PS3 Software Emulation of PS1/2 Titles

Identity Fraud

CAGiversary!
Does anyone know how well sony plans to keep improving this? I know if you look at some titles you'll see a few 'updates' such as this random example I found.

Final Fantasy Anthology Publisher: Square EA (Square Enix)Product No: SLUS-00879 Description: The following conditions have been confirmed on PS3 System Software Version 1.70: On the Final Fantasy V Disc (Disc 1), when the user’s character progresses to the first save point, and selects SAVE from the Game Menu, a black transition screen appears, and the title hangs. All conditions have been resolved on PS3 System Software Version 1.80.

You can see that some games haven't been forgotten. I assume that sony works on fixing "common" issues first that several games suffer from. For example, fixing something in the emulator winds up improving compatibility with several titles.

Will they ever start to see what makes some popular games have quirks? Like God of War I still has audio issues...

God of War

Publisher: Sony Computer EntertainmentProduct No: SCUS-97399
Description: During various FMV sequences throughout the title, the audio plays overlapped by static audio distortion.

and Devil May Cry I isn't even listed for the 80GB for some reason.

So yeah, just wondering if we'll just have to 'wait and see' what system update 2.0 fixes, I hope with a major update they've figured out how to improve the software BC.

Oh and before people go "Why didn't you just get the 60GB?"
1) Nagging issues I've read about people having controller issues, bluetooth dropping out due to interference. The 80GB has a different antenna part which has fixed this issue for people suffering from it. I didn't want to deal with any BS with controllers.

2) I got the Credit Card deal from this site, so I got an 80GB for $150, at the time of order the 60GB was out of stock with no backorder option.

If all else fails, I'll just wait till the PS2 gets very cheap if I every need to go old school for any classic games that don't get emulation support (but I hope sony has better software BC than the 360 has).

well since they are dropping BC in the 40gig. i bet they won't be spending much effort on BC.

I don't see the point of cutting BC. With the emotion chip discontinued, and all BC done via software emulation, it wouldn't cost them a cent to keep it.

No. There were other PS2 components that are apparently being removed for the 40GB version.

OP, since I don't believe there's been a significant firmware update since the 80GB's release, there's really no way to know until the next update.

It's not all software emulation. The 20GB and 60GB PS3 has both the Graphics Synthesizer and Emotion Engine. The 80GB PS3 (and European 20GB and 60GB PS3s) has just the Graphics Synthesizer. The 40GB PS3 has neither.

They should be able to emulate a fair number of games using just software emulation (like the 360 does with Xbox games) but they aren't.

What's the likelihood that they'll be able to add in BC completely via software later on? There is software that can emulate graphics cards and surely the PS3 is more than capable...

It's very likely (excluding Sony's tendency to ignore consumer wants). They'd simply need to emulate the graphics chip since the Emotion Engine has been emulated already via software. If they can do the graphics chip too, all they need to do is put a plugin for it in a future firmware update.

You grossly underestimate the complexity of the EE/GS chips. Just because MS can get a Celeron/GF3 emulated on their 360 system doesn't mean Sony can do the same. The architecture is vastly different and inherently quite a bit more complex. It may very well be impossible to ever get all of a PS2 emulated in software on the PS3 hardware.

Both the EE and GS are far less powerful than the Celeron and GF3 in the Xbox. They should take less power to emulate them, if they can't because they made it too complex then it's Sony's own damn fault.

Yeah, so I guess its just wait and see hmm. I'm almost tempted to just sell my friend the PS3 I have and get a 60GB, but the problem is I really like that the 80GB has the improved bluetooth (as I've read so many problems with it and I knew it'd drive me batshit crazy if I was effected by it).

I hope 2.0 has more updates.

Are there really still problems with the Bluetooth? I heard about those for a while after launch, but it seems like they've been rectified. Or have people just given up?

I've read problems on a bunch of places the only one I found that was 'fixed' was someone who had wireless speakers who had to turn them off while using his PS3. I haven't found anyone who posted a troubleshooting guide or anything that had a high rate of fixing the issue.

I know one single person isn't a big sample, but I was talking to someone on another board in PMs, he said he had a 60GB but would loose his controller connection a few times, he traded up to the 80GB and his problem was fixed.

People gave up. I'm shooting for 80GB for the same reason as IF.

Don't quote me on this, but it's really nothing to do with the power of the system, but more to do with bandwidth / memory and doing the emulation in realtime.

Yeah, who knows what caused it for some people, it could've been changing the channel on a wireless router, or moving a phone but if you live close to other people 2.4Ghz devices they have could still effect things in your house; which would suck since I doubt they'd do anything for you. The funny thing is that the 40GB has further improved bluetooth, so I hope I don't run into any problems with my 80GB "reverse F antenna" (which still almost sounds made up to me :p )

Its nice to save shelf space, but with the PS2 only getting dirt cheap (sony produced PSOnes well into the PS2 lifespan). If anything else, if I did sell my friend the 80GB for the price I got with the Sony Card deal I'd just use third party controller for the 60GB to avoid bluetooth alltogether. But odds are I'll just use PS2 for old games that aren't supported with emulation. It seems most of the games I would play seem to work fairly well, audio problems being the worst in FMVs (hiss and static) My TV upscales the PS2 through component just as good as the PS3 internal hardware does.
