I still have an old analog TV but it is on it's last legs and i plan to get an HDTV soon.
What is the difference between using the standard Red/White/Yellow cables and the HDMI cables as far as hooking up my 360 and cable box? Is there a noticable difference in quality?

Danke!

without question. HDMI houses both video and audio in one cable and lets you watch/play things in HD.. red/white/yellow is almost like a form of torture to me now.

If you buy an HDTV and use the old school cables, it's like paying for a high end prostitute and having Don Rickles show up at your door. HDMI cables are cheap online. Buy some. Get your HDTV money's worth.

Yeah, you MUST use either HDMI or component cables (the ones that have 3 cables just for the video) to get HD on an HDTV. You can't get HDTV over the RCA cables (yellow, red, white) or S-video cables.

Essentially, playing games will be a huge difference. Imagine the upgrade from you playing flash games on Newgrounds, to you playing MW2 on your gaming PC. Same upgrade. Well worth it.

For video games, the picture will be much, much clearer. Much bigger leap than going from Composite (Red/White/Yellow) to Component (Red/Blue/Green/White/Yellow). Well worth the upgrade especially since you can get HDMI cables for about $3 each (monoprice, Amazon)

For Cable, it mostly depends on your service (360/PS3 offers high-def out of the box), but again, HDMI cables are really cheap, so might as well. If your cable service doesn't offer HDMI hookup, go for Component.

How old is your X-Box? When I got my first HDTV, I had one of the early models that didn't have the hdmi port. So instead of getting the expensive 360 hdmi cable, I just traded it in for a new one. Looked much better, though if I had waited a few months I could have gotten the slim 360 instead...

I just picked up the new Reach Console which has the HDMI hookup. Awesome! and thanx for the Info everyone!!

red/white/yellow (composite) = 480i which is 480 lines of resolution and the picture is filled in an interlaced format. It is an analog signal.

HDMI = various resolutions supported including 720P & 1080P. It can do interlaced and progressive, you will want either 720P or 1080P depending on what your tv can do. It is a digital signal. Look for the newer version, HDMI 1.4
