Hey guys, it looks like my DVD drive in my 3rd (2 RRODs) XBox is starting to go out. Last night I put in a game and after about 4 times of ejecting / rebooting the drive finally spun up and read the disk.

Any suggestions on what I might do to give more life to my existing drive or am I pretty much screwed? It also looks like it isn't something as simple as just replacing the drive, I actually need to backup the encryption key as well, correct? Any suggestions on which drives are better or should I just look for one similar to what I currently have?

Thanks in advance ...

I don't have any advice for you specifically but I did a quick Google search and there appear to be a ton of pages and even YouTube video guides on how to replace a 360 DVD drive. If you haven't already, you should do a search and see if any of those are able to specify exactly the process that would be needed to install a new drive on your 360.

Good luck.

I remember replacing the DVD drive on my original Xbox. It's not that hard if you've ever built or replaced components in a computer. Good luck!

I think drives go for about $50. Some drives need a modchip installed to copy the drive key, so it depends on what version drive you have. You should just report it as RROD'd and wait for the replacement. If it still doesn't work, they add in a free 3 month warranty , so you could use that to report the drive as broken and get it replaced for free.

This is not a bad idea actually, I'll see if I can "entice" it to RROD like my last two did. Sounds easier than trying to replace the dvd drive.

I just got done replacing a bad drive I had basically it wouldnt eject but it sounded like it really wanted to :)

There is 2 things you can do

1. adjust the laser on the drive (make sure you have a multimeter ready you will need it)

2. buy a replacement drive, now depending on what type of drive you have now it maybe possible to dump the encryption key and flash it to a new drive.

Google jungleflasher, theres pdf documentation and a tool/program that they have created.

Here is a link for a good replacement drive I just bought one off of them...

Just look at it funny for a minute, and I'm sure that thing will light up like a Christmas tree.
