My PS3 looks great on my Panasonic HDTV (TH-42PX60U 42") but it does have the following issue: I am running the PS3 through the "HDMI 2" input on the TV (straight from the PS3 to the TV, not through an amp). When I turn on the PS3, and each time I load a game (from a game disc or a PSN game from the hard drive), DVD or Blu-Ray movie, the screen will flicker and "HDMI 2" will appear on the screen.

This does not happen when I run my DVD player through the HDMI 1 input. I assume that the PS3 is sending some kind of signal that makes the TV "reset" the input (it's not changing to a new input, since it stays on HDMI 2, but it's behaving as if it is repeatedly being instructed by the PS3 to change to the HDMI 2 input).

I've got the latest PS3 firmware. This has been an issue through several firmware upgrades (got the PS3 in July). I am running my PS3 straight to my TV, not through amp or anything like that.

Has anyone else had this or a similar problem, and has anyone figured out how to fix it?

Do you happen to know if this can be fixed by either swapping the HDMI cable or updating the HDTV firmware? I'm a bit leary of doing the later as I don't want to mess with my TV unless necessary since it's otherwise working without a hitch.
It's related to HDMI handshaking, I believe. It's a common nuisance.
I think it is due to switching resolution. I think the XMB is in 1080p, while most of the games you are playing are likely in 720p. Much like changing the resolution on your computer monitor will cause it to go blank (try it), the same is true with your PS3. As soon as your TV detects no signal (during the temporary blank) it displays the 'HDMI' message, which is likely the same message it displays when you have nothing plugged into that port. It seems the PS3 initiates a res even if it doesn't need too. i.e., my SD CRT flashes blank when I go in and out of games too, and on a SD tv, XMB, and gamesa are at 480. You might be better off just trying to get your TV, not to show that message, on signal loss, and just stay blank, then it won't be so noticeable.

btw-this is an educated guess, not fact.

Hmm. Interesting. Since it's a 42" plasma maybe I'll just try setting the PS3 to 720p output (since the display can't do better than that anyway) and see if that corrects the issue. I'll report back ...

It's a quirk of the PS3 switching resolution modes. It's very annoying and (currently) there is no work-around.

XMB is 1080p and when going to watch a Blu-ray movie (also 1080p) the screen will still flicker a few times.

I'm guessing that the flicker in that case is the HDCP handshaking...

Gotta love DRM. ;) It's annoying, to be sure.

Yeah it does the same thing on my Westinghouse LCD when using the HDMI. It bothered me at first but now I know it's going to happen and it only take 1 - 2 seconds so I can deal with it.

It's not like it destroys the experience or anything -- it's just annoying and lame that Sony and/or Panasonic can't/won't fix the problem. It just doesn't feel quite as "HiDef" when I fire up a Blu-Ray and get 2-3 seconds of screen flicker first.

yep, mine does this on my olevia and my bravia....my screen on my bravia flickers while the olevia goes staticky a few times...hate that static noise though

If it is DRM related, then it's a quirk with how Sony encodes the DRM. My HD DVD player, Xbox 360, and Comcast box don't ever do this.

Have you done the HDMI setup "trick"?
Turn on your PS3, but keep holding down the power button for about 5 seconds (you will here some beeps). This will activate some kind of HDMI setup...

I have a Panny Plasma and it fixed my problem.

Yeah I've done that. I actually have two Panny plasma's. I have a 42PX50U in the bedroom (was my main TV last year when the PS3 launched) and I have a 50PX600U in the family room.

I get the same issue on either TV. It's not a big deal, just kind of lame. It's probably because the games are running at different resolutions than Blu-ray movies and the XMB if you have your PS3 set to anything other than 720p.

When I use the "trick" on the 42PX60U, 1080i is the default. On the 50PX600U, 1080p is the default.

I think your Panny is a bit older and might scale everything from 720p, whereas (according to the old fogies on AVS) the newer Panny's scale everything from 1080i and 1080p, respectively, since 2005.

I've never heard of this "trick". I have everything set to 720p as the default, I wonder if this would fix the problem fuzz/flashing on either of my LCD TVs.

Thanks

My 360 HD DVD does sometimes... go figure. Of course on both my PS3 and 360, it appears to be only some media/movies that do it... some do not. For instance, the Blu Ray of "The Replacement Killers" does flicker when starting up for a brief moment, but Bullitt doesn't. On my HD DVD, the only one I've had it done on so far (I've not that many of either format movies, until I get my Blade Runner) has been TMNT, iirc.

I don't have a comcast box, so I can't say in that regard. Hell, my upscaling DVD player has the handshake issue without the flicker.. it just turns green for a split second if I don't turn on the TV first. I'm sure that's just an HDMI thing, rather than DRM.

I have the 42px500u and my ps3 does the same thing. The resolution swapping is annoying, when i was playing god of war 2 i would miss the first few seconds of audio on the cut scenes because of this. I hope future firmware updates can address it.

I gave this a shot with my TH-423PX60U and it did not fix the problem (the suggested HDMI setting was 1080p, by the way). Thanks for the suggestion though!
