Heroes of Newerth (HoN) is on sale for $10 (normally $30). This is a Dota Clone, very similar to League of Legends.

Credit to 'delirium' on NeoGAF because I am shamelessly copying his post below -

Heroes of Newerth (HoN) is a Dota/MOBA game. If you ever played Dota or League of Legends, the game is in the same genre. The game is great and with the new shop/guide system, its easier to get into more than ever.

Now, I'm sure everyone has heard about how bad the community who plays this game is. I'm not going to sugar coat it and say we have the friendliest people, but with any competitive multiplayer game in which teamwork is completely necessary to win; there will be ragers.

If there are active HoN members who want to change this OP, please have a Mod put you in charge of it. I am just a LoL player interested in HoN.

Been looking forward to this sale, I've got a friend who plays LoL and I'm trying to get him playing HoN. It's not that I think one is better or worse than the other, it's that there'll be a much bigger learning curve when DotA 2 comes out if he switches from LoL to DotA, as opposed to HoN to DotA.

And if anyone's curious, the game is absolutely worth it. It plays just like DotA with some better hotkeys and different balance/heroes. The devs may not always get it right the first time, but they're very active in the community, have been pushing out new heroes every 2-4 weeks, holding community events and tournaments, and are very fair about the non-gameplay effecting microtransaction store.

It's a damn good price for this game. My problem is it's not just HoN, LoL has just as bad as a community when it comes to these types of games, and DOTA 2 will as well, so just a warning.

I would like to buy this, but I have no friends who would play it and the community will be as bad as LoL's.

Eh, I liked HoN's beta, but I didn't think the game was all that great.

You better have a lot of time if you want to play because usually the shortest games last around 30 minutes.

Hmm, was thinking of picking this up the next time it was $10. I play LoL (semi-casually). Heard the HoN community was crap though, even when compared to LoL. I guess I don't actually have proof though.

The biggest thing for me, in the end, is that LoL is more fun than DOTA ever was (to me) because I like it's more, hmm, world of warcraft (read: cartoony) artstyle. Or to put it another way, I like playing with cute looking pixelated girls instead of ugly-vamp-dragon-zombie-bone-monster-queen-with-boobs. Yuck.

And, personally, I'm not worried about DoTA2. That will be it's own game in it's own time, and frankly it may not even appeal to me then. All that said, $10 is a good price especially since you then own everything (curse you, microtransaction-LoL). But then again, isn't HoN microtransaction based as well (alt costumes, etc)?

Hmm. Just don't know.

HoN is a great game. If you liked DoTA, this offers much more convinient features as well as frequent weekly updates.
New heroes, each distinct from each other, get added every one to two weeks. The developer cares a lot about this game and all updates are always free.

If you are willing to get one, kindly use my referral: http://heroesofnewerth.com/ref.php?r=X9GXLDC3
It does not cost or hurt anyone using this link.

I get coins, in-game currency in this game, per each referral and it would be nice to see CAG's helping each other. :)

You can purchase everything with the silver coins you get by simply playing, but some of the prices are jacked up for 5-6 items they have that're marked as gold items. Sometimes they have a reason for being marked up, like the Badass announcer because they had to hire John St. John, who I'm sure is pretty expensive. Other times though, they're just normal skins. No idea why they're marked as such. Regardless, it can all potentially be unlocked through simply playing.

Got it, removed mine.

The pub community is horrible, period. Same crowd that would play LoL or DoTA, so go figure.

That being said the actual game is FANTASTIC. Systems in place for VOIP, game disconnect/reconnects and penalties. You can absolutely play every char and feature without spending an extra dime and HUGE selection of characters.

A steal for 10 bones.

[quote name='chickenbutt']Apparently there's a trial. Good for those who want to try it out first :D

One warning for the trial* They are stat-free games, so people leaving early or playing not-so-well will be considerably more common than in standard games.

Its a good way to judge the heroes and general gameplay though.

HoN is a lot less forgiving than LoL, in terms of both gameplay and the community. I've also felt that the skill ceiling is much higher in HoN, and that the people that play LoL are generally worse. Definitely worth $10 as I feel the devs care alot about the game and feel like its more balanced than LoL.

Heres a little HoN entertainment, and an example of how high the skill ceiling can get. (The guy screams really loud and curses but hes really, really good)

great deal, but the HoN community is equivalent to Mos Eisley spaceport. A "wretched hive of scum and villainy."

You don't want to be there...

The best thing about these being PC games is you get to hear others be told along with hearing yourself "Please Uninstall"
