'm going for single player i'd have to choose my 360, simply because i have more single player games for it anyways

Interesting POVs in here. My room mate has a Wii and I have a 360. When people come over, we always play wii sports (which is great while drinking beer, BTW). It seems like my 4 player XBLA titles never get any love. I own Bomberman, Worms, Small Arms and the Jackel-type game. They are all fairly quick and simple to pick up but it just seems like the Wii has so much steam behind it right now.

IMO, Wii has made gaming fun for those who aren't coordinated enough or don't have the time to play a game like say, Ghost Recon or ESIV: Oblivion. Those are just two kinda complex-long games right off the top of my head. But these are the games that I like. And it is kinda worrisome for me, the conventional gamer, that this system is selling so well. I hope Sony and MS remember who is there fanbase. Indeed, I think they will.

Leave it to mainstream consumers to come along and try to poop on a lifelong-conventional gamer's party.

So... are you at all interested in Mass Effect?

Lets just face it, you cannot beat a combination of owning BOTH, the Wii and the 360!!!

I have both systems and love them both. I want to be able to play the Nintendo exclusives (Metroid, Mario, Zelda, Smash, M.Kart...) but the 360 LOOKS so damn pretty. I think the 360 is better for more mature games(ers) e.g. Gears of War, T.Clancy games like GRAW and RB6vegas, I also prefer sports games on 360 because they look so good (and, concomitantly, so shitty on the Wii).

I got mad love for both systems (so long as my 360 keeps working) because I am not a "casual" gamer and love what both systems have to offer. They are so different and diverse in their approach to gaming that ya gotta have both FTW.

PS, Im not rich or anything but as a true CAGer knows, you dont have to be to own both systems!

Now comes the fun part - the waiting game. Microsoft will be waiting as long as possible to release their "Official" units shipped figures, because the moment they do (running under the assumption that the Wii has actually outsold the 360) the headlines will be all over the place. And it doesn't matter how many top quality titles the 360 has, a simple headline stating "Wii outsells 360 in less than 1/2 the time" is just more bad news for the 360. With it's RRoD and dangerous steering wheel issues, MS just doesn't need more bad headlines.

So, it'll be quite a while before we hear anything "official" about the Wii outselling the 360.

It would be a tough call for me. The BEST games on the GC were my favorite of last gen by far (i.e. they beat out the best games on the PS2 or X-box for me).

BUT, they were fairly few and far between for me, and as such I spent more time playing the PS2, and a decent amount on X-box, as there were so many GC droughts for me since I didn't care for games like Pikmin, Animal Crossing, Viewtiful Joe, Mario Party games, Mario Sports games etc. that probably kept others pretty busy.

It was really just games like Wind Waker, the Rogue Squadrons, Mario Sunshine, Eternal Darkness, RE4, RE1, Smash Bros, Mario Kart etc. for me. They were great, but relatively few over a 5 year span, especially the last couple of years since most of those came out earlier in the lifespan.

Agreed, Wii60 is the way to go. I only have the Wii thus both due to not really having time to play enough to justify owning both, as well as the 360 price and reliability issues making me want to hold off for the new chips and maybe another price drop.

But eventuallly I'll have both, and it is the way to go as you get the innovative controls and the great first party games on the Wii and kick ass HD graphics, online gaming and games in genres the Wii will be thin in on the 360.

Except if you like MGS. I don't think I'll be able to resist come March.

I think most people will be able to resist the entry cost required for ONE game. And an awful lot of them still figure MGS will go to 360 eventually anyhow.

I don't. And I'd be shocked if it didn't make it over to the 360 eventually.

It's entirely possible that the 360 could be back on top during the holidays if they're able to push more units than Nintendo can produce. But we'll know that once December hits.

As it is, Q3 results will include Halo, which should also keep things close.

Will be an interest race this fall with the 360 with Halo and the Wii with Mario and Smash Bros (and Wii Fit if that is coming this year--didn't follow it as it seemed lame to me but will probably do good business nonetheless).

It's true there aren't many good Wii games yet, but I don't think I'd find more to play on the 360 or PS3. I'm sure Gears of War is amazing, but it's not really my thing. I'm more excited about Mario Galaxy than Halo 3. If that means I'm not hardcore, so be it.

I think it's scheduled for Q1 in the US.

It doesn't come with the system in Japan. It sells extremely well in Japan, it seems like most people in Japan who buy a Wii also buy Wii Sports.
If I remember correctly last time I looked at the Japanese charts it was at 1.7 million copies sold or something like that. It may not be the best selling Wii game worldwide if you don't include the "sales" of the pack in copies in the US/Europe, but it's certainly right up their with Zelda.

Yeah, it all comes down to taste.

I could definitely find more to play on the 360 (mainly because it's been out longer) but I've just not been willing to bite the bullet at current prices/Red Ring of Death issues.
If the PS3 is a trojan horse for Blu-ray, then Wii Sports is a trojan horse for the Wii.
LMAO!!! That's a good point, because the Wii sports tennis is the game that makes me want to get a Wii.. too bad you can't rent systems at blockbuster anymore.

Yeah, I figured he was, judging from his posts in the "why this is your last gaming generation" thread or whatever. GC really? I guess it doesn't matter for me anymore since I do have a Wii. But I only own one GC game, and that's SSBM.

And blasphemy with MP3 putting your 360 library to shame! For me personally, the 360 is slowly creeping up on the PS2 and SNES to take top spot for favorite console of all-time. Yes, and I'm saying that only a year and a half into the console's life.

Yesterday I was actually thinking to myself why I even bought a Wii so early in the first place. Paper Mario was been there, done that, and MP3 didn't come out til last week. In fact, my Wii has been underneath my bed in a bag since school ended back in July. I played MP3 on my parent's Wii upstairs for like 30 minutes, then went back to Bioshock. I easily could've sold the damn thing for a profit, and gotten it at a later time. Oh well.

I've been about the same. Played Zelda, then nothing but a couple of VC games until I got around to Super Paper Mario in July/early Aug (and like you said, it was nothing special) and now Metroid is out and I'm loving it.

If I had it to do over again I may have not bought it at launch, and waited until this fall or next spring when I could have got one and had a lot to play (i.e. zelda, metroid, mario galaxy, smash bros etc.) rather than it just gathering dust for months at a time (an odd VC title here and there aside--only bought 5 and only liked 3 of those).

But then again, I paid for it entirely with trade ins/online game sales and I wouldn't have bought a 360 either due to the price, failure rate and not having enough games I wanted until this fall either, so really no skin off my nose.
