Firmware Updates - Are they necessary?

Only to play new UMDs (which are usually 1 or 2 firmwares back) or if you want a new feature. So, other than that, no.

You know you can d/l updates from the PS site and transfer via USB, right?

Most UMDs that require newer or firmware updates will have firmware updating software on the UMD itself. So don't worry about it until you need it..or would like to upgrade for functions.

There's a pretty big gap between game releases where a firmware update is required. Most games seem to select the firmware they are going to run on first, then go into development for 6-18 months, which is about the window when you can expect to need a new firmware flash.

also, games that require a higher firmware, come with a firmware updater you can run off the umd
there are certain updates that have been useful (backgrounds, ps1 support, 333mhz unlock, etc), though I am not very familiar on the featureset since I run a custom firmware.
You can also download a firmware from online, put it on your memory stick via usb and update that way.
I have Verizon FiOS and can't connect my PSP slim to the WLAN.

Are firmware updates really necessary?
I have FIOS and haven't had a problem at all. And that goes for all my wireless; 360, PS3, pc's, and now my psp. They all work like a champ. I highly recomend FIOS to anyone who can get it in their area.

Anyway, I think they are. I update my Official Firmware as soon as it comes out. I really like being up to date.

My FiOS seems to have problems with XBL though, but that's another story.

The verizion fios actiontec router is confirmed to NOT work wirelessly with xbox live. It's total fucking shit, I can't stand it. Actiontec claims to be working on a firmware upgrade. Search google - there are tons of threads on this. Also, my DS lite refuses to connect to it, but the psp can without issue, oddly.

I have the Actiontec MI424WR wireless router that Verizon gave me and I'm on XBL all the time. I sometimes have connection problems, but I have them less than when I had Comcast broadband as my ISP. And the Actintec router is in my basement, and my 360 is in my bedroom two floors up. The only problem I have with the Actiontec router is that I am unable to stream video from a media center laptop to my 360. But I'm having Verizon move my install point from the basement to the first floor and hopefully my network signal strength will improve.

Sorry to hear about all the problems other FIOS subscribers are having; I guess I'm the lucky one for a change.

I can't connect the PSP with my DI-624 router.

I set up the connection using automatic and manual with all configurations. WEP info, PPPoE set.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Error message keeps saying check network security settings.

Is your wireless network an infrastructure network or an ad-hoc network?

Check the router SSID to make sure it is enabled. Check that the router is configured to assign IP addresses to network devices, DHCP-enabled.

And call support, Sony and Verizon.

I could never get my PSP to connect when I had a WEP key. It would always tell me the key was wrong, and I found some forums that claimed I had to translate the key into hexadecimal or something like that, and that didn't work either. I assumed that WEP just didn't work with the PSP but no one wanted to complain about it.

When I have network setting scan for wireless, my router is listed.

I have tried several difference ways and no luck. Added MAC address, changing everything possible and still doesn't work.

I doubt calling Sony will do anything and Verizon won't help much either.

I do know the Dlink router is set to PPPoE.

My DS works fine with it.

I have a DI-614+ router, and it took me about 30 minutes of not being able to connect before I finally just rebooted the router and it connected right away after that. I'm using a WEP key also, 128-bit I think. I thought I read on Sony's troubleshooting forum or somewhere else to try 64-bit encryption if you are having problems with 128-bit or higher.

I called Sony...

On the website I noticed my router firmware is older than their recommended. I will try to reboot the router first and try updating the firmware.

The rep recommend setting ports to:

TCP 80 443 5223 10070-10080
UDP 3478 3479 3658 10070

Finally got off the phone with D-link.

Had to do a total reset of the router and then upgrade the firmware to get it working.

Verizon Fios online upgrading firmware did not work.
