This thread is partially to brag, and partially to ask. Best Buy had a G71GX Asus "Republic of Gamers" Laptop on clearance the other day, and I've tenatively snapped it up.
2.53 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
6 GB RAM
500 GB HDD
1 GB Nvidia Gefoorce 260m
17" widescreen 1440 x 900
It was $650, down from $1,300

Shouuld I stick with it? How long will a laptop with specs like that last? The last PC game I played was Starcraft, so I'm sort of out of the loop.

On a perhaps more helpful note, my Best Buy is really trying to push out any Vista-based laptop over the holidays, so keep your eyes peeled for deals.

That is a very good price for that laptop! I think gaming wise you'd be fine for some years. I own it's little brother the G51VX-RX05 which I bought at Best Buy for $999.99. The only difference is I have a weaker processor (2.0GHz), 4GB RAM, 320gig HD, and smaller screen and resolution. I recommend keeping it.

Wow, I think that's an absolute steal for that price. It should last you a little while, which translates to 6 months in the pc world.:)

As much as I think "gaming" laptops are overpriced, especially for the specs most have, you got a really good deal man. The mobile version of the GTX260 should be able to handle any game out there today with relatively nice specs, although for newer stuff like MW2, Dirt 2, etc..., you'll probably have to take a slight hit in the eye candy, although it'll still look great.

Awesome score man.

Thanks for the input, folks. After seeing the reaction here I'm already on it, and it is such a huge improvement over my (5 year) old one.
My first widescreen, too!
I think you did fine OP; if I had the dough I'd get one myself, but I'm guessing it's a YMMV deal.
At Best Buy clearances are on a store-by-store basis. Chances are, though, that every BB would be trying to get rid of Vista-based laptops. My store only had one of these left, but if you have a BB near you I don't think it'd be dumb to swing by and see what they've got for Vista computers.

$650!? I just bought the ASUS Republic of Gamers computer that is a step down from that (G60VX) for $999.99.

You got a steal!

nice find op, I got the G50VT-X5 (with its horrendous lid artwork design) awhile ago and thought I got a somewhat good deal out of it ($900).
