Playstation RPG Hunt

CAGiversary!
I am trying to find a specific game my cousin had 10+ years ago.

It was definitely playstation.

It was before 2001.

I only got to play maybe 30 minutes of it and the thing I remember is you are escaping from somewhere(like a castle) and you come out from like a church maybe?

I know its a long shot so if this isn't nearly enough information I apologize.

Nope, it's not any final fantasy game, suikoden, or grandia for starters. I don't think it's a breath of fire game either. Thanks for your help.

I owned a copy at one point so I didn't think so. I verified on youtube by watching someone play the first 20 minutes or so that it's not the one. Have been finding lists of rpgs and trying to cross them out.

Another note, you are with a few other people so it's not like you escape by yourself. I doubt this helps but maybe as some games start you off more by yourself.

I don't believe so. I have watch some videos and done some reading and it doesn't seem like it. It would be a game that did a more super nintendo type look rather than adoptiong the blocky polygon look to their characters(ala take advantage of the new 3D possibilities the playstation offered).

if I had to choose I would say turn based. I hadn't played too many tactical rpgs so that would have stood out and there was definitely a party.

Was it a sprite based game? I think what you're describing sounds like Wild Arms...

Near the beginning, you play one of the three character's intro levels. There was a treasure hunter who had to escape a dungeon and there was a girl who's story took place in a religious school or something. Could be that you finished the treasure hunter's level and then chose to play the girl's story.

Yes, I believe it was sprite based. I actually have a copy of Wild Arms my brother gave me so I will play through and see if this is it when I have a little time.

I want to say it's early on. The things I know for sure is that I doubt I would have picked one of his saves and started playing. I didn't get to play it long at all.

Thinking carefully about it logically, it is odd to me that there was multiple people escaping at the beginning of a game as normally you might have one or two characters. The detail about them escaping comes from remembering them emerging from a church or some such structure separate from a normal entrance to whereever it was they were.

It's strange... I played a ton of PS1 RPGs but this doesn't sound like any of them. At least, not one of the popular ones. It does sound like some game I started up to make sure the disc was working (as I do with all of my games) but that was a PS2 game... can't think of the name, either.

The only spirte based PS1 RPGs I can think of off the top of my head are the Breath of Fires, Wild Arms, Tales of Destiny I & II, and Suikoden I & II.

I really don't have any clue, but aside from Final Fantasy Tactics, the only other sprite-based, turn-based RPG I can think of that begins in or near a church is Kartia:

It's a pretty good game. There's a copy up for sale right now in this lowball.

Well...I should say it's the only other one I've played. Other PSX RPGs that I'm not sure about are Arc the Lad Collection (a compilation of three games, I think) and Star Ocean: The Second Story.

Yes, I've played tactics and it's not that. I love that game though. I am going to be playing a bunch of PSX RPGs come graduation so maybe I will find it then. My brother had no clue what I was talking about when I called him today and this is the type of random stuff to remember that is right up his alley. The only other option was that it was SNES but to be honest I have played like every rpg from that error and I don't recall it being one of those.

The first thing I thought of when I read the description was The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past. Within the first 30 minutes, you escape from a castle by going through an underground passage that leads to a church.
I'd guess at Wild Arms, you start with 3 separate characters, one escaping a dungeon and one in a church.
This one seems to have potential to be what he is looking for, but he does mention the characters are together, and Cecillia's solo-intro seems to match his description best so that discounts this game. Unless what he remembers was a couple hours into the game during Adlhyde, but I don't think even those events would match what he is looking for.

As of right now, I am not sure what he is looking for.

Once I have real life in check, or about June, I can begin my marathoning of a bunch of games to see if I can find it. I'll keep the thread updated then unless someone stumbles upon the answer.
