Ok, I know I am probably not the only one with this question, but I couldn't really find an answer, so why are Criterion Collections so coveted and whats the difference?

The Criterion Collection, a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films on DVD.

Under license from the copyright holders, Criterion has released definitive, and in some cases unique, video editions of such films as Citizen Kane, A Hard Day's Night, It's a Wonderful Life, Robinson Crusoe on Mars, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Jason and the Argonauts, as well as those noted below. Many of these editions are now out of print, usually where the film's copyrights have changed hands or where the copyright holders have decided to release their own version. As a result, many Criterion titles are now collectors' items.

because they aren't the piece of shit films you find everyday at your local shit theater(major theater). they spend the extra to get the prints of movies that truly are worth of art, (except a few exceptions: Armageddon, Chasing Amy, Etc). So don't fucking complain, and buy them.

Except that Chasing Amy is a fantastic film, and easily Kevin Smith's best.

They're basically films that you watch in film school because you can't dish out the $800.00 or more for the massive collection. They're always packed with extra crap too.

QFT. Chasing Amy is fantastic.

They're a small DVD production house that focuses on making very high quality DVDs of classics, foreign, and often obscure films. This eye for detail extends from the restoration and transfer of the film itself, to the extras, to the essay by a film scholar that is usually included with every title to the aesthetics of the package design.

Some people try to collect them all (which is very difficult and VERY cost prohibitive), while others just collect what they like. Often, I'll buy a film I've never seen before simply because it's a Criterion title and I trust their judgment and know that, if nothing else, the film will challenge me.

BTW, the cheapest place to get them is generally www.dvdplanet.com (or www.deepdiscountdvd.com when they have their sales).

I dunno, I consider the first Clerks his best, Chasing Amy is tied for second.

I have a few Criteron films. I think they are overpriced but they do work on classic film restoration which I think is worthy of consideration.

Not all the Criteron films have extras though. Generally speaking, the films are better quality and more artsy than the usual crap you see on cable tv.
Chasing Amy was easily one of Smith's most boring film. Only jersey Girl is worse.
I actually liked Jersey Girl. Most people just write it off because they have heard so much bad stuff about it, but I was very surprised by it. Very underrated movie if you ask me.

I have to agree i haven't seen chasing amy in years but I remember not liking it but i really enjoy jersey girl. I think clerks is definitely his best though.

Chasing Amy is slow, but it's not boring. It's more emotional than any of Kevin Smith's other films, and while it's not his most hilarious film, it's his most personal-feeling and true to life (not that everyone falls in love with a lesbian, who in turn becomes straight). Chasing Amy hit me really hard, and I was pretty amazed at it.

I haven't seen Jersey Girl, so I can't comment on that.

I just don't like it when people who make cheap laugh type movies try to do something serious and thought provoking. It feels like they're trying to prove they can do serious films. Jersey Girl felt like Smith sold out to me.

i got a new copy of life aquatic with steve zissou criterion collection for $5 at hastings.

i didnt find anything different compared to "regular" dvd's except for the massive amounts of extra features that were included.

meh, Chasing Amy i used to think was a great movie, until i saw it again lately...and yea...not worthy of Criterion Collection. Not a bad movie..but um...pretty cheesy.

Most Criterion edition discs are great quality but some, especially the early dvd releases, use real shitty prints for the transfers and look horrible. Like the Salo disc for instance. The entire film has a yellowish tint to it and looks real dull. The R2 version blows the Criterion edition away, in quality and in extra features.

Wages Of Fear and Great Expectations are equally bad but I think Criterion re-released them with better transfers.

Hold on to that thought while I run to my child's performance play in a hacky cliche manner.

Don't forget George Carlin's dryest performance yet

I just watched it again recently, after not seeing it for a few years, and while I wasn't as blown away as I was the first time, my opinion did not change. For me, it signifies what a romantic comedy should be.
