I know there are stand-alone systems that copy in real time, a VHS to a DVD. Is this probably the easiest way to transfer a whole lot of 2 hour VHS tapes to DVD?

Anyone have a reccomendation on a brand or actual product that is fairly cheap?

The cheapest and best way is to get a tv tuner for your computer and hook it up to the vcr. Than convert it to dvd (mpeg 2 I think) This allows the flexibility of editing what you want and dont want on every disk, and a tv tuner can be as cheap as like $50. This way does take more time however
Unless these are home videos or something I wouldn't even bother. VHS quality isn't exactly fantastic.
im guessing he doesnt want to transfer for dvd quality as much as he wants the ease of having the vids on dvd as oppossed to bulky/old/shitty vhs
Out of curiousity, will it always take at least as long as the tape is (2 hours or so) to get it on to a computer dvd? In other words is there a faster way?
Nope. I've been transferring my huge tape library (not exactly stuff you can buy on DVD + my home movies) for around 5 years now. (ouch)

Then again, it's not all I do, plus I'm OCD with menus/editing, etc.

I do the same stuff as the other CAG, just don't have a site. ;-)

best quality/stability without any hickups get the samsung from the top of the page i have one and it works better than your pc prolly will no matter how fast it is...and nobody say its because of my computer lol i can burn two dvd's at the same time and still use my computer without any errors...or run torrent burn a dvd and play a game without any issues so thats deffinately enough power to convert a crap vhs in to dvd
it is a little more expenseive but its a very solid choice(the samsung standalone combo) my father uses it all the time for his old crap and it works well
good luck on your search

Thanks for the responses everyone. I really just needed super easy since I'm getting paid to convert somewhere around 150 VHS to DVD. I ended up getting a combo Sony VHS/DVD recorder for around $250 with one touch recording.

My father in-law wants to do the same thing...is there a cheaper solution then $250?

The standard price seems to be around $200. I really didn't see anything less than $170 for a no-name brand.

If you only have one or two tapes you need to convert, Wolf camera does it. I got two dvds for $15 (after some coupon I had).
