CAGiversary!
Alright, so after 10 months of looking, but not that hard, I got a Wii. Tiger Woods 08 seems to be the party game for me, so that is on the list. I had to had Zelda, so thats a done as well.

Im not too impressed with whats out there, but I see tremendous potential with it and understand the second and third year releases are going to be insane, like Mario Kart and Mario Galaxy. Never played a smash brothers, but that will change.

Im looking at picking up a few, and IGN reviews havent really been my bag lately, so Im looking for advice from you guys and gals. Everytime I get asked at EB/GS why I dont like Halo (its not for me, I like Gears and Bioshock) I feel a robot from the dork's bookbag will force me out of the store.

Im thinking of SSX Blur.

Let me know of any thoughts. I usually only play single player games, I would rather use a game to get away before bed than as a reason to hang out.

Thanks for the heads up. PM if you want to play some games on Live, I suck, so you can boost your stats.

For me, Zelda and Metroid Prime have been the two great games. I'd give both 9.5.

Only thing else I've played that was purchase worthy was Super Paper Mario, but I'd probaby give it a 7.5, so I reccomend it much less strongly.

I'd also recommend Resident Evil 4 if you've not played the GC or PS2 version.

As for SSX Blur. I hated it as I couldn't get into the controls. They seemed a bit loose overall compared to the standard controls on prior versions, and having to draw hearts and other random crap with the controller to pull off the uber tricks was incredibly lame. The motion controls only add to the game when you are doing somethign that mimics the on screen action IMO, not when you're doing random shit like that.

Aside from that, I'm just waiting for Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros: Brawl, doubt I'll buy any other 2007 Wii games.

I liked SSX Blur. The controls are tough and take a bit to get used to it is a fun game. I have a copy I'm looking to trade or sell. PM me if your interested.

Metroid Prime 3 (GET THIS), Super Paper Mario, Mario Strikers Charged, Trauma Center: Second Opinion, and Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition seem to be the games that most people would agree are worth getting. I would also personally recommend Elebits and Excite Truck. Also, I do like SSX Blur, but I would say get one of the other games I listed first.

Trauma Center. Very fun & addicting.

Super Paper Mario is a good time too.
Metroid Prime 3 is a must, and I don't even like FPS very much :)

There's one must have game for the Wii thus far and that's Zelda (I haven't played MP3 yet). I'd also get RE4 Wii since it's only $30 and the game plays 10x better with the Wiimote.

Super Paper Mario is fun but at times it's just borderline irritating but still good overall and worth buying if you can get a good price on it.

After those 3 games... I really didn't care for anything. WarioWare is ok but lasts for a whole 2 hours and the multiplayer isn't that good. Wii Play and Mario Party 8 are pretty fun with friends.

Other than those games, the Wii, thus far, is a system of tacked on ports and mediocrity.

I'll add on without repeating the obvious (Super Paper Mario, RE4) but I really enjoyed Godfather and its reasonably priced .. if you haven't played it on any other systems, its definitely a great buy.
Alright, here's how it goes...

Zelda and Metroid (my favourite Wii game, and the best Metroid I've ever played) are the two obvious ones. Same for Wii Play if you want another controller.

Super Paper Mario should be your next priority after those. Some people complain it's too cutesy. Some people complain there's too much reading. I complain some people are too god damn whiney. Just don't expect any difficulty out of this game.
Also, nobody with a sensitive stomach/under the age of 12 should see Mimi's transformation
.

Godfather, Scarface, and RE4 are all fantastic choices if you have not played them on other system. Hell, RE4 is a fantastic choice if you've played it a hundred times over. From what I've read, Scarface is generally considered better than Godfather, though the excessive fucks weaken it some.

For online play, Mario Strikers is your best bet a million times over. You even have the option of playing online splitscreen games. I've heard bad things about the online in NFL '08.

Speaking of NFL - they're actually not bad. '07 had bad kicking and a few problems with the defense, and I don't think '08 changed too much, but they still use motion controls damn well.

Then we get into the meat of Wii games: Good, but not great. Things like Sonic, Trauma Center, Elebits, WarioWare, Excite Truck, and Rayman. I know some people (Daroga!) will defend some of these to the death, but I'm still lumping them together. For various reasons - length, hit-or-miss experimentation, whatever - these are the types of games that you don't want to pay full price for, but you will probably want to keep an eye out for them when their prices drop or on peoples' tradelists.

Beware of: SSX (VERY hit-or-miss, as you saw above), non-Metroid FPS (Red Steel was rushed, and CoD has minimal replay value), Prince of Persia (unimproved "remake" of a game a couple years old - you could buy both it and its predecessor off of my TL for less), and Dragon Blade. Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with Dragon Blade - the reviews have just been painfully slow coming in.
Listen to this man. I'd recommend Resident Evil 4 (even if you've played it before) and Rayman (the "dreaded" mini-game comp) slightly more highly (they're must-haves at $30-ish), but that's about it.

Ill agree with trq and say what The Crotch said was a pretty good guide.

If you are planning on picking up a second (or third or fourth) controller, Wii Play is a nobrainer because it costs $50 and comes with a controller (normally $40). It's not a great game with much depth, but you're basically paying $10 for a few different mini games that are great to show off the capabilities of the Wiimote.

Zelda, Metroid Prime 3, and Super Paper Mario you will get a lot of people recommending (less so SPM, but it seems to be a consensus #3 game for the system so far).

Mario Strikers Charged is a real fun game. It's basically Mario Kart meets soccer. Even if you don't like soccer, you'll probably like this game. The single player isn't amazing, but it has the best online capabilities so far of any of the Wii games, so it expands the single player value a lot. Multiplayer is a blast. If you would pick up a game like Mario Kart 64 (not great single player, but awesome multiplayer), get this.

Mario Party 8 is a decent title. Again, only get it as a multiplayer title though. Playing a MP game as single player absolutely sucks. I love MP and I think I have only attempted it once and quit halfway through. If you don't have friends in the room, it's not worth it. Can be used as a good drinking game (whoever loses the minigame each turn drinks).

I will say that I enjoyed Trama Center a lot, but if you can't find it at a good price, you might want to wait as the sequel is coming out relatively soon. It's basically a medical puzzle game that you need to rely on speed and steady hands. Think a complex OPERATION game turned into a video game.

I only played a bit of Elebits, but it was pretty fun. One of the more original Wii games. Others could probably describe it better.

Rayman was pretty fun, but it got real repetitive really fast for me. As a minigame collection, it is better for single player than Mario Party 8, but there isn't really a good multiplayer mode at all. So for what you are asking, Rayman is probably a better choice than MP8, but personally for me I'd rather MP8 (seems like I do more gaming with friends)

THanks for the heads up everyone. RE4 I have for the cube, scary as crap, but awesome. Zelda is taking me some time, and i think ill do the week free rental with SSX at EB, then return if it sucks and lay it down on a pre order.

Elebits? Never looked into that.

Metriod in time, I still have to finish Prime, and then on to Echos.

Xbox Live? Hit me up, Forza and Madden 08 as well.

There is bound to be clearance and markdowns on anyhting from within the launch window soon, so hold off on anything that came out say before feb of this year.

I will second Excite Truck its always being overlooked and I played the living shit out of that game. its great. It works for get togethers as well. Get to some later stages and see who cane make it through the races... Once you learn how to keep yourself boosted almost all the time it can be insane to play and very fun to watch.

Seconded.

Also, I'm not sure how many of you have played Carnival Games, but I was very disappointed. I kept hearing how the reviews were wrong and the game was great, but frankly I find it terribly boring and clunky.

I've been trying to rent Carnival Games - yet both my local Blockbuster and Hollywood have deemed not to carry this. It is very strange as it seems like the perfect rental game. There's no way I'm buying it for more than $10 but I would think it would get rented constantly by all the families with Wiis around here. Dumbass rental chains...

Just to chime in on the must-haves, definitely Metroid Prime 3. Without a doubt... And of course Zelda. I would put Wii Play as a must-have since you probably need a second controller anyway and the game is well worth $10. I think the game is one of the most underrated in the entire Wii library. As others have said, SPM and Strikers are the next "tier".

I also enjoyed Elebits quite a bit, though I haven't played it in months. Interestingly enough, we just rented Dewy's Adventure and the level creator in that is making me want to play Elebits again. I dunno why, but Konami has this stuff nailed (level creation, sending them to friends, etc). I wouldn't recommend $50 on Dewy, though. It makes a good rental. The kids like it and are having fun making their own levels (they do that more than play the main game). I would pick Elebits over it though for purchase. I really have no idea what will happen with Elebits now - it seems like it is due for a price drop, but I'm also not seeing it in stores as much as before. I'm sure you'll be able to get it for less than $50 soon. I'm glad I held on to my copy though - IMO, it is the best 3rd party title for the Wii.

Rayman Raving Rabbids was great for a launch title but I'm glad I got rid of it for $38 or so with a GC trade-in promo a few months back. I do have the sequel preordered and will probably stick with that as it is supposed to improve on some of the minor problems of the first one.

I strongly agree with this. I usually don't go anywhere near soccer games, but I love Mario Strikers Charged. I think that if you don't want Metroid Prime 3 yet, then you should get this.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again.

Why do spend hundreds of dollars on a console, without knowing damn sure of a bunch of games you want to buy right at that moment?

need for speed carbon was surprisingly not bad. Picked it up for like 26bucks. kills a few hours. do not play splinter cell da. it sucks very much.

vanilla, i agree with you. my parents were raving about it, they had one since launch, yet i never actually played it. zelda is insane, i dig. i got wii play, and i must say , for the extra 10 bucks, you cant expct more, and damn, that cow race is fun. if thats any indicaiton on mario kart.

i actually went with ssx blur, it was 24 on clearance at target in whitemarsh. the controls are a bit fuzzy, but if you center your remotes after a jump, which i forget to do, it gets better and i think its a crap load of fun.

thanks for all ofyour help guys and gals. the wii seems to be taking some stress off of my xbox, been crushing that with some madden recently.
